Firewatch |OT| With Me

Had some pretty bad performance issues on PS4 and it's crashed completely 3 times. I was going for a single playthrough but ended up putting it down. I am enjoying it but the linear exploration is unfortunate.

I wouldn't mind seeing this coming to Xbox One eventually. Even though by that time we've definitely already finished it. We do need more games like these though. Isnt that one Xbox One Game Preview game not similar to this?

The Long Dark? Heavy survival focused game and looks like trash compared to Firewatch.

Hmm I may be potentially stuck or I am just missing something:

I am at the part of the game where you find the kid's hideout after you first explore the cave. What do you do immediately after you find those anchors/pistons? The game is telling me to go deeper into the cave, but I can't find a way to get out of this hideout area and back into the cave. Is there a prompt that's supposed to come up that takes me back into the cave? Hoping this isn't a glitch and that I'm just missing something...

Pass through the kid's hideout, there is a rock to the left where you can place the anchor to rappel from.

There should be a spot to rappel down. You use your new found anchors in a crack for this.

If you guys are craving more narrative heavy first person mystery/exploration games holy shit get SOMA. I bought it after beating this (which I liked) and it is incredible. Also seems to not have a lot of the same issues people complain about here (longer, more gameplay/world interaction, and from what I hear the ending is fantastic).

I don't like those type of horror games though.

Also, First Person Horror like Amnesia seems to make me sick. Had to put that game down after less than 5 minutes because my head just started...spinning

man I've seen a few people get stuck there for a bit, myself included. took me like 5 minutes to figure it out.

Not gonna lie, I was stuck in that area for atleast 10 minutes. Trying to climb rocks, running back and forth. I found the spot to rappel from but I didnt find the anchors untill I accidentally picked up the thing the anchors are hidden under.

Ditto. Had to do an internet search and read a walkthrough to get past it. Thought it was just me but seems like just bad design at that particular point.

I'm currently on my second play-through, or what I like to call my "being a total dick play-through". Just choosing all the dialogue options which I was avoiding my first time with the game. Despite not changing the ending it's nice to see how much it changes up your relationship with Delilah.

There's also a couple of hidden scenes if you do a few things differently, for example
taking all the supplies instead of just your own
gives you another very brief scene with Delilah questioning you about it.

The more I think about this game and my 7 or so hours with it, the more I like and appreciate everything that it did. It's been divisive for some, but upon further reflection it's probably one of my favorite game stories ever.

Ending spoilers
I saw through the conspiracy straight away as if they're casually mentioning the place to firemen then it can't be anything special. I thought it was a lonely grad-student playing at psychiatrist.

I agree with the comments about the tonal shift and genre fake-out.

There was a point at the end where the paranoia kicked in again and I thought Delilah might leave me to burn at her watchtower

What i found interesting was the friendship with Delilah in that it was a completely platonic friendship from my PoV. I was actually surprised when some dialogue choices provided a romance option. Normally I always go for a romance in a game due to it being how you "win" the relationship and that it's a way to give my character to personal development in a plot, but in this game it didn't even occur to me.

Sometimes it was like the game was telling you to stop talking so much, like with the bee sting my reaction would have been the same a Delilah's. But I know no developer is going to put in as much effort into the null response over a reply, even if they tout the "if you're silent/walk off mid-convo NPCs will react accordingly!" feature, so I always spoke whenever I could even if some of the convo choices didn't match what the text said.

It really felt the game wanted to push towards the romantic relationship despite every other feeling I had felt like I was betraying Julia. It's a strange setup.

Ending spoilers:

I was specifically put off at how the game seemed to take the "come with me to Boulder" option was intended to be exclusively romantic. From my point of view by the end of the game, both of them were in need a good, supportive friend, which is why I picked that option. Instead I get a bunch of awkward hem-hawing and a backhanded guilt trip from her about my terminal wife. I really appreciated the choice to tell Delilah "I'm trying to move on" but I just found her reaction and the supposition that I was propositioning her into a romantic relationship to be kind of lame.

Overall I'm kind of let down by the experience in general. It felt like they kept a little too close to the Gone Home formula with the story beats and twists and in general the ending was rushed. The game needs about another hour or two of actually doing your job/putzing about in the park/chatting with Delilah to earn how fast it tumbles into it's conclusion.

There is a cool PCGamer article about the ending (Spoilers obviously). Sums up my feelings about it pretty much.
I don't necessarily disagree, but the "gut punch" the author references absolutely worked for me, as I never totally bought into what the game was presenting me as truth. There's a thing you can see before that moment that telegraphs it coming
(Brian's shoe on a ledge)
, and so as I approached that scene, I had already made the switch.

Are we any closer to a patch?

Yes. More news very soon. We've been knocking things out daily via rolling patches on Steam and they're being combined up into one patch for PS4 that will be going into cert in the very near future including those bugfixes as well as some performance improvements.

Thanks! I have it on ps4, but have been waiting for a patch so my first time is as smooth as possible. Appreciate the info.

I felt EXACTLY the opposite. I think this write up is using antiquated literary critique that completely undercuts what makes video games as a way to tell stories separate and apart from anything else in human history.

I thought it NAILED what being out alone in the woods can feel like. Your mind races to create stories about the world around you. Its decidedly human. Delilah simply was along for the ride. The fact that you experience the story like Henry is what makes video games unique. YOU felt paranoid. You discovered the "clues."

In the end, it was an exceedingly mature story about how you cant run from your problems, the fantastical isn't reality, and you don't always get the girl.

I thought it was excellent.

I was looking forward to this game, but I was disappointed.
I played through it three times trying to see if I missed something or if I could find something that would change my mind...but nope..

It really wasn't for me...especially at $20.00

Here's a more detailed take in my video review if anyone wants to check it out (no major spoilers, btw):

Okay maybe I'm blind but I don't know where to go next.
Just got through the cave for he first time, need to go back to my tower to find an anchor. Stumbled on the kids hideout, and on the other side of it is a cracked but I can't do anything with it.

Where do I go to get out of this small area?

You should be able to pick up anchors on the table of the fort. Point your mouse at that cracked rock and you can attach something to it iirc.

I'm interested in this game now with such praising reviews.

Is there another title this can be compared to? How long is it from start to finish on average?

What genre might it fall into? Is it a lot of open world collecathon stuff with pointless side quests that don't add a thing except OCD completion?

No. You cant compare it to any other game. As far as i am concerned. The dialog makes this game and I havent played another game like this.

There is dialog and choices of answers and questions in other games but its not THE focus, like in firewatch.

You might expect to finish it in 3-4 hours.

Its a story driven, dialog driven with 1% exploration first person view game. :)

No collection, no side quests, no ocd inducing.

I've played through the game twice now. It's interesting when you approach it with a new perspective. I was wrapped in the paranoia that D and H were in my first play through, but on my second it was much easier to rationalize it a bit more. I think I enjoyed it more on my second play through.

Got my photos today :D
The noise is from the Iphone 5s camera, the pictures themselves look fantastic

Sorry if this has been brought up a bunch already but:

I have been waiting so long to play this game and it's tough forcing myself to wait even more until a PS4 patch. Has there been any communication of when we could expect something like this? I don't want my first time spent with this gorgeous game to be frustrating because of technical problems.

Edit: Looks like I literally should have looked a few posts above this. Very encouraging to hear! Thanks to the whole team for being so communicative post-release.

Thanks for the update! Props to the team for working hard to get a patch out ASAP.

Finished it last night and I'm underwhelmed.
I didn't like where the story went and the conclusion was unsatisfying. The most interesting aspect, the relationship between H & D didn't go anywhere in the end. The gameplay was of course mundane with lots of backtracking on the same paths over and over.
The two redeeming qualities of the game are the dialog and art style, not much more other than that. As a pseudo-open-world game, you were also very constrained, the paths you can take or not are not clear, you can't even walk on slight slopes, etc...barely any meaningful interaction with the park, repetitive climbing sections, vague collision detection and so on. It's a beautiful but also very static and lifeless world. The idea is original but the execution and story are disappointing.

Finished the game last night. The lead up to the reveal late game was good, but the last section felt...flat. The pay-off didn't really feel all there, even if how the game ended
is more in line with what would actually happen in the real world as opposed to what I'm sure many of us thought would be a much more Sci-Fi ending.

Still glad I played it and it did get me hooked on not only the main story, but the individual stories of the characters involved.

Were Rich Sommer and Cissy Jones recorded together? The interplay was so good and natural between them.

They recorded at the same time, but in separate studios. Whenever we recorded, there was a three person skype call with Rich, Cissy, and Sean who was directing the session.

Surprised the discussion around this that I've seen has been so divisive. Unless someone didn't know what kind of game this was, I'm surprised that you could have such a big reaction to it since all of it remains pretty low key.

I enjoyed it and was impressed how it kept my attention and pulled me through the entire time so that I cared about what was happening the entire time. That's what some of these games lack (Hey there, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture!) Navigating the world was surprisingly fulfilling.

'Gone Home' is still a bit better to me as there is just something about it that made playing it a different kind of joy than other games of this type.

The TLOU Easter egg delighted the fuck out of me so thanks to whoever thought to include that.
