The things I'd do to visit an alternate universe where Ted Woolsey translated FFVII.

Not that it wouldn't be dated by now, but it definitely would have aged better that the actual translation we got.

I know there are a LOT of people that hated Woolsey's translations, but after reading a lot of the "direct translations" done by fans(and seen in more of the recent releases of FFVI and CT), regardless of the changes he made, his still seem more entertaining. It's like Victor Ireland and Working Designs. The Lunar games, vanilla without WD's translations, but literal translations, are mediocre. Sometimes adding a little spice goes a LONG way in making a game's script/story more bearable, and/or interesting.

I don't know, I just like that quirky shit. I know many are sticklers for "true to Japanese" translations, but if the original dialog is bland, why not spruce it up during the translation phase? As long as nothing MAJOR isn't lost in the process, it shouldn't matter.

I'm really curious what he would have done with Barret and Cid.

Cid: "Put a sock in it, park yer butt down and drink your friggin' TEA!!"

maybe it was September 2027.

HAHA good one Hibiki! Original joke about FFXV taking forever to be made! HAHAHA

But in all seriousness, I just hope it comes out at a completely different time than any other games I want. Whether that's September, October, November, or even Decemeber 27th, I don't care. I just need it to not collide with other releases.

I agree, but if it does come close to another game I want then I will give full priority to FF XV.

FFIX has excellent dialogue.

Yup -- far from my favorite FF, but the dialogue is actually really tightly done.

Less showy, but better than XII's, I think. While the latter has its moments, Smith's faux-Elizabethan dramalogue is often too stilted and forced.

Also, although VI's dialogue is minimalist and often hammy, it functions extremely well to paint the characters in broad strokes.

Nomura was playing the game on stage, I know, WTF? I don't remember the demo though, but the release date at the end was 09/27, which is a tuesday!!! Maybe it's a premonition!!!!!!

If that date ends up being correct, I will personally buy you a Special Edition of the game.

And then you shall be put to trial for witchcraft and sorcery. And I'm not sure I will be able to help you then.

Well the Last One confirmed the release date as September 27.

His dream cannot be wrong

I always think that there is going to be a new tidbit of information or that something leaked when I see the bump.

Just 41 more days ;_;

Sometimes we just need a post or two daily here to not forget about the prince.

I've been playing FF8 and FF7 for the first time on my Vita and I REALLY like them. Especially FF7. Like WHOA.

8 is my fav FF

If with the low standards of game writing FFVII is pretty terrible in terms of story. Listening to that dialogue in the modern day poorly acted by terrible actors makes it even more egregious. The more realistic these games, the more the dialogue starts to be even more like it was conceived by someone who's never had a legit conversation even with the fantasy setting.
I haven't played a JRPG with english V/O in years. Japanese audio with subs or not at all. Really the only way to see the story acted out with no translation errors or edits. And overall it sounds alot more convincing.

I've seen some eastern films with genuinely great acting. JRPG in the original language is....quite far from that.

On the subject of the dialogue and VA. I'm pessimistic that the issue will be addressed any time soon with Squares games so I check my standards at the door. Even then it'll be difficult if VIIR's isn't a lot better than what we heard in the last trailer.

It is nice to day dream about a Final Fantasy with Last of Us tier voice acting though. One day perhaps......

Good man. :)

I want to be wrong because I'd prefer early September. PLS, SQUARE!

Final Fantasy XIV.
In Japanese maybe. IMO, the English dialogue in FFXIV is one of its weakest points. It's way too elaborate (they even had to make the font in the text box small enough that you can hardly read it on PS3/PS4 even with zoom!) and grandiloquent, making the dialogue sound more like a chain of royal monologues most of the time. The naming choices make it even worse. Choosing Japanese audio helps for the voice acting, but the dialogue remains bad, especially in contrast to other FFs. FFIX is a prime example of how it should be done: short pieces of text in the style that these characters would use, not using an extensive vocabulary for each character just to show off the translator's skills.

Anyway, back to FFXV: the new post on the Japanese blog is nothing special -- just an interview with an environment artist: http://mypage.member.jp.square-enix.com/18/blog/detail/316230/

DualShockers has a summary of the Dev Blog, can't link, though:

The “New Map!!” wording might get you excited, and you wouldn’t be the only one falling for it. The same happened to the game’s Community Manager:

“February 19th: Wandering among the developers in search of the story for today, the wording “New Map!!” suddenly jumped to my eyes. Is it new information about the map? It actually was the chart of the seating [of the developers]. I’m disappointed!”

On the official blog we get a picture of Sasaki-san working on a dungeon and a few further tidbits of info about his role:

  • The environment team is abbreviated “ENV.”
  • At the moment the team is working on improving the visual quality, balancing light and shadows and other elements like the smoothness of the ground.
  • The team is working on making the environment beautiful but also dark and scary, so that gamers won’t forget them.
  • They’re also responsible for setting the rules in the dungeon, like walking height and the angle of slopes that can be overcome.
  • In many games battles happen on a flat surface, but Final Fantasy XV‘s engine allows combat on sloped surfaces.
  • The team debated whether pushing more aggressive rules to control the behavior of enemy characters. In the end they decided to give priority to gameplay comfort. This kind of discussion results in improved quality.

So...im confused.... are they going back to Kingdom Hearts-like combat now? I feel like they are just toying with my heart at this point.

The aim to offer an action RPG that is somewhat like KH (flashy, fast-paced) but has a slightly heavier feel hasn't changed, just the way one actually controls the action is a bit different from the command menu based one KH has.

Outside o the dodging mechanic this was not reflected in Duscae at all

Probably because the aerial combat wasn't implemented yet in the demo. In hindsight I think it's pretty obvious Duscae was nothing more than them throwing in whatever combat mechanics they had polished at the time to get fan feedback on their design choices.

In ED we could either hold a button to auto-attack or individually press the attack button consecutively, but now after taking in feedback they went further than that and implemented two completely separate battle modes, one catered to more action technical gamers and the other towards more casual players (I'm guessing this one is for turn-based fans). They haven't gone into detail about the battle modes yet.

Yes, and that's mostly because they removed quite a lot of features and it was unfinished in many other ways as well. So not only did you not have some pretty major "yeah, this is still KH-ish" battle features like aerial combat (well, apart from the Phantom Swords, which was extremely limited), even some of the features the demo DID have were still half-complete/gimped & clumsy in the way unfinished gameplay often is. Still, the battle/tech demo in Insomnia they showed at the same time they revealed Episode Duscae as well clearly showed that they were working on KH-like combat even at the time, even if it wasn't showcased much in ED.

Sounds good. I like the idea of making the environment beautiful, but also potentially dark and scary. I need my horror RPG fix dammit.

The red sky is likely going to be story related but I hope it happens often and not just once. It looks seriously cool! I'm sure since Luna has the power to stop the plague of stars (I assume this is related) we will be seeing it often.

Well the game world is supposed to have the nights become longer and longer as you progress through. So maybe this is like the dusk period maybe? I agree that it is totally story related and I am curious to see where it fits.
