In war, there are no winners

edit: again, people, stop crouching for no reason :s In both matches there are instances of units crouching when it doesn't give you an advantage at all... and it could even cost you the game. Crouching = only to hide below walls. No change in aiming or efficiency or anything. And going from standing to crouching, or vice-versa, gives a penalty to the unit for a short duration.

I shouldn't make tactical decisions while having a cold, those poor, poor faceless and nameless soldiers that will die because of my incompetence :P

edit: there is more music DLC coming to FS

That double shotgun kill from 2 sides in match 2 was brutal.
But I guess we have our first Calliope match on our hands. :)

Not gonna be able to get to my computer til Thursday. Sorry Omega.

Just do your turns on the weekend then. I highly suggest to talk about a certain date/time where you both have 2 hours free on the weekend. If time gets too short, you can also play with "soft" 15 minutes timers and just try to stick with that time range for both players.

On a different note!

If someone ever wondered what goes through my head when planning a full move, behold the next uploaded video. 1 hour of thinking, deliberating and talking for 5 seconds. I doubt it would be this much for all upcoming turns, but at this rate its like a small audio book when I talk about 25 seconds of Frozen Synapse.

Oh I'll do that with my next game against kalor! I'll obviously only upload once the game is over though :P

Me too, I was contemplating uploading them move by move and not tell much about future plans, but... that doesnt really work. I also noticed how much difference the setup makes. One match took me 1 hour of talking, the second match 30 minutes. The 1 hour one should also be much more interesting to listen to.

Unless you devastatingly beat me, then I need to crawl under a blanket to never appear again. :p

Found myself going three layers deep due to watching your commentaries. "Going here is the obvious choice. But Toma will know that is the obvious choice, so here is the best alternative. But Toma will know that I know he's expecting me to take the less obvious choice, so maybe the best choice is the obvious one? But Toma would know that I know that he knows... Arghhh!!!"

I had the exact same predicament, haha :D

Hey thanks for doing that, I was wondering how people think about their moves since I'm quite inexperienced. Looking forward to it.

Hmmm, the new music DLC should be up but instead it says 'expected soon'. I was looking forward to buying it for the ocassion of this tournament.

Anyway, I'll get to my match tomorrow, sorry for the wait DunderHassan.

Couple more results. Swarley had a really unfortunate set up in the first game which I'm ashamed to say I took advantage of. Second one got really tense for me as I thought Swarley had the upper hand for a couple of turns, but some weirdness during the planning phase had him walk one of his guys into a grenade when it told him he'd still be clear so we're not sure what happened there.

Yeah, I figured out what happened... when I was running the simulation, my machinegunner was aiming/shooting at the "ghosts" of two of your guys and I didn't account for that at all. So when the real turn was played out he just walked right into the grenade instead of standing still and shooting.
That was a real tense game right up until Turn 6, it could've gone either way!

Thanks for setting up this tournament, it was a lot of fun to dust this game off and play it for the past few weeks!

Ah, that explains it. The way ghosts are implemented is so annoying. Having to set your guys to ignore them during planning and then remove that before priming is a pain.

This thread made me reinstall FS. Does Steam's "Turn waiting" notification not go away for anybody else?

Once I've played out the turn it usually disappears otherwise I have to set it to ignore that notification and then restart steam. What I would like to know is how to get it stop notifying me of games that have finished even after I've set them to ignore.

I'm loving these games with Jazzerman very tense and fun trying to enter the other player mind. Will he optimize his play? Will he feign to optimize and then go for a completely left field play? So much fun! Can't wait for the tie breaker.

Same for me and Najaf. He already destroyed me in one match, so I am hoping I can etch out a win in the other one to save myself into the tie breaking match.
I just prepared the most elaborate move and he destroyed it all with a single move, haha.

I really can't wait to listen to your comments on that one. Tense!

Also, just because I need someone to know, your rocket missing the wall on the other match, I did that on purpose. Feels so good to predict a move correctly. Wish I had been recording my planning phases so we could both hear the others thoughts.

Crazy good move, I actually had my rocket only aimed there to take care of the shotgunner in case he rushed in to get a double kill at least.

Yes, I needed to rush with SG and figured your MG was going to continue into the room (brilliant move opening the wall to flank by the way!) I knew I risked your rocket hitting the back corner wall. I figured you knew I would back away from the southwest covers and knew you were definitely going to fire a rocket that round, so it was either going to be the wall you ultimately shot at or the wall just north of there above the doorway, which would have taken you more time to traverse to line up a shot. I did not know exactly where your rocket was so had to guess based on last known position. I figured you would shoot the southern corner to cover any troop advance from the south and also try and catch my SG rush in. Me shooting the same wall covered your MG advance down the corridor but more importantly, it was going to make your rocket miss which would have killed my SG.

You really surprised me with the first wall shot and MG flank. I thought for sure you had gone back to the large cover to the east, hence me targeting it.

so, after I spent like an hour setting up and recording my turn against kalor, there was a power cut in my house and I lost everything (not to mention all the non-FS stuff). so, yeah, sorry folks, I'll just play it with no commentary for now – maybe for a future game.

Snipers can be brutal. I had not considered that they might show up in the tie breaking custom matches. Well played.

Well, I'd say the turn played out in your favour either way :p. Still, if you feel the game screwed you over I'm okay with abandoning that match and making a new one, if that's alright with Toma.

Yep, if its fine with both of you, then sure.

Yeah the issue isn't the outcome itself, but rather that I played after a completely different scenario.
But let's just keep on, as Toma said, it isn't the first bug we encountered in FS and I'll just have to suck it up and try to turn this around somehow :P
I just wish you were able to cancel a committed turn, then we wouldn't have this issue at all.

Player B: Volodja // Loss // Killed Soldiers: 1 // Lost Soldiers: 2

All those rockets made for an interesting start which quickly devolved into a stalemate once the machinegunners were eliminated. Eventually we just ended up seeing how many walls we could blow up before the end of the match.

This was a much closer match. Between a close call between my shotgunner and a rocket in the beginning, to a tense showdown in a tiny room at the end, it all boiled down to having to guess whether Volodja would decide to try to storm in or sneak around the side.

Here's a youtube link to a commentary of the game that I recorded before the last turn was submitted:

Toma, is this fine, or do you want me to record the full game, uninterrupted and without the commentary?

hahaha that first match is hilarious.
gg on the second one, some good tactical choices in there!

Those were fun games, though I feel like I could have done far better in the first game. I thought your 5th unit would aim down and kill me but I decided to hope for the best and it didn't work out.

Every time I went for the simple answer, Omegadragon had it covered. Every time I went for the unorthodox option, Omegadragon had it covered.

Omegadragon is a wizard is what I'm getting at.

Najaf won one match, and is guaranteed to win the other as well.

Nicely done, you definitely deserve to get to the next round with some of those amazing plays and counters you did.

Thanks Toma. Wish this second match was going to end on a more exciting note. Unfortunately, and I'm sure you would agree, ultra defense on my part is the best strategy at this point in the match for me.

I still look forward to hearing your commentary and I will do a post match walkthrough myself. That double grenade kill really sunk the first match for you. Could have gone so many ways. Really enjoying the tournament so far and hope you provide commentaries as we move through to the finals.

Good games for sure.

Had a good start on the first round and got the upper hand. Got sloppy and reckless the last turn and could have lost both my soldiers, which I noticed right after I committed my turn, but got a bit lucky there.

Second round was insanely tense, was going for a draw but managed to win in the end.
Funny thing about that bug after round 1, it suddenly reverted back to the original outcome after ImmoralWombat primed his turn for the second round.
When I checked in on the game a second time, before ImmoralWombat made his turn, it showed me killing the red grenadier and then standing still for a moment.
I basically had two soldiers running at the red machinegunner for free kills in the second turn.

Thanks for the games.

Next matches:

-----------------------------

OmegaDragon
Dunderhassan

The_Super_Inframan
Vlad

--------------------------------

Accent
Jazzerman

CosmicSchwung
Najaf

--------------------------------

Same rules as round of 16. Current match ups arent randomized anymore, so next round is accent/jazzerman vs cosmic/najaf.

Please feel free to start the next matches as soon as you are done, but the current round shouldnt be longer than 1 week.

Also remember that all 8 players win something from the tournament, so stick around until the end, rank 5-8 will get random pickings from the prize pile.

Wow that was intense. Nice little chase at the end. But how did the green grenadier survive that final explosion? Do grenades not harm whoever threw it or am I missing something? Did the cover block the explosion?

yup, the wall blocks the explosion. and yup, that was a pretty intense match, haha

@Jazzerman: I'll launch the two matches right now; the faster they're done the better, as I'll soon be unavailable for some time, so I'm hoping to get to the end of this tournament before we get to that point... Good luck!! ^_^
