FINAL FANTASY XV - Niflheim Base Battle Footage

The red sky is likely going to be story related but I hope it happens often and not just once. It looks seriously cool! I'm sure since Luna has the power to stop the plague of stars (I assume this is related) we will be seeing it often.

Well they said the nights will get progressively longer, i think the red moon will be the final stage of this process but really late into the game when everything has gone to shit and you just have to slay the final boss, kinda like the looming Meteor in the FFVII overworld.

With the red moon it reminds me of the final moments of FFXIV 1.0. Such an epic ending scene

FFXIV final moments skip to about 5 minutes in.

I hope the final boss XV is something like that except we get to defeat it. No escape, no time warp to safety.
Easily my most anticipated thing in regards to FFXV is fighting certain enemies in real time. FF12 almost felt like a critique of Final Fantasy strategy being very prescriptive in that most if not all classic enemies have a very specific way to be taken down that carriers through most of the games. Putting everything real time throws those preconcieved strategies out the window.

Also battling out with some of the stranger enemies is going to be great, especially those god-like final bosses is going to be crazy.

I want to fight FFXV's cactuars!!

I want to see FFXV's cactuars!!

I want to see FFXV's everything. Really love how they are treating all of the monsters with the care and detail of making them real. Not a whole lot of stylization going on, even in the more "realistic" Final Fantasy (8,12), there were exaggerations in texture work and geometry due to the technology. Love the texture and modelling work in FFXV. Clearly taking textures from actual animals gives this really wonderful and slightly unnerving mix of familiar and unfamiliar. Really something I havent seen in any game before.

EDIT: A cactar with realistic cactus shader and needles is going to be amazing and hilarious.

Red moons seem to be a "thing" in the FF series.
FFIV's second moon(
Lunarian Moon
) is referred to as the Red Moon(they say it's growing redder).
latest

FFIX's second moon's also red, because
it reflects the glow of Terra's crystal.
latest

There's also FFVIII's moon, that turns red before the Lunar Cry phenomenon. And, of course, Dalamud in FFXIV.

If anything, the red moons tend to have some relation to evil or destructive forces terrorizing the planet. If FFXV does the same, it's red moon will also have some significance.

Pretty confident we'll have air battles with Aranea. I also predict Noct will go full super saiyan mode by the end of the game after losing everyone. DBZFF here we come.

I love how this concept leaked into the Chrono series. Chrono Trigger's moon was blood red during the epic fight with Queen Zeal atop the Black Omen. And of course there's the second moon in Chrono Cross
(the Reptites' moon)
.

Yeah I know it is nothing new to the series. I am always interested in how they implement it though.

I doubt Bahamut will pop out and fuck shit up though!

Hmm, why not? Titan is basically in a meteor crater right? What if all the Archaeans descend from the moon, meteor style?

What was even in the last blog post?

DualShockers has a summary of the Dev Blog, can't link, though:

The “New Map!!” wording might get you excited, and you wouldn’t be the only one falling for it. The same happened to the game’s Community Manager:

“February 19th: Wandering among the developers in search of the story for today, the wording “New Map!!” suddenly jumped to my eyes. Is it new information about the map? It actually was the chart of the seating [of the developers]. I’m disappointed!”

On the official blog we get a picture of Sasaki-san working on a dungeon and a few further tidbits of info about his role:

  • The environment team is abbreviated “ENV.”
  • At the moment the team is working on improving the visual quality, balancing light and shadows and other elements like the smoothness of the ground.
  • The team is working on making the environment beautiful but also dark and scary, so that gamers won’t forget them.
  • They’re also responsible for setting the rules in the dungeon, like walking height and the angle of slopes that can be overcome.
  • In many games battles happen on a flat surface, but Final Fantasy XV‘s engine allows combat on sloped surfaces.
  • The team debated whether pushing more aggressive rules to control the behavior of enemy characters. In the end they decided to give priority to gameplay comfort. This kind of discussion results in improved quality.

Also do we know if SE is going to have an E3 conference again yet?

Official English transaltion of last week's dev interviews:

==========

Well then, here is Taji’s first interview!

Lv1 new guy Taji’s FFXV development staff interviews!

Our first interview will be with Environment artist Mr. Hiromitsu Sasaki, who is in charge of creating the dungeons for FFXV!

*He is the guy from the rocky terrain location hunting video who everyone was talking about on Twitter!

Before we start the interview, I would like to explain a little about how the system used to build the maps in FFXV is organised.

The maps in FFXV are divided into 3 sections; the world map, locations and dungeons, and each of those sections has a different developer in charge of them.

The dungeon building part that Mr. Sasaki is in charge of involves creating the visuals and backdrops for inside the caves.

What he works on

Taji

Mr. Sasaki, thank you for joining us today.

Sasaki

Thank you.

Taji

Ok, let’s get straight into it, please tell us what you do.

Sasaki

I am the lead ENV artist on the dungeon team.

Taji

Env.. enviro…?

Sasaki

Environment, from the English. Basically, the team that make the backdrops. We shorten it to ENV.

Taji

ENV eh? Thanks. So your team of ENV artists create the graphics for the dungeons in FFXV right?

What exactly are you working on at the moment?

Sasaki

We are fine tuning the lighting and textures in the dungeons right now. It links directly with improving the final visual quality.

We are really tweaking how things look, such as the balance between light and shadows, making sharp rocks look like they would hurt if you touched them or surfaces to look slippery etc.

*You can see one of the dungeons on Mr. Sasaki’s screen.

Taji

Modern games all have such beautiful graphics, so this is an important stage in ensuring that high final quality!

What to watch out for in Mr. Sasaki’s work

Taji

So is there anything in particular that you want the fans to look out for in FFXV?! I would be grateful if you could answer that from a developer perspective based on your actual work on the game!

Sasaki

When making the dungeons they have to be dark and scary, but I also never forget to make them beautiful as well and aim to make something that sticks in the player’s memory. Aside from that… I am also in charge of something a bit gruesome called “regulation”…

Taji

So what is this reg.. regu.. regul… this gruesome thing then?

Sasaki

It’s called “regulation”, again from the English (Lol).

Essentially it is making the rules. There are lots of rules that govern the game world, and I fine tune those rules. For example, the height of terrain you can walk over or the angles of slopes etc. And FFXV attacks those rules fairly viciously!!

Taji

Fairly viciously eh?!

Sasaki

Indeed (Lol)

For example the slope angles. When you are placing monsters in the world, most of the time they will be fighting on flat terrain, but for FFXV you can also have battles taking place on some pretty severe terrain, such as steep slopes. In that sense FFXV really pushes the rules of the environment so there are heated debates on how those rules should handle things, right down to deciding on a single angle etc.

Taji

Heated debates?

Sasaki

Yeah, heated debates (Lol).

The more you push the rules, the more things you cannot control about character and enemy behavior. When you look closely you sometimes see that the visuals look off or that attacks aren’t landing because of the terrain rules, and thus battle cannot take place.

We really want to prioritise the gameplay feeling good over small graphical failures, but if you do that then the visuals start to look bad, so there are debates about what the best way to handle things is (Lol).

Taji

All the development staff have somewhat of an attitude that they won’t compromise on quality don’t they? I guess you get these kinds of conflicts when nobody wants to budge on anything.

Sasaki

That’s right. But that is what makes things interesting. When faced with a conflict like that the team naturally comes together to try out various things and it ultimately results in the quality improving.

Taji

That is a fascinating topic. It sounds like there are passionate debates every day about how to bring the most fun and excitement to the game!

I personally like the battles in FF very much and really get excited thinking about playing those kinds of battles across naturalistic terrain. I think players will enjoy the battles in FFXV in a new and exciting way, different from the battles seen previously in the FF series. So FFXV is one to watch there!

So Mr. Sasaki, when people think of you they remember the rocky terrain location hunting video on Twitter. What is the exact relationship between location hunting and making the game? The term “location hunting” brings to mind TV or filmmaking rather than games…

Location hunting

Sasaki

Our location hunting is slightly different to when a TV series would look for places to film. There are broadly two types we do.

These are when the objective is to experience something and when we go to collect design reference resources, and the rocky one was of the latter type. Talking about taking pictures for design resources, recently we often use a method called photo scanning that lets you create a 3D model from a photograph. It requires photo data from all angles and thus consumes an incredible amount of memory; probably over 10 times what it would to produce the same in-game object on a PS3. Incidentally, the reasons why we go out of our way to do location hunting and collect data is because it is actually quicker to use real rocks to get the data and it obviously improves the final quality as well.

Taji

It looks like it takes a lot of time to go out on location hunts but is that not the case then?

Sasaki

If you gather information before heading out and are clear on what data you want then it does not take all that much time. For example, something that would take 3 days’ worth of work at my desk can be done in half a day with a location hunt and would not incur the same costs.

Taji

So location hunting improves the quality and does not cost time or money? I guess there is no reason not to do it eh?!

So for the rock we saw on Twitter, did you have an image in your head when you started?

Sasaki

That’s right. The one I found was quite close to the rock I had drawn in my head. We endeavor to keep the costs down while creating high quality game worlds that feel even more real through collecting good resources like that rock.

Taji

So even one rock takes a lot of effort then!

Sasaki

That’s true. We really take care with the history and story behind each area, with all the rocks and wildflowers etc. For FFXV we started creating the world terrain from the continental level, with the mountain ranges and the flow of the rivers etc. and have polished it to a level where each region and location actually has its own unique climate and topography.

Taji

So creating on the continental level… does that mean that the world of FFXV has seen things like tectonic plate shifting over many centuries like on Earth?

Sasaki

That’s exactly right. So we don’t just plonk down the assets that we photographed on our location hunts willy-nilly, and actually consider the right geographical situations to use them in, looking at how this continent would have been in a certain way in the distant past and how that would make this particular piece of ground form in a certain way or things like that.

Taji

Things in the natural world really do change a lot depending on the environment you find them in don’t they?

All the rock information that our followers posted on Twitter also shows the unique characteristics of those locations.

Sasaki

The team looked at all the rock references that people sent in and got very enthusiastic about it. There were some places we learned about for the first time and it was all really useful reference info for us. As we are now in the final stages of development we don’t go on many location hunts at the moment, but if we can find good leads on reference data, not just for rocks but for anything, then we will always go out and photograph it.

Thanks to everyone for sharing your rock information with us!

Taji

As community manager I would like to go on a location hunt too and let all the fans out there know about all the info we gather first hand. So to finish off I would like to hear a comment from one of the people who read this blog.

Comment

Sasaki

Thank you for all your support everyone. We don’t get many opportunities to show people what goes on behind the scenes in game development, so I am happy that people can see it and that they show an interest in what we do.

Taji

Thank you very much. Do you have anything else you would like to say?

Sasaki

Well… Let me tell everyone about the similarities between weight training and game creation?

Taji

!? Now you mention it a lot of the FFXV development staff are pretty beefy aren’t they?...

Sasaki

I spoke to Mr. Tabata about this too and there really is a parallel there! It might get a bit longwinded but are you ok with me explaining it here?

Taji

Mr. Tabata thinks so too? I have to hear this! But unfortunately we have run out of time for today. So sorry, but please could you tell us next time when we get another opportunity to speak. (LoL) If all the fans want to hear about it then we will put something solid on the plan! Thank you for your time today!

So that was environment artist Sasaki Hiromitsu!

Yeah, look above. :P The official translation just combined both last week and this week's blog post. Today's blog post was an interview continuation with the environment artist.

Oh, the interview is updated then. Now we have to wait for the next update on friday =p

Thank you photogrammetry.

FFXIII
Speaking with a Square Enix artist who was proudly showing off her portfolio, we asked her if she was just as proud of her work on FFXIII. “Of course,” she said. So we asked what she’d been working on that day. She paused, “A rock. I’ve been working on a single rock that appears in only one scene, for three seconds, for the past three days.”

Before we could ask whether this was standard operating procedure, another Square Enix employee chimed in, “That’s how that team works, everybody spends a lot of their days polishing rocks.”

Friday will have an interview with a 2D artist working on NPCs.

I'd have wanted them to hint more dungeon types than just caves like ruins or shrines but maybe they want to keep those a secret.

Yes! im hoping for dungeons like Tomb of Raithwall, Pharos, Ancient City of Giruvegan from FFXII

Perhaps a dungeon related to the Caelum family

I know this has been said countless times but....

I still would pay money to have Noctis wear Sasuke costumes. I know I'm the only guy that wants that. Haha

The Noctis and Sasuke comparison is so played out rofl.

Anyway, my brother finally got on the hype train! He only played VI, VIII and X and he was on the fence about XV (since Versus) for years. The latest trailer got him psyched. Now he wishes he was going to the event instead of working lol

I am getting all my friends who were never into FF really hyped about it. It does truly help that there isn't a turn based system since most found it boring. Or they can't go back and play the old ones since they don't like old graphics :(

But yeah I am glad to see a lot of new people as well as the diehard FF fans all embracing this. (For the most part)

Please no... The farther away from Naruto the better

Ya know... The early volumes of Naruto manga is pretty freaking amazing. It has mystery, drama, and insanely good character development. It got crazy and chaotic towards the end but the early volumes aren't bad at all. Hopefully FF XV has awesome character development we all wanna see. We're gonna be around Prompto, Gladiolus, and Ignis over the course of the game so hopefully we see those guys change/grow as well as Noctis.

Everybody is saying Noctis is gonna end up super powerful and full of remorse because his friends are dead at the end. I don't think any of the guys or even Luna are dying.

Weird that I barely noticed this but Noctis is one of the few protagonists to have normal black hair right? I mean Squall's hair was dark brown so I guess it doesn't count. I don't really remember anyone else.

Cloud had blonde hair.. Blonde hair isn't normal? lol Even though Zidane was part monkey he had regular colored hair same with Tidus and the cast from XII for the most part, they had "normal" hair lol

Normal might have been the wrong word to use, lol. Most common hair color is what I meant. But yeah, a lot of the protagonists have had blonde hair. I guess you can count Zack as well. Even though Crisis Core wasn't really a new numbered entry in the mainline series.

They should make a mall a dungeon. I always get lost in these.

No shit, while not a dungeon, I had a dream I was playing a FF game(I think it was FFIX before it was released) where one of the locations was this, what I can best describe as a fantasy medieval mall of merriment. It was two-story, the bottom floor seemed to restricted to a great, long, dance floor where posh royal-types were doing the waltz and such, while the upper floor(which was actually ground level, while the bottom floor was lower), featured lots of classic RPG shops(weapons, armor, relics, items, and even classic FF white and black magic shops). There was also a casino, a swanky cafe/bar, a high class restaurant(that was large, took up the two floors and had it's own river inside), and a theater/concert hall at the far end. It was strange, but in my dream, felt.... right.

Wasn't the closest we got to a mall in the FF series was that location in Esthar?
latest

Fuck that, I want a mall in a new FF game! Could be futuristic, modern or like in my dream(medieval fantasy mall!).

There's two parts to the term "normal black" hair.

About the second half, black is pretty common but so are other colors.

About the first half, 'normal' is something that Cloud's hair isn't.
