PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

This thread... Jesus people, get your shit together.

Its an upgraded PS4, it will make future PS4 games look prettier and run smoother. If you don't want it, stick with the current model. No one is putting a gun to your head.

They haven't even announced the thing yet.
Hear hear. This sounds pretty damn good if you ask me. I'm trying to think of any negatives here and I just can't seem to find any *shrug*

Good thing i didn't buy the ps4 yet then, this is more attractive. Q1 2017 is also a good window, and the PS5 looks very distant now.

why? another PS4 that makes PS4 games more pretty isn't going to mess up NX chances. If anything is going to do that it will be Nintendo.
I'd actually say that the NX chances are looking better now, especially in terms of having a decent hardware. Previously we didn't know there was all this margin for a 399€ console, so a 250-299 NX console was bound to be even weaker than the xbone. While that can still happen of course, there are bigger chances that if sony can do a 3.5tflops ps4 with a 4k br, Nintendo can make a stronger console than ps4 (like 2-2.5tflops) at 299.

Despite the impressive specification and efficiency improvements, the GTX 970 is fighting an uphill battle. Its total throughput of 3.49 TFLOPS

http://www.trustedreviews.com/nvidia-geforce-gtx-970-review
Are we STILL comparing nvidia and amd cards based on tflops?

A 970 is comparable to 5.5 tflops amd cards. This thing won't touch it.

"guys don't worry the OGPS4 will still be the priority"

kttcolipachaha

yeah anyone that actually believes this is living in cloud cuckoo land.

Yes I do care about my job and I generally do the firing =) . To clear up a few things though he did not make it sound like all games would be native 4k just that they would be scaled to 4k and we do have a tentative placeholder date for late Q1 next year.

Tried to keep my personal thoughts out of this thread but I really believe this move is all about the PSVR trying to look a bit better when compared to its direct competition.

They aren't.

Siris did you hear anything about a hardware based Temporal Reprojection chip or a hardware based temporal HRAA calculator?

If anything, the early adopters should be the happiest about this. They've had their PS4s for over 2 years, and by the time the PS4K releases it will be 3 years old, or more. I'd be much more pissed if I waited to buy one now only to find out that another, more powerful, iteration is releasing soon...

Unless you meant you haven't bought one yet and this news means you're gonna wait even longer for the PS4k? :P

Thanks for telling me how to feel about this....not.
This gen for me is pretty underwhelming so far, not because of PS4'S specs but because
it's just open world drawing by numbers, MP heavy/only games and lots of walking sims, delays and shitty optimization at release. Nothing exciting that really justifies my day one purchase. I'll take it like a man "yeah, it was my own fault to jump in early". Not going to happen again and let's see how this will work for Sony when many others do the same thing.

They can throw 5 consoles with 10x the power at me and this won't change. I went back to PC just recently because I reignited my love for strategy and sim-games. Don't care for collectathons at 4K.

Late Q1 next year? What the "#¤%? Are they just giving up on this holiday season? Who would buy a OG PS4 if a better one is just months away. Makes zero sense..

Also thought this as well. It is bizarre to say the least.

If this is true, we'll see a major pricecut this holiday, I would assume.

I just hope this doesn't mean PS4 owners get shat all over.

Sony will start showing off games on the 4K, and then we won't know how they play on the PS4. I'm willing to bet original owners will get screwed quite a bit moving forward.

OP usually is the one firing people, and he told us the release time frame.

I don't know man, if you are not a faker, you won't survive this for long. Don't put yourself at risk with this, please.

2x GPU as PS4? I call BS. That's quite a limiting factor now (that is the current PS4).

Also 2x GPU of PS4, likely won't get you any good 4k gaming lol

If this is true, you better call it PS5.

I can't imagine the awesomeness of seeing something like a Red Dead Redemption 2 running on this hardware at E3. Bring it in Sony, bring it home.

Yeah. Some devs will patch to 4K, or bump to 60FPS and call it a day of course.

But the ones that take advantage of it, damn. It's a mini PS5 feeling.

How is this even Remotely like DRM? Sony isn't coming into your home and setting your original PS4 on fire. This is Sony taking a risk and releasing an iterative machine in an era where people are comfortable speding 700 dollars on GPUs alone (that sell out in minutes and in the millions of units).

I get personal attachment to hardware, but I'm not going to wax lyrical that a piece of plastic should receive all the attention of a developer house even if the company has the resources and ambition to do otherwise.

It's the principle of buying their console and buying into what they showed as being the only version to be supported for the generation.
In little over 2-3 years we are getting a refresh that already spec wise makes what we bought obsolete. When PS2 had the slim design it didnt make the phat PS2's obsolete spec wise.
Same with PS3 slim. It played the same games, maybe some stuff was taken out to make it cheaper, but seeing how it increased sales, I don't see that being a huge negative.
This makes people think that their PS4 is not th PS4 Sony planned for the entire generation. It shows a lack in product support and vision.

Basically because they overshot on PSVR and some other things the consumer's have to pay for their mistakes. And it may not be now or maybe a year from now, but mark my words one game will run like butter on PS4K and run like ass on PS4.

"And that's how it starts, the fever, the rage, that drives good men......CRUEL"

I'm surprised you haven't figured out yet that this will be Sony's UHD player. It just happens to play games and PSVR as well. There is the real Trojan Horse for the living room. How many people use the PS4 as a Blu-Ray player? Or a PS-3? BTW, $399 for a PS4K would be a downright steal, and $499 isn't bad. The Samsung entry level player is $399 today, and doesn't even play games...

I'm in Day One simply because I will need a UHD player to go with my 4K TV in the next year or so. Excellent news for me and many others out there. I'd expect to hear something similar regarding the Next Xbox, but I doubt it has a UHD player in it.

That a really good post Abdiel

I don't think people have any idea how market realities will embrace these kinds of products, despite how we've seen these things change.

A newer, higher end ps4 lowering the cost of entry for the base model will only create new access for different consumers. This community is very niche and insular and very reactionary to things, tends to hype itself both negatively and positively.

If all this info is true, it means we'll have a new paradigm for consoles, and we'll babe to see how it affects then going forward, but it's also the first time we'd have the exact same architecture being shared between these models for mass development.

I'd rather wait and let Sony demonstrate what they're going to do and how they'll pull it off, and what that will mean going forward.

Instead of, you know, losing my Damn mind and exploding with preposterous statements.

Fuck Sony, screw PSVR. This gen has barely started we haven't even got that big of a exclusive diversity yet and already this. Fuck you Sony.

Amen brother. PS4 is barely starting to hit its stride and now we're getting a new console? They better have a good trade in program to upgrade because this is some bullshit.

Some how Sony seems to be managing to squander their huge console lead, and main benefit of their VR platform having an established base. Now everyone is going to start comparing the $500 (bundle) + 399 or $499 (new console) vs the Vive and Oculus pricing. Suddenly the gap is getting much smaller between the prices.

The gap was a lot bigger when the original PS4 was the VR target, if this new console is the "actual vr target" that is no longer the case.

As we've seen with the PS3, it doesn't matter what your install base is, it's the active base which most likely will move to the PS4K

Please share you survey data on the active base and their wishes regarding the PS4K (with a precise description of what it is and what it will change for them.

What differences will the PS4k offer for PS:VR over the normal PS4 in way of graphics?

If PS4k is going to offer a better PS:VR experience, then I may as well cancel my PS:VR order now.
Thats what im saying $500 I'll be paying to get into psvr...that's not happening if they release this as well

Oh god just realized Uncharted 4K is possible....SHIT!!

I dont want to wait like another year to play it! but if I can play that ish at 4K/60FP Single Player goodness? AYYYYYY gimmeee!!!!!!

They aren't.

so this is at least a year out from launch. your looking something closer to a 3.5 year gap, possibly more, between PS4 and PS4K.

Fuck Sony, screw PSVR. This gen has barely started we haven't even got that big of a exclusive diversity yet and already this. Fuck you Sony.

lol. we're just over 3 years since the PS4 was an nounced, like 2 1/2 since it was released. Nothing would change for you if you gamed on a Ps4 already. calm yourself

2x the PS4 GPU is about a GTX 970 level, right? 4K gaming on a 970 is unacceptable imo, but perhaps with optimization it would run better?

No, AMD and NVIDIA FLOPS aren't directly comparable in terms of performance. In current graphics cards, this would be closer to a R9 380 or GTX 960.

I don´t really get the concern about "cross-gen" between the PS4 & PS4K.

It´s GPU is about twice as powerful. That´s gonna get you higher settings, better shadows, a bit more draw distance etc or a mixture of those things.

This isn´t like the PS3/PS4 situation at all. That was a powergap by the factor of 10 or something like that were if you wanted the game to run on both, it was either an upgraded version of the PS3 game (which would be the higher settings example in the beginning of the post) or a PS4 game and an almost different PS3 game, because of the huge power gap simply not being able to run the "same" game. Which even if devs focused on the 4K version, it would be quite simple to run the game on the regular PS4. PCs, been doing it for decades. And this are exactly 2 different skus. Not a million.

You´re gonna get PS4 games with better settings here. They´re not gonna abandon the PS4 for the 4K. There are what, 40 million? of those out there. It will be just fine.

This is also what I am thinking. Sony knows they have momentum and market share, and would not try to upset this. Every new game after the PS4K releases will say something along the lines of "Enhanced on PS4K". Boom. 4K users get better performance and PS4 users get the same experience they normally would.

Too much sense man.

Late Q1 next year? What the "#¤%? Are they just giving up on this holiday season? Who would buy a OG PS4 if a better one is just months away. Makes zero sense..

Sure it does. The people who have yet to buy a PS4 are the same people who won't give a shit about the PS4K. Therefore, Sony drops the price of the base unit this holiday and sells it to that crowd, while the hardcore market that would but the PS4K whenever it launched feels less burned because it will be over 3 years since the system launched.

Doesn't bother me long as games come optimized.

I still got a lot of gaming I'm looking forward to on my PS4 before I upgrade... (Division, FFXV, Uncharted, Persona 5, etc...)

If this is true I'm going to hold off on PSVR though because I'd want the upgraded console first. By then there'd be more VR software too.

I'm inclined to agree, but let's keep in mind that Sony is trying to also push their PSVR this year. Why would anyone choose to buy the PSVR if they know that in order to get the best experience possible, they need to upgrade to the PS4K?

I have a headset on pre-order, but I pre-ordered with the assumption that this would give me a great VR experience on the PS4. I'd be inclined to cancel that pre-order, if this accessory was originally designed with for a PS4K, but isn't being publicly marketed that way in order to increase sales.

I'm not going to spend $500 on an VR Headset, or any peripheral if I cannot use it to it's full potential.

People in your situation as bolded are in a real tough spot and I feel for you. I never believed the PS4 would be able to drive good VR content so I held off. It does feel like this is Sony's admission that people with my opinion were right. And yes, if I were you, I'd consider cancelling that preorder until we find out what the differences will be with PSVR on the OG or 4k consoles.

So yeah, I sympathise with people in your position but I just think the PS4 was never going to do VR justice. The Oculus and Vive would have forced Sony's hand eventually, especially if the Oculus runs on the new Xbox. So their hand was forced.

In your universe the +30/40 millions users of "OG" PS4 are less important for the developers than the few millions that'll have a "PS4K". Not very likely, you could argue just the opposite.[/QUOTE]

Likely 50+ but yeah i see your point

It sounds like a good deal to me.

Probably won't bother if Yakuza, Persona and The Last Guardian aren't affected by the upgrade.

My brother can get a refund from Argos whenever he wants so he is set if he wants to upgrade.

Wow, busy day in terms of news. :o

I'm still shocked at people thinking PS4 users will be pissed off. I love the news about the new hardware even though I won't buy one as of yet, and I own a launch PS4 from 2013.

I don't own a 4K TV, neither have the $400,00 to spend on a PS4 again, so I will be playing on the 'inferior' machine, and i'm not bothered at all.

If PS4K launches this year I hope DICE are all set to take advantage with BF5.

I fancy playing it on my consoles rather than PC.

I just hope this doesn't mean PS4 owners get shat all over.

developers already show off all their games on fancy PC's ... how will this change at all? they are already down-porting to ps4 , they just won't have to "down" quite as far now.

and we still have digital foundry

It needs developers putting in the effort to make something like this work out, and unless they fail cert for not doing a better than good job, this can turn into a nightmare. If this is a thing that won't happen until next year than most games coming out will not take advantage of this.

Yeah I only saw the late Q1 2017 thing now. I suspect Battlefield 5 will still take advantage of it because of how long the service tail on the game is, maybe as a later patch.
