Firewatch |OT| With Me

Great character interaction between Henry and Delilah, they felt like believable characters. Really enjoyed my radio conversations with Delilah. At the end, I knew
I would never get the chance to meet her
but I remained hopeful nonetheless. Based on the dialogue choices I made, the ending felt bittersweet and it will stick with me for quite some time.

That being said, I played this on the PS4 and there's a whole thread dedicated as to why this was a bad choice, but that is really a gameplay gripe and has nothing to do with my enjoyment of the narrative.

Speaking of the narrative... the big conflict in the game is
Ned stalking you and causing general havoc in the woods
. But why? I felt like that was never explained. Was it because
Ned was crazy and that's why his actions didn't make sense
? Did he
actually kill his son, or did Henry just say that to make Delilah feel better
? Having the conflict be
this crazy guy is stalking us because reasons
sounds like a bit of a cop-out and left me feeling unfulfilled.

If that was what they were going for--wait, Jake, are you reading this? I'm just gonna assume you are.

If that's what you guys were going for, then it worked spectacularly well. I have grown weary of happy endings in games, so this game had a bittersweet ending that I won't forget very easily.

Wow just started playing this last night after picking it up during launch week.

I'm only on day 19 and taking it very slow but really loving he game so far!
That intro was beautifully done, truly only something that can be accomplished in games.

Love the radio dialogue between Henry and Delilah (sounds like Aisha Tyler from Archer?), it's just perfect and exactly how I hoped it would come to fruition. The game is stunning to look at too, my share button is getting a workout.

Also love the map design and use of map/compass itself, really feels unique to most other games.

Apart from the technical framerate issues on PS4, I'm really happy with what Campo have accomplished.
Hope the story keeps delivering for me all the way to the end.

Finished the game just now and it was disappointing.

After an interesting and well put together opening it just kept getting worse as I progressed.

Gameplay, more specifically how the game controlled, was headache inducing due to both technical shortcomings and questionable design choices. Traversal in the game was simply a pain in the ass.

Character development almost completely stopped halfway through the game when "the big mystery" element was introduced. Delilah and Henry's interactions centered around said mystery the rest of the game, rarely adding anything worthwhile than what's immediately observable. And when the mystery was finally solved they barely had anything to say to each other before an abrupt cut to black and credit roll.

Firewatch is simply a "neat idea, subpar execution" kind of title. I wish the dev team the best of luck in their next project and hope they learn from this game's shortcomings.

Now for more XCOM 2.

Edit:

It sounded very natural, I agree. Excellent work by the voice actors. If only the 2nd half of the game utilized them better...

Lol, what was that

Got 2 more obvious references as well for Gone Home and MGS. Didn't find any reference to TLoU though. Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention.

Patch 1.02 out on PS4? Downloading now. Apologies if this was already known but I searched the thread, checked Campo Santo twitter and couldn't find anything. It's a 3.187GB patch, so seems substantial. Wasn't expecting it this soon.

It just went up. We'll be posting patch notes and an in depth blog post in the next hour or so. It fixes a bunch of bugs (many of which we've been fixing and testing on the steam version this week) and also includes some performance improvements (framerate should be more consistent, there are fewer pops, shadows and LOD distance have been extended). We're still working with Unity and Sony on more lower level performance improvements for a TBD future update, but this patch will make the PS4 experience a lot better for people today.

Any news on the brazilian version?

Well just got done with the game it's been a long time that a narrative driven game has left me with such a satisfying feeling.

The ending was beautifully done imo and one of the most natural/real life endings with no need for over dramatisation. The music and visuals were perfect at that point.

The game sure isn't perfect story wise, but I tip my hat to Campo Santo for largely pulling Firewatch off in such a unique manner.

So thanks a lot to the devs, hope to play this again with my gf soon!

Edit: Ha, just as I literally finish game and a patch is out. Hope more people get to experience the game more smoothly because it was an issue.

Thank you for being so quick, I guess I can play it now.

Was there a MGS reference other than
the book titled "The Patriots" by Donald Anderson
?

Just came to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Great art style and atmosphere.
Yes, the story fell a bit flat at the end, but that's life for ya!

BTW, the feature to take photos and get access to them was great. Used some as wallpapers.

Thanks again Jake.

Got the game day 1, but I held strong and somehow managed to wait until now to play it, despite being hyped for this game the moment it was announced. Can't wait to unwind tonight and finally jump in :)

Fantastic timing.

I had a crash last week (I also disabled autosave...) and felt a bit bummed about having to replay the start.

Now that the patch is out, I'll try and go through it entirely.

Even with my opinion, I broke and bought my set of photos because the game is too visually beautiful to pass up getting some physical goods that help me remember the good times. :D

Regarding the easter eggs, is there a point of no return, after which you can't try to find them? Without spoilers, if possible. =)

finished the game last night on PS4. performance issues aside it was quite enjoyable. visuals & atmosphere are wonderful. the story starts out very strong but the resolution wasn’t overly satisfying.

I played this over 2 nights this week and I think it was exactly what I was expecting, which was a good narrative-drive thing that allowed two characters to really develop over the course of the game. I LOVED the dialogue/banter between Henry and Delilah, and I can kind of see why people think it was derailed by the "mystery", but wouldn't it make sense that they would focus on that instead of their own budding relationship at that point? It still felt like they were concerned for each other, even if ultimately
Delilah was the one to choose not to pursue anything - at least in my playthrough
.

I do agree with a previous poster's question about
Ned, though. After Henry saw him the first time, and was basically convinced that it wasn't important, why did Ned start his campaign of terror at all? Did he think he had to do something to make sure nobody found him? It seemed like the motivation for that is suspect and a good chunk of how the game plays out hinges on it. Especially when in the end Ned seemed like a broken man, not necessarily a crazy one.

Anyway, this is really the kind of game that resonates with me right now. Good writing, simple mechanics, player choice, doesn't overstay its welcome. Looking forward to Campo Santo's next project.

This really feels like it should go in the spoiler thread and not here so please don't click this unless you also read that thread. In my opinion...
From Ned's perspective, the new guy on the job starts fucking around in the cave on day one, which would probably be unnerving as hell if nobody had really been poking around in there for years. Ned attempts to scare him off as an overreaction and then the immediate response is for Deliilah to (to Ned's ears) threaten to tell people there's a guy out there fucking with people, so he cuts the wire and frame the teens (who have left), hoping to put the whole thing to bed. I think after that Ned chills out until he leaves the clipboard out there by mistake when Henry comes trundling in to fish, at which point things really shit the bed.

Finished it last night and I'm underwhelmed.
I didn't like where the story went and the conclusion was unsatisfying. The most interesting aspect, the relationship between H & D didn't go anywhere in the end. The gameplay was of course mundane with lots of backtracking on the same paths over and over.
The two redeeming qualities of the game are the dialog and art style, not much more other than that. As a pseudo-open-world game, you were also very constrained, the paths you can take or not are not clear, you can't even walk on slight slopes, etc...barely any meaningful interaction with the park, repetitive climbing sections, vague collision detection and so on. It's a beautiful but also very static and lifeless world. The idea is original but the execution and story are disappointing.

Can't agree with the bolded at all. I was very impressed with the sense of place, and the various lighting changes and environmental effects made it feel very alive. Some more fauna would have helped sell it, but I thought the world was easily this game's strongest attribute.

Along those lines, I was just constantly amazed at the art style. Everywhere you turn there are sights I'd happily print and put on my wall. The colors are incredible.

I bought it last night, UK here.

Listed on both the web store and the PSstore app on the console. Zing.

Site not found. That's even more annoying. So it's available in the UK PSN Store, but not the German PSN Store? Oh come on.

When I search for it, the game and the theme show up individually. Those are the only two search results. There's no PS+ discount either, by the way.

edit: Yup.

Apparently, the bundle is only available in US/UK.

Oh poo, sorry to hear that.

The discount here is over, it was just launch week, but Sony EU need to sort their shit out eitherway.

...and bought. Thank you, sir.

Finished this morning.

I kind of enjoyed it, but the ending was pretty unsatisfying, and I think £15 is way, way too much for a game this short.

It's not bad but I probably wouldn't recommend to a friend, or at least not until it goes on sale to <£5.

I binge watched Love today on netflix and I heard this guys voice and I was like "THATS FIREWATCH GUY!" couldnt stop thinking about firewatch when he talked.

I got my photos in the mail, it even comes in a pretty legit looking faux-photobooth package. They look beautiful, and I'm glad you get the entire roll instead of what you took yourself.

Just finished it. Thought it was solid. But I wish there was more back and forth conversational options (well, just more dialogue in general). It's the best thing about the game (didn't care for the mystery and the subversion of it), so the small quantity of it ultimately made the game feel kinda empty for me.

What do you mean?

End game spoilers:
I think he means you get all of the photos that were in the camera. That means you get the ones you took and the ones that were already in there that Brian Goodwin took. I think that's what he means at least.

Anyone else just consistant vague feeling of terror while playing this? I get this feeling with most fps games, and this one did it. Just waiting for doom, gets exacerbated by wearing headphones.

Anyone getting bad motion sickness with this? I wanted to play it with my partner but she can't look at it for more than 5 mins without feeling dizzy..
