Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Just wanted to guage a bit of interest for some shmups shirts I'll be printing. I'm going to be doing some cmyk screen prints on American apparel shirts and will probably sell a handful of each print.

Something a few of people would be interested in?

You'd have to show the designs before you get many bites, I think.

You forgot Gun Nac for the NES.

Yeah, I need to get my hands on that at some point.

Not to mention Gunhed aka Blazing Lazers.

Don't have anything to play those on and regrettably won't have for the foreseeable future.

just got these a few days ago
musha aleste is a bit too rich for my blood atm
:)

already beat guardic gaiden. outside of one particular boss halfway through (the blue tentacle beholder thing - that bastard was brutal) the game was fantastic. it gets a little easy once you know where all the power ups are, though. once you get the level 3 fireball and enough chips to spam everything to oblivion with it, nothing can stop you.
cleared super aleste a few hours ago on normal as well. probably one of the most forgiving shooters i've ever played...i'd liken it to the novice modes in recent cave ports. tricky and lunatic difficulty are really where it's at, and you quickly realize that charge gun is the only thing actually worth using. :)

out of these two, gun nac, and zanac x zanac, super aleste is probably my favorite compile shooter. i've only played a few levels of musha aleste so i'll have to pick that up someday and put some good time into it to make the call. my only real complaint with super is that some of the levels (especially the first one) go on for waaaay too long.

also, am i crazy or is "the perfect kiss" in the short game bgm?

I JUST beat that boss! Took me a good number of tries too. I just abused the enemy clear weapon so I at least didn't have to worry about the bullets.

Something like 1ccshirts might be successful. The limited availability gets folks excited.

Danmaku Unlimited 3's Greenlight page will be up sometime soon it seems judging by tweets from SunnyTam

I have no idea. I find myself dying in Strikers like no other game.

I was trying to play Sengoku Blade a bit today and while probably not as hard as the Strikers games it gets quite brutal. At stage 5 its the point I check out, I can't fathom the skill its takes to play that because getting hit once in the entire run is a gameover.

I came close in Strikers 1999 way back when I played it at the college arcade. It was doable cause the tech bonuses in the first four stages cutting the bosses short...and I can't remember much of the rest outside of dying on the final stage of the final boss. It all seemed very manageable though once you knew the levels well. It's possible to tech the other bosses as well but I never got their patterns down.

And apparently there's a safe spot for one of the patterns on the final boss, I didn't know about it until I saw a guy go for a 2-All at a shmupmeet. Probably would've gotten the 1CC if I knew about it way back.

Only other one I've played as heavily is Gunbird 2 (same arcade, and I have the PCB nowadays) but I've never gotten close to 1CCing that one.

I was under the impression Mushihimesama PC had a no-drm release but apparently there isn't one. What about Darius Burst?

I would if shipping to EU is reasonable.
Most ventures fail to see what a great market they're leaving on the table (especially France, even if I'm italian).

Metallica Uniframe Super Hybrid Armor, or Musha... Man, I have the best memories of this game. It has one of the first best stages in videogames, also one of the best soundtracks too

Shmup-GAF, I have a few questions.

I am in a Parodius fever lately. Got my Parodius Portable UMD out, ripped the ISO to play on PPSSPP and I am happy again.
But I wanna be happier. I need more. 5 Parodius games is not enough.

I am looking into getting Otomedius and thus have been asking myself if it is any good AND if any of the 360 games are region locked (I have a European 360). Since I have no answers to these, I am asking you these questions.

Can you answer me them, Shmup-GAF?

Otomedius G is region-locked and JP-only.

Otomedius Excellent came out in JP and NA but both releases are region-locked to their respective regions, IIRC.

Neither game is worth bothering with, IMO.

Well, the region-lock definitely prevents me from playing it ever, then :(
Guess I'll have to stick with Gradius/Salamander/Parodius.

Yep, that ones my favorite. The best is when the one boss covers her face after you destroy it. And easily one of the best soundtracks.

Remember Mecha Ritz? No? Then go play it, it's one of the most amazing (free!) doujing STGs of the last years.
Well, just a couple of days ago Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo was released, which adds more levels, ship types, polished mechanics, an arranged OST and who knows how many more cool things.
You can buy it here, and the site offer a quite nice selection of dojin games with the option for worldwide shipping.

This reads more as a promotional pitch than anything else but the truth is I'm HYPED AS HELL to play Steel Rondo, Mecha Ritz is A M A Z I N G and the wait for the game will surely kill me ;_;

Awesome, THANKS!

which garegga stan made this?
http://www.battlegareg.ga/

Oh, it's from Noah!, the beautiful person who made one-two, I was asking if anyone had a link to it since it has been unavailable for such a long time and they come back and re-uploaded the garegga site (it's from last year I think? But they took down that too)

It's a really really cool dissection of Battle Garegga, especially the Black Heart part... I'm so glad I was able to read it right as I'm tackling the game.

Depending on the style/ logo/ shift color i would be.

Crossposting from the MC-thread (I think it's more appropriate here and I'd like to know what you guys will be doing). Also super happy DBCS got a DRM-free release on GOG but still waiting on Degica to make good on their promises about Mushihimesama :(

The reason ?

Feb.25 :

I have it on my wishlist and I'm debating if I should place an order this week but I'm kinda scared it'll get an Overkill-kinda release on PS4/PC later like they also did for Caladrius with Blaze (CBlaze/RIV Overkill kinda rendered the vanilla releases useless and this Raiden V ain't cheap to import as usual), although Moss are supposedly doing a bunch of cool things with Azure/MS Cloud and the jury's still out if those features can be easily replicated on Sony's console but maybe they can do it for the (probably coming down the road) PC port.
I wish One would at least get Cave's release as BC titles, but my hopes are slim.

Also this:

Just grabbed my first physical PS2 game in 10 years, Gradius V! Last one was Gunbird SE iirc.
I'm not entirely sure Konami will work it with Sony to get it on PS4 and even if, I wanted to play it again (sold my copy a looong time ago) on a CRT and I despised the laggy version on PS3 (ps2 classics).

15€ complete, not bad I think.
10 minutes ago I busted out my launch (!!) modded/region-free PS2 and got it working after a couple attempts (thanks to the fact the game is on CD instead of DVD, since I tried a couple of DVD games and... no dice) but man I can't find my RGB-scart cable so in the meantime I had to make due with the composite cable, ugh.
My old Sony WEGA 33" Trinitron CRT is still king tho!

What are other good kinda-exclusive PS2 (all-regions) shmups?
I got R-Type Final (not a fan), Ibara (terrible port, imo), GV, Raiden III, Thundeforce VI (not a fan, last good TF was IV) and Gunbird SE (I got the first one on Dreamcast tho). Don't remember if the Gigawing on PS2 is the same as the two GW I own on Dreamcast.

DBCS is on GOG now? Sweet. Boy I haven't played any shmups in forever.

Also super happy DBCS got a DRM-free release on GOG but still waiting on Degica to make good on their promises about Mushihimesama :

It's not purely Degica's call--GOG is picky about what they will and won't release and they routinely refuse to release a lot of games for uninformed or petty reasons.

If you're talking PCBs go nuts, but if you're talking home ports I wouldn't go with Ibara's.

What's wrong with Ibara?

EDIT - Read a write up on HG101 about it. Although not perfect, it's still supposedly serviceable. However, I don't think it's worth it at that price most are asking for.

the game is already brutally difficult in itself. then remove all slowdown? good luck.

granted, I own the ps2 version, but I haven't played it since I nabbed the PCB a couple years ago.

Anybody in here 1CC R-Type? Arcade version.

Dying on stage 5 is brutal and I'm trying to figure out the best way of dealing with it. Deaths in Stage 4 are bad too, but I can sometimes pull out of those.

So next month on the 26th Game Over Videogames in San Antonio is going to do their annual Shmups night, I'll be there with various systems and shmups. It's partially my baby from when I used to work there so I tend to bring a lot. If you are in the area come by, it's fun.

Oh man that sounds awesome. Too bad none of the stores in Houston doing anything like that. At least I don't think they do

That's a tough one. I 1cc'd the SMS version back in the day, but never came close on the arcade version. Good luck!

Quick question for you all: I've just picked up an arcade stick and was wondering, are octo gates usually used in shmup arcade machines? Using a square gate doesn't really feel quite right compared to how I remember them feeling.

If you grew up playing in NA arcades then it was most likely circle gates as those were the most common to my knowledge. Square gate was an adjustment for me as well but I am glad I did for some of the benefits it offers. That said, use whatever feels best for you, nothing worse than someone who insists their control method is the only way.
