FINAL FANTASY XV - Niflheim Base Battle Footage

At least with FF8, you had other ways to obtain magic, like refining from items, etc. So, I feel XV should also have other ways to provide magic to the player. Make it easier, and the player is more likely to use the system more often.

I think the idea is that magic is supposed to be this rare option for use sparingly as it already is extremely powerful and overuse of it would make combat far too easy.

When would it grey out, after a single use, two, ten? It would be really unintuitiv in an action-based game if you couldn't see quickly what you can still use or not and how many times still. And you mean a "cool-down period" after it greys out or "empty" meaning you have to refill it at some magic source spot or camp or whatever later?

I doubt they'd limit the magic system that much, discouraging players to use it.

I meant greyed out once all of the magic items are empty. So, if you have 10 Fires, then it would get greyed out after using Fire 10 times. Or the icon might just disappear completely. There are lots of ways to do it.

The system will be limiting, and their reason might be that it is too powerful or whatever. Personally, I'd much rather take weaker magic but be able to use it freely and more often.

Anyway. We'll see how it plays out.

Ultima better be in. You can't have FF without Ultima...
Except 1,3,5,11,and 12 apparently...

That would be some cool ring magic, and can you imagine how amazing it would look considering even the most pedestrian magic looks insane.

Luna was holding a ring for Noctis, wasn't she? Maybe Noct can control Leviathan water jets or something with it. That'd be cool.

If that's the case, then they're probably thinking to use Magic as a last resort. I don't think the game will be nearly that difficult, though.

Not really last resort. More like using it at opportune moments when they arise rather than spamming them all the time or having to hoard them like precious diamonds.

Yeah, hold button nonsense is crap. They have said that they have two battle modes, so maybe one of them will get rid of it. I don't think the animations will change between modes, but if one button press equates to one sword slash, then it will FEEL much better.

Like you said, we'll have to try it out. Hopefully the upcoming demo includes these two battle modes.

I'm a little worried that the one we see in this footage is the faster one, while the slower one is basically just Episode Duscae. That would really suck. As you said, I would be really happy if it's this and another mode which gets rid of button holding.

If this was the faster mode, then I wonder what they'll do with a slower mode?

We should really wait for more details next month. If magic items would be limited, there should have been a number below the icon showing "how much" is left, shouldn't it? Btw, I just checked and Noctis didn't lose MP after using Fire.

That was actually my exact thought, Koozek. He describes the magic system as though you extract elements and then use them to craft spells. Though there isn't a system to level up magic, some spells will simply be more powerful. It sounds to me like it's POSSIBLE (if not necessarily likely) that you craft a spell like a weapon and use it until you find yourself able to find/craft a more powerful version of that weapon. The absence of an indicator for "ammo" was pretty conspicuous to me.

Have they said anything about the game's resolution? Will they be able to eventually output 1080p 30 fps with these visuals? I remember them saying they are targeting, and was wondering if there is something more concrete after all this time.

Nothing since Tabata said they'd prioritize 30fps over IQ, i think. Although usually its the other way round so I'm probably wrong. There's no reason they can't do 1080p/30fps though with optimization and the like, but I'd take a slight hit for shadows on grass. Which is a worthy pet peeve of mine :p

That said I've just seen the gamersyde version of the video..I know some of the base enemies are level 6/7 or so but they seem in general less tanky compared to Duscae enemies. Seems good.

The TGS trailer just says "She's got something for me", not a ring. Or did Tabata spoil that in some interview?
There's artwork where Luna is holding a ring with Insomnia in fire & wrecked in the background + we know Noctis doesn't have the ring from the start. So speculation, but not without some basis.

I think Tabata has said that they reached 1080p on PS4 but it wasn't running smoothly at the time he said that so he wouldn't commit to the final game being 1080p. Still, if they feel they can't get the game to run at a smooth 30fps throughout the game in 1080p, they'll rather drop the resolution than keep it while framerate suffers. He's made it clear that framerate is a priority.

I get suspicious when stuff becomes consumable and needs to be farmed in modern games. I better not see cool-down timers and microtransactions for magic, Square.

So just watched this

Wtf is this game going to be. There is so much going on

I hate to say it but Im not sure if Im going to enjoy this as a mechanical RPG

it has plenty of spectacle to spare i guess

It's an open-world(ish) flashy action RPG taking place in a fairly modern (still fantasy) setting that'll have some side-quests/-activities that will put you into different kinds of situations, like hunting a dangerous behemoth, racing with chocobos or wrecking shit in Niflheim's army's bases.

yeah Ive played the demo which was alright

Its a pretty awkward game.

I will give them props for making something Ive never seen before in the JRPG space

Which is why I think the latest footage is actually underselling its core mechanics, because most of battles happen very quickly in the form of flashy action. I could make a list of confirmed game mechanics for FFXV to prove that it actually had quite a bit of auxiliary system for player to learn, use and master, but I'm too lazy to do that right now.

I think the story will be complete crap, but the battle system is actually quite promising from what I've came to understand. It all boils down to execution.

It looks like it changed a bit from the demo

Now you manually switch weapons on the fly?

I wasnt a fan of the rubber band animations and attacks in the demo. Locking on almost made it harder to hit enemies as they moved around so much. Coupled with the camera swinging... was really hard to get used to basic combat

Hopefully they can lock down the mechanics so that they scale with player skill in a smooth way

Episode Duscae was a very unfinished build of the game. Not only were a lot of the basics far from polished to their final level of quality, they removed big features like magic, aerial combat & party control altogether. They've since drastically changed how certain things work (all seem to be for the better). It's no wonder some enemies were a bit hard to fight when you can't even do half of the things you will be able to do in the final game & the camera was actively fighting against you.

The final game should be far less "awkward", with all of it actually finished & in their state of full functionality. So Noctis should probably feel more responsive to control, the camera seems much improved, you've got access to far more skills & have some control over your partner AIs doings etc.

EDIT: I mean, let's take your complaint about fast moving enemies who are hard to hit in Episode Duscae. In the final game you should be able to slow them down with ice magic, you can maybe order a team mate to use some skill that stops them for long enough that you can hit them good and the camera seems like it is much better at following the enemies when locked on to them, so you have a better idea of what is happening on the battleground altogether and enemies shouldn't just be jumping in and out of your view. These few simple things will make fighting fast moving enemies far better.

I've gone trough the code of the Uncovered FFXV website and I've found some interesting bits in the Javascript file (http://www.finalfantasyxv.com/uncovered/js/main.js)

There are PC retail/Steam Store links suggesting a PC release is under way.

More pages are being prepared for the website, including a Trailer, Schedule, FAQ, Livestream, What/About and Travel pages. Now only the Home page seems live.

PC version seems to be happening, not that unexpected really.

Oh man, that'd be so fucking sweet. If it's not day and date, I'd still end up getting it on PS4 though.

Well damn. Nice find, maybe even thread worthy?

Tabata talked about his interest in Steam when asked about a PC version. Doubt it'll release alongside the console versions though.

I doubt a PC version will be announced at the event. That code is likely code from the template itself so they can easily reuse it for other games.
