PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

All of them Xbox One games ported to PC, of course they run well on the console. Stupid comparison. What you should be looking at is games made for the New 3DS and cross-gen titles.

I don't see how people are still struggling to understand this concern.

I am glad this is finally confirmed (well, semi-confirmed, I guess).

Changes nothing for me and my plans, I'll still use my launch PS4 as I have no intention to upgrade just for graphics.
The games will be playable on my PS4, graphical sacrifices I don't mind, if I managed to enjoy games in 576p and 720p, it's not going to kill me if my current games look worse than 4K.
I mean, I play games right now that look much better on PC, and I couldn't care less if they do. So I really won't care if somebody plays a better looking game - they paid $500 for that, good for them.

And a 4K TV is not in any of my plans any time soon. Once they are €250 like TVs are now, then OK. Until then, who cares, my 40" crappy Grundig is perfectly fine.

As I stated before, unless my PS4 dies, my next console is due around 2021/22 (probably a PS 5.5 by then).

I'm all for it. I now buy most multi-platform games for my PC because of the large disparity in graphics, even though I prefer console gaming. Although I would probably buy the PS4k near launch, I know many people who wouldn't care or be happy about the reduced price of the original PS4. If this is anything like the iphone market, only a small percentage of consumers would feel compelled to upgrade until their old PS4 stops working.

there are 35 million reasons why this wont happen. unless PS4K sell 35 million straight out of the gate..

If this argument held water, we would not see games targeting higher spec / lower number machines, and we do. There are far more PS360's out there than PS4/XBO's, and yet why did Activision - who very much love money - target the newer specs anyway?

Devs will push to utilise the resources available to them, and with consoles, that means targeting the highest spec they can, and gutting the rest for the secondary platforms.

I don't think handheld users are under illusions that they have "top-tier" hardware and graphic fidelity.

Considering the key selling point of PS4 is that it has the "best tech" in consoles, telling the existing userbase that "lol you don't have the best tech anymore unless you pay $400-$500 more" is a kick in the nuts for folks that are invested into their platforms financially and emotionally.

Except for the fact that the N3DS have games that the regular 3DS does not. I highly doubt that the PS4K will get games that the PS4 won´t get.

Sony this is nuts.

Jesus. You were winning the gen.

I'm 33. I'm out of new console video gaming if this is true. No hyperbole. No long post here kicking. I'm just out.

I've had a Console every gen since the Megadrive. I've loved it. Im just done.
This is a good move from Sony.

PS4 running games at 30fps or medium settings.
PS4k running games at 60fps or high settings.

You choose what you want.

Perfect.

Double the PS4's GPU ain't giving you native 4K gaming. If you think big budget titles are going to run at 4K natively, you're nuts.

Double the PS4's GPU probably isn't even enough to increase both fidelity and give you a smooth 60fps. Why would they call such a modest performance increase the PS5?

Calm down people. Your PS4 experience will remain exactly the same as it is now, 1080p and barely 30fps.

Now go enjoy the $792.00 Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge you just got, which replaced the S6 you bought last year.

The tantrums are entertaining, they take me back to the 2nd grade.

The Clock speed is increased here! So it's not it.

Well I'm not saying it is actually "it" but it does show an exact 2X specs Polaris GPU that would fit very nicely.

WCCFTECH say it could be an engineering sample that is just running slower in testing. The consumer version set to run at ~1150Mhz.

Hmm, wondering if I should sell my PS4 now and get ahead of these rumors for max profit or hope that there's going to be some sort of subsidization upgrade path through Gamespot/Sony.

with all respect to the OP since I don't know him. Regardless I hope this is true. I really cant wait for new generation of consoles including the NX

I think deepdown is still alive is bigger news.

Might be day 1 for me if true, just depends how big a leap it is compare to the old ps4.

But i'm still using the S4 >.>

I wonder if the people who are ok with the split performance from a competitive perspective would be okay with devs patching in native KB/M controls on console FPS games.

Because someone playing a game at 4K has 4x the information per pixel that the person playing the game at 1080p would have, giving them a significant advantage when sniping, peeking round corners, etc.

Honestly I don't know how I feel about this. I don't think I'm going to buy this thing and I'm worried about the performance of PS4 games made to take advantage of the PS4K. If they're solid and just look worse, that's fine, but I'm going to be pissed if they start slacking on actual performance (ie inconsistent or sub 30fps framerates).

the near future!

ARROGANT SONY BACK ON TOP!!!!

YAAAS

WHEN will MicroTrash? NEVVVVEEER!

It's super funny that Sony went from the "10 year" lifespan plan for the PS3 to the "make it irrelevant as quickly as possible" plan for the PS4.

By the time it comes out it won't run on PS4, run badly on PS4K and run at 30fps at lower settings than the PC version on PS8K.

You guys are being really sour about this. PC gaming revolves around upgrades, and Apple and Nintendo have both been doing this as well. One of the major problems with console gaming is how quickly consoles fall behind PCs, and this generation in particular has been underpowered from the getgo.

it also sounds like something made explicitly with the ps VR headset in mind..i imagine a lot of VR games will be made with the specs of this version in mind.

If they want to achieve 4k with a GPU similar to 280x, then they'll have to make pretty big sacrifices. 1440p, sure, but 4k is still too much. Especially with 5GB RAM.

4k blu-ray player makes it pretty much a must buy for me.

Since 4k blu-ray players are still like 500$ + a PS4 with more power, makes it a pretty good financial proposition at 399$ for me.

Does anyone else see this as just sort of being PS5 with backward compatibility to PS4? I feel like Sony has yet to fully deliver on the promise of great 1st party games for the PS4 to the same degree they delivered on PS3, and now this new thing is going to come and steal away resources, further dwindling down the 1st party game options for the console I own.

Pls no Sony!
I don't have money for a new console

Prepare to get all MP portions of games on PS4 to be at 60 fps to keep it possible to play with PS4K versions. And in a few years they will look like absolute trash on "early adopter" console. I also can see Uncharted 4 60fps patch with a fancy trailer and colorful slogans "the way its meant to be played" all over youtube.

It's E3 2016 at the start of the Sony press conference. The lights go down. The name PS4k fades into the foreground. The deep down logo is shown. The music starts to swell. PS4k Deep Down Reveal Theme

A dragon enters the scene faced off against a knight. 4k 60fps real time gameplay is shown with the dragon's fire hitting the knight's shield. The crowd cheers loudly! Sony stock rises immediately. Shu announce that the console is in stores now. Bees are released into the audience. There is panic, but also extreme happiness. The room is cleared and the next generation has begun.

Let me help you: those who really care for spec bumps and are willing to buy every console Sony releases from now on are going to spend as much as PC enthusiasts.

Do the math:
You have bought PS4 in 2014 400$
You are buying PS4K in 2016 400$
You are buying PS 5 in 2018 400$

How about:
You have bought PS4 in 2013 400$
You are buying PS4K in 2017 400$
You are buying PS 5 in 2021 400$

I want more power in my consoles, so I'd be happy with a 4 year upgrade cycle and 1 generation of forward compatibility.

Well as good as Sony has been doing they were due for a giant stumble. Here we are.

Yup, this is a stupid move and stinks of the same arrogance that has screwed Sony in the past. Sky high price point, existing games receive no performance benefit unless patched in by developers, new games will be made targeting the PS4K specs and the older PS4 will play said games at severely reduced performance.

On top of all that, no trade in program? Yeah, if this is the path consoles are taking I'm simply going to save up for a replacement to my GTX 960 and avoid getting burned.

I really hope none of this is legit.

Eh, I'm ok with this. Why would a group of people who are ok with spending $400 (or more) on upgrading their cell phones every couple of years be bent out of shape on upgrading their gaming hobby box of choice for the same price at the same interval?

It's not like PS4 games are suddenly going to get worse by the appearance of a PS4K. Everything that's good about the PS4 will remain just as good, only now their will be a stronger hardware version for certain games that take advantage of it.

Hopefully Sony will have better support the PS4K than Nintendo has had for the New 3DS!
You can't really compare the two. A phone is still a phone and the cost is often offset by the lower cost in software or mobile phone plan available through a provider.

I feel like I got screwed. IF there is some sort of trade in. I'm good. I'll pay $300 and trade in my old PS4 for a ($500) new system. I just bought my second ps4 in mid Jan. Sony is going to use up A LOT of the consumer good will if there is no sort of trade in.

I will probably just say F it, sell both my ps4's and put that toward a new PC.

Its especially astounding considering how successful Ps4 has been. Why mess with a good thing? Leave it the hell alone. Wait for Ps5 to do true 4k. Right now a GPU twice as powerful is still nowhere near enough for 4k gaming. So all it will do is give people a better framerate at 1080p and piss off everyone who already bought a Ps4.

Or, make a rule that any game that runs at 1080p60 on Ps4.5 has to run at 900p60 on OG Ps4. That would minimize the damage to me.

I actually think this is exactly the reason. I mean, not the only reason as you can definitely expect incremental upgrades to seep into the console space after seeing Nintendo do it for years with handhelds and Apple having huge success with the iPhone slightly better than last years version. But I think because the PS4 is/was selling so well and there is that goodwill and fanbase built up they decided to try and cash in with the idea of "Well, people love the PS4, they will lover the PS4K! It's better in every way and games going forward will work better on it! Everyone will upgrade! We'll be rich!".

With the PS3 they were behind in sales and 3rd party devs were having trouble with the cell and they couldn't afford to upgrade or change things so they came up with the "10 year lifespan plan" to assure people that if they buy the system it'll last them a long time and they don't have to worry about their PS3 not being worth it.

But you will be forced to now. Maybe not every year but faster than what most pc gamers are used to. Usually you would wait for the entire console generation to upgrade our pc but now with .5 consoles coming out faster pc gamers are going to have to keep up with it. They will need to upgrade or risk losing bragging right to graphics on consoles now they are not restricted to long generation time of 7+ years now to 3 years.

The hell? How us that forcing you to upgrade? If someone is making purchasing decisions based on bragging rights I don't know what to tell them.

But sacrifices are already being made. Look at games like Witcher and the Division running on PC and then compare to PS4/XB1.
But look at games like Uncharted or Horizon: Zero Dawn. If those games are the best-looking games on "vanilla" PS4, that would really suck to not have the hardware get pushed like pretty much every console has been.

The philosophy of throwing hardware at the problem is for PC. Nothing wrong with that philosophy, but it's directly opposed to what a console has been for the last 30 years. If they want to throw hardware at the problem on consoles too, I may just switch over to PC and let PS4 be my last console (depending on what Nintendo does).

I used to play a ton of PC gaming but switched over to handhelds/consoles around 2008 because I appreciated the ease-of-use and the lack of hardware headaches (not saying every PC is like that, but it was my own situation).

Since handhelds have mostly died out, I've been leaning on the PS4 for that ease-of-use, and it's a fantastic system for that. However, if they're just going to dilute their own market by throwing hardware iterations at me, I'm probably going to just re-learn the nuances of PC (it has been a few years) and make that my home.
