I really messed up that my machine gunner there, still gonna bother me.

I'm having trouble viewing the game history right now, so I'm not sure on the actual game ID on the last one there.

;)

But yes, this match was a mess at sec. 0. All these rockets/grenades...

Six grenade launchers in that second match, haha.

You could have gone bit easy on my poor soul on those matches. :D Holy hell what a massacres those games were. Where's the 'I've Made a Huge Mistake.gif' when you need it.

Edit: Started second matches with TheDanimal and archnemesis too.

I am still hoping for one of you stealing a win from (my) archnemesis and then I need all the kills I can get. :)

Good luck with your last matches ;)

rockets have it hard vs grenades, but I'll take it.

Great games group D. Sorry my mind wasn't as grizzled as it once was but I had fun. Good luck Corto and Acccent!

Checked my match history and I have indeed played everyone twice. Good games group D, enjoyed my time. Now go and win the tournament so I can have an excuse for losing so much :D

Great games group D buddies! This last one with n8 though was very fun. Kabloooom all around and learned a few things with it too! hehe Please add me on Steam my ID is on my profile here on GAF. Cheers!

Yup group D was very close, gg to all ^_^

Corto and I will make sure to honour your valiant efforts, n8 and Balthuk (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧

edit: btw, I've been looking at some videos and some of you move your units after having them crouch... I'm pretty sure units don't get any kind of bonus by crouching vs standing up; actually, they get a penalty for a short period of time after changing their stance. So the only reason to crouch is to hide behind low walls, really.

Another new feature that will particularly change the multiplayer is what they’re calling “advanced tactics”, a new set of orders that can be programmed into troops to tell them how to react to changing events as they occur: “if X happens, switch to plan Y.” That’s a big change, but smaller ones are in the works as well. “We’re just trying to deal with a few of the problems people have with the first game,” says Hardingham. “We had a problem with people abandoning games, we’re gonna be working really hard to fix that. There was a specific ploy in multiplayer called the distraction ploy¹ that I’m not a particular fan of, we’re getting rid of that.”

<- Crazy. I get programming in my FS now? o.o
I will breath this game.

That just seems more complicated than it should be. The if/else should just be "if under fire->get to cover as fast as possible... else->move freely" or something.

That would be way too easy and simplistic though and result in the same move every time. If you can set zones however, and then say stuff like "If enemy X is here, move there" or "If there are 2 enemies here, throw grenade, otherwise run".

That would be soooo amazing.

Well, the problem (IMO) is the combat rules aren't intuitive. Crouching has no purpose for most people unless going into cover to have better concealment and the like. Aiming in the original was hard to "see" where the unit would engage.

The aiming is one of the things that Double 11 fixed in the console port IMO. But the rules of engagement was still hard to understand. It's why I'm hoping for the sequel they'll actually make the combat more understanding instead of these (IMO pointless) over complications in the planning. That's not going to retain players or bring new players in. People have to understand why they lost instead of "oh well I guess I didn't aim correctly????" on plans.

They mentioned that "how to teach people" aspect in the articles, but simplifying it is not a solution either. Its the reason why me, and I suppose others as well didnt stick long with Cortex. I mean its basically the two niches these games carve out. Complex tactics versus accessible tactics. But yeah, there could be some improvements to the UI.

Well played to the other guys in my group - i think ive played all my games and will go through the thread to see if my game results have been posted

Group: B
Player A: Jazzerman // Win // Killed Soldiers: 4 // Lost Soldiers: 1
Player B: titch71 // Loss // Killed Soldiers: 1 // Lost Soldiers: 4
Game ID: 1340688

Hey i think that should count as a win for me i mean i managed to kill one of Jazzermans guys :) :)

Group: B
Player A: titch71 // Loss // Killed Soldiers: 1 // Lost Soldiers: 4
Player B: OmegaDragon // Win // Killed Soldiers: 4 // Lost Soldiers: 1
Game ID: 1340033

I think i still have to play OmegaDragon another game as i cant see it on my history list?

I thought i had finished my other game with instro but it didnt show on my to play list?

I've made my moves so sorry for the delay

I'm okay with them getting rid of that distraction ploy stuff. It always felt a bit cheesy, but mostly it slowed the game down since you had to spend so much time checking timings on it.

Could be as simple as carrying over your current targeting bonuses to any other target that pops up within a certain distance of your original target, i.e. you're shooting MG 1 when MG 2 pops out behind the same cover, then MG 1 ducks. You keep shooting MG2 with the same timing as 1.

2 days left for group matches.

Updated the google doc.

Group B still has a possible fight for rank 2 with instro and titch both at 3 points and omega at 0.

And in Group E, Large professor could theoretically still beat DunderHassan to the second place.

Other than that, all the other groups are probably set.

Yeah I've had some issues with that. Right now I still have that 2nd game with you, and a 2nd game with OmegaDragon.

FYI Toma you missed the game titch posted in the above quoted post.

Sorry for the late responses guys

Group: B
Player A: OmegaDragon // Win // Killed Soldiers: 4 // Lost Soldiers: 2
Player B: Instro // Loss // Killed Soldiers: 2 // Lost Soldiers: 4
Game ID: 1340787

Unfortunate suicide by Instro's rocketeer at the end. BTW I figured that you'd kill my top most rocketeer right away, so I didn't even think of moving him.

Still 2 games in progress. I'm in the process of getting wrecked by Jazzerman. Game vs titch can go either way.

Well I figured I might be able to get a two for one if you ended up leaving him in place and moved one of your other pieces closer to the middle near the end of the turn. Lol at my suicide though, that's the second time I've blundered with my rocketeer. I botched a potential win in my first game with Jazzerman in a similar way. Apparently I need to double check when I set their movements.

Also:

Group: B
Player A: Instro// Win // Killed Soldiers: 3 // Lost Soldiers: 2
Player B: titch71// Loss // Killed Soldiers: 2 // Lost Soldiers: 3

Not sure what happened at the end there, apparently my gunner was not engaging, maybe he was still stuck to not engage on sight. Another turn, and I probably would have lost.

Looks like OmegaDragon will go through with Jazzerman.

Yeah i was wondering why i wasnt dead already lol - well played to those in my group.

Hopefully the winner comes from one of the two that have qualified.

That way i dont feel too useless ;)

Alriiight, so the participants for the elimination round are:

Ranked 1st:

Codeblue
Jazzerman
Vlad
Accent
CosmicSchwung
Archnemesis
Najaf
Immoral Wombat

Ranked 2nd:

Volodja
OmegaDragon
kalor
Corto
DunderHassan
Toma
Swarley64
The_Super_Inframan

From next round on, it is going to be a randomized tournament tree with 2 rules:
  • Players from the same group will not play each other in the next match
  • Every player who ranked 1st, gets to play someone ranked 2nd (and vice versa)

Randomizing the matches now accordingly.

Reposting with the correct match ups:

Codeblue - OmegaDragon
ImmoralWombat - Dunderhassan

Archnemesis - The_Super_Inframan
Vlad - Volodja

Accent - kalor
Jazzerman - Corto

CosmicSchwung - Swarley64
Najaf - Toma

Well... fate steers us together my dear youtube commentating friend. And so shall we meet, Najaf! ;) I need to admit I chuckled a bit when the result was clear, after I was waiting for your or my name to pop up every turn.

Rules:
  • 2 Matches Dark Extermination. If you won both, you are through to the next round.
  • If both players win a match, or draw both matches, the third match shall be with the mode "Calliope" (Dark Extermination tournament map).
  • Kills have no tournament related effect anymore, but please continue to list them in the result posts
  • Everyone has 1 week, until Sunday 20/03/16 to finish his matches. If we are finished earlier, we will start the next round earlier, so please check back in the thread once in a while.

Well, sent off my two game invites already. One of them has us both starting with three rocket launchers and a machinegunner... should be interesting.

Man I don't know how to feel about all the changes for the sequel...seven or eight new units (!!!), unit stats, that advanced programming thing...I loved the first game for its chess-like predictability and simplicity. It was already a niche affair and I feel all this stuff is going to make the barrier of entry and overall skill ceiling so high that there will be even less players around after a couple months. It will just be the handful of hardcore obsessed guys playing amongst themselves.

Oh, god. Probably gonna be a quick one, huh.

I'll play them one of these days, as soon as I have enough time to actually sit and think about what I'm doing for at least 10 minutes.

I get that concern, but I mean they did do a good job so far carving out different audiences. I totally agree with you on this in general, but a) there still could be easy to pick up legacy modes/modes that limit these kind of choices and b) I dont really see an issue with them evolving the game into something more complex. They have FS, they had Frozen Cortex as a more simplified version and now they go full on tactics.

Besides, they want to add some complexity, while at the same time remove some nuisances like the bait kills, which might lead to a completely different style of play (as that is basically what makes FS most complex atm).

I am very curious indeed.

I shouldn't make tactical decisions while having a cold, those poor, poor faceless and nameless soldiers that will die because of my incompetence :P

edit: there is more music DLC coming to FS

seems like a game unrelated EP from nervous_testpilot
