A bunch of my co-workers are seeing the movie tonight (I couldn't go because I work late), and they're all varying degrees of comic movie fans, so I'm excited but worried to hear their opinions tomorrow.

My hope is that (spoilers from ending)
Superman's inevitable return in Justice League will be a rebirth for the character and they'll move away from Goyer's dour take. Superman is the worst part of the movie.
But what really is going to happen is that
Darkseid takes Superman's body while he's recovering in his coma, and brain-washes home, so the first movie will have Batman and WW unite the others to fight and free Superman.
Maybe. Probably.

I can't express how much I think the critics were wrong on this movie I loved it.

It was like a live-action DC animated movie or a good couple three episodes of Justice League.

I even actually cared about Superman in the movie.

8.5/10 for me

I was the exact same way. I'll like to think I have good tastes in movies, but now I question my taste since the reviews are so low for this film, but I loved it.

It really did feel like a DCA movie... they only ever do things this ballsy in the Animated Universe where they can do standalone shots... I really enjoyed it.

The more I think about it, the more I enjoy this batman
surprised so many ppl have problems with this depiction
<-- not actually spoilers I guess

I found the set-up for the Justice League hilariously laughable. It was literally just a montage of trailers inelegantly shoved in there. The film has its good moments, but the JL stuff felt like a literal last-minute addition, and I absolutely wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

I didn't mind it. Little showing to wet the appetite.

I just came back with my brother. We both thought the movie was trash. I wasn't a fan of Man of Steel but Man of Steel is way better than this.

This is not a movie. This is a complete mess. I legitimately feel sorry for the DC fanboys defending this saying it is a good movie. They deserve better but since this is all they have they have to defend it.

Your concern is noted and appreciated.

That's a really good way of putting it.

I'll go see the movie tomorrow (for free, thanks Verizon!), but until then, here's Ko Takeuchi's (Rhythm Heaven) art for the movie:

You're almost too kind

Interview with Snyder about the "ultimate cut"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Fsw42prfp8

- Deeper Dive
- Story lines fleshed out
- More Character beats
- Little bit more action (Warehouse, Doomsday)
- Extra beats from entire film, not one particular section
- Cuts made very recently
- He's unfortunately not James Cameron and can't just make a 3 hour movie for theater (lol)
- Theatrical cut is "workable" version
- Is his Director's Cut

Definitely seems like another Watchmen situation. Theatrical edit is just to fit within runtime guidelines, and the home video is the true cut.

Looking forward to seeing the full cut. Watchman and Sucker Punch were both greatly improved in his director's cuts.

I thoroughly enjoyed it! Although yeah, Batman's nightmare thing was definitely out of place. Surprised about the parsing of action scenes. Batman solo fight was amazing. But Trinity fight should've been longer. Acting was great all around and Gal Gadot's thick accent didn't bother me at all as I initially feared. I thought it would be another CG hell like the Avengers 1 and 2, but it only turned slightly messy towards the end. Great stuff.

I only hope Director's Cut actually has screen-cappable shirtless moments of Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck. We were robbed of clear views!

Opinions, how do they work?

I wonder why it'll be rated R? I can't wait to see that cut, the theatrical version was already really good, the Director's cut will probably be fantastic.

I'm excited to see that

Saw it last night and gave my thoughts via the review thread so i'll just quote what I wrote there, albeit with one minor edit:
This is a bad film and an even worse superhero flick, to the point where I got the grim feeling that the people making BvS hate these characters and want you to hate them too. Well mission accomplished. Cavill's take on the Superman character is even worse than he was during Meh of Steel and while Gal Gadot is fine as Wonder Woman, her appearance in this film feels like it was on some committee checklist because they need to haphazardly establish the DCCU in as rushed and as messily a manner as possible.

While I fully believe Ben Affleck could make a great Batman, this version of Batman is
the definitive take on Crazy Steve Batman from ASBAR because he murders and tortures people (at one point someone is set on fire thanks to his actions and is presumably killed), thinks he's always right in his conclusion while being a completely reckless and xenophobic gun-toting lunatic. Heck, there was a scene where Perry White refers to him as the "goddamn Batman". I bet if Robin *was* alive in this universe, he would make derogatory remarks to him before feeding him rats in the Batcave. Also, what the hell was up with the bats lifting up Bruce as a kid? That is not how physics work, no matter how good you try to make it look!
Don't get me started on Jessie Eisenberg's character, who was the most insufferable scene-chewing thing to appear in any modern superhero film. I say character because they sure as heck weren't Lex Luthor!
Maybe that piss is just his father's: He did say he left everything in his father's room the same place as it was before so...

The film is essentially a 2 & 1/2 hour long advertisement for what a morose mess the DCCU will be in the coming years, with cameos thrown in that slow down this repugnant bile to a crawl when it isn't being incredibly obnoxious. It's poorly edited, badly written trash. To explain why it's so wretched, i've come up with a list of comic book/comic book-related things you could better spend your time with than watching this movie:
-Read Batman Hush: A great story that, among its other accomplishments, has a believable fight between Batman and Superman while showing their unique relationship.
-Watch Deadpool: Funny, crude and full of heart, something Batman V. Superman completely lacks. Speaking of...
-Read Ms. Marvel: Admittedly the last main storyline (the one about Kamala's identity being used to support a real estate takeover of her neighbourhood brought about via
Hydra
) felt like it rushed towards the finale and could have used more time to fully flesh out its tale, it's the small moments of each individual issue that make up for any shortcomings in the pacing and conclusion of the overall story. There are very few tiny details to appreciate about this film outside of minor aesthetic details and the ending will leave you shouting out "NO! You did not earn that ending movie, shame!". I sincerely doubt the R-rated director's cut will make any of this any more enjoyable or inspiring than a young woman punching people with expanding fists while dealing with balancing out their personal life and superhero duties. Also the latest issue was pretty great.
-Check out Ellis' run on Moon Knight: Smart and sharp-looking (Shalvey's artwork is a feast for the eyes, especially in issue 2 & 3), it's a great anthology of sorts that still manages to tell a coherent story over the course of six comics as opposed to the myriad of poorly connected scenes exemplified in this film.
- Pick up any of the DCAU series on DVD and watch them. Any of them. Even the Zeta Project was better than this because at least that series understood Batman as a character, even if it was future Batman
-Apologize to the small children no doubt crying by the scary imagery as an icon of hope that aspires humanity to be better is wailed on/cut up by a CGi monster and a psychopath in a cape. They need someone to make them feel better because this film is so thoroughly nasty and unpleasant to sit through.
-Watch Iron Giant: Because a robot designed to destroy humanity with advanced alien weaponry in a time full of paranoia with its Cold War setting and ends with the launch of a nuclear missile is more uplifting, more heartfelt and more inspiring than a film about Superman.
Short version: Batman v Superman only avoids being as bad as Fant4stic as a pretentiously stupid film that thinks it's smarter than it actually is by virtue of some well-shot scenes and for not being
as
boring. You have to aspire to make a film this bad. Much like Lex Luthor's piss, Batman V Superman blew up any good will the DCCU garnered up to this point.

Haha, okay. Opinions and all but I don't see people defending it. Most have given it a 7/8 out of 10, and noted that the reviewers are completely wrong in terms of it being absolute trash.

Its a comic book movie, I just don't understand what people expected from it.

Saying this in 2016 is silly. We've had plenty of well made comic book movies

This is exactly how I described it too! I didn't watch any trailers (which I think is where I differ from the vast majority of people who built expectations, I'm sure) and kept thinking, "This feels just like a DC animated movie." I really enjoyed it lol, although that's not to say I didn't have some issues with it, but I do believe people are blowing this up.

Now we're talking!

Also, Synder
can fuck off with that dreams shit, or dreams within dreams nonsense. This is not fucking sucker punch.
Well, if they use the
dreams
as some kind of
time travel
thing in the Justice League movie, i'm fine with that

But if the
dreams are just dreams
, then Yeah, it was dumb

Idk for this specific sequence I thought they made it pretty clear it was a dream. My mind isn't as fresh but I thought he woke up directly after or something

Yeah, Bruce literally talks about it being a dream while he's ascending into the light. I'm not sure how people missed it.

There was some shit I liked, there was a lot of shit that I thought was shit and there was a portion of that shit that I thought was fucking shit. Pull that motherfucker Snyder the fuck away from these things. I don't care if he sues, cries or whatever. Get. Him. The. Fuck. Away. From. This fucking franchise. His tone is heavy handed and too fucking morose to be fucking enjoyable. I liked the soundtrack, Alfred, Bat fleck and Wonder Woman. That's fucking it. Alex Luthor pulled some Black Zetsu shit and he's fucking weird as fuck. It was like some fucking Clockwork Orange torture chair shit. A superhero movie should not have the same weight and tone as David Cronenberg's The Fly.

Saw it last night and gave my thoughts via the review thread so i'll just quote what I wrote there, albeit with one minor edit:
You complain about the
bat-lift of young Bruce without realizing that it was a dream sequence even after adult Bruce immediately refers to it is as such
...

In any case, I just returned from seeing it. Entirely too grim, the absolute worst Lex imaginable and likely one of the worst antagonists a modern comic film has seen to date, an amazing Batman and a surprisingly wonderful Wonder Woman, amazing score, too much Justice League shoehorning and an extremely charming Cavill forced to portray a Superman devoid of any charm whatesoever. My audience clapped and cheered when WW made her debut, and there were a few laughs here and there. I returned five times to see Man of Steel in theaters, but I won't be going back for BvS. It isn't nearly as bad as the RT thread made me think it would be, but it is... utterly disappointing in a way that's a little emotionally draining for a DC fan. It's a shack of What Is built next door to a skyscraper of What Could Have Been.

It's going to take a few viewings of Zootopia to get my spirits back up.

Cross post from DCCU thread:

Just got out. Really really liked it and bordering on love. Went with my wife who isn't in to DC, daughter and son who are, and my 61 year old mom and 67 year old step dad who know nothing about comics. We were all in agreement that it was really good. My 10 year old followed it fine with no confusion. None of us got bored and when I told them after the movie that it is a common complaint among many they all laughed.

This might be the moment in my life that triggers me to stop listening to critics all together. Reading the horrible reviews and then watching it I can echo a statement that has been thrown around here that I feel they watched a different movie. All the cast acted their ass off I thought.

-Affleck is easily my favorite Batman
-Irons is easily my favorite Alfred
-I thought Cavill did a much better job than MoS
-Wonder Woman was pure awesome
-Lex was really good and I understood his motivations.
-Supporting cast was solid
-Fights were spectacular

It was a little slow in the beginning but it was leading somewhere and I was never lost. Yes, they jumped around but who cares? Most of it was relevant. Maybe a few scenes that had nothing to do with the immediate plot but they still had meaning. The complaints about the universe building are ridiculous. I barely noticed it at all. I could have taken more. I feel like the universe building complaint will become the destruction complaint of MoS. Both are baseless IMO

8.75/10. Seeing it again tomorrow.

Dammit, I'm so on the fence about seeing this tonight. I want to love it, but everything I'm hearing just makes me so bummed out. Like, I'm going to see it eventually and make my own mind up, but I feel like going right now is just going to be depressing. I just want a Superman movie I don't feel guilty defending.

I just got back from watching it. I thought Man of Steel was mediocre but Batman vs Superman was decent.

I really, really liked that scene where
Bruce thinks Clark is mentioning his mother, but in fact, he is referring to his own mother

Saw this in IMAX laser! One of only two cinemas in the UK to use the laser variation, 4k quality video so the clarity and picture was REALLY good.

Overall I enjoyed the movie, some pacing issues and bits thrown together without making much sense.

Affleck was good but I need to see more to determine if he is the best ever.

Cavill is boring imo, his character seems to have no charisma or charm.

Gal Gadot was awesome and looked better than I expected.

Eisenberg was annoying, could have easily made a Riddler or something.

7/10

Saw it earlier today. Thought it was pretty good, despite some clear flaws. The solo batman fight was amazing Thought Batfleck, Alfred, Wonder Women, and Superman all worked very well. I was even pleasantly surprised by Lex.

Might write something more in depth later.

Regarding the other JL member cameos.
Flash,
looked silly. But not enough of him to have an opinion. i honestly have no idea what he was wearing, and the gas station scene was whatever
Aquaman,
looked bad ass, but his scene was pretty disappointing.
Cyborg,
most interesting cameo out of all of them imo. I'm actually excited for a cyborg movie more than I thought I would be.
Wonder Woman,
stole the show. Gal Gatdamn. That fight intro music. Same with cyborg, looking forward to her movie.
Green Lantern,
where were you? I only saw reference to his love interest.

I loved that too. And it kinda blew my mind because I never thought of it. I know many critics shat all over the scene, and to be fair it was handled poorly due to the pacing, but I thought it was such a strong clever idea.

Also I find it funny that people's reaction to Eisenberg's Lex is one of two extremes: It's either "Best Lex EVA!" or "Gross, yuck it's like a "mixture between facebook and da Joker." I'm one of the few in the middle. It's funny because Eisenberg is literally my most hated actor out there. I find him extremely pretentious and I usually hate all the roles he's in. But when they hired him, I knew the Lex they were going for was closer to Gene Hackman's Lex rather than the Lex from the animated series/comics. And for the most part I was right but it was also a mixture of classic comic Lex. While I think Lex carried a lot of the movie in the beginning, in the last act it just became very campy and over the top. Though But I don't blame that on Eisenberg, I put that more on the Snyder.

I really enjoyed it.
After the RT thread I was expecting not to, but it's up there with any other superhero movie for me.
Had to watch in 3D though and my eyes hurt a bit by the end.

Batman was great, looking forward to seeing more of Wonder Woman in her own film.
Superman is lacking in any kind of charisma though.
Lex was ok but not a good Lex.

Suicide Squad looks like it might be fun too.

...aren't the identification OF the cameos kind of spoilery? :P

lol, barely noticed it?! The movie stops everything, twice, to do nothing but show you Justice League stuff.

It's not baseless. Maybe you have no problem with it, but it's not an issue that people invented out of thin air. It's something that exists in the movie and, for many, was poorly executed.

Hi. What about us Image fanboys who liked it?

I mean sure, it'd ruin your narrative if it was just DC fans pretending that they think it's good. But it's not. So cut the condescension out please.
