Quantum Break Review Thread

I can't believe how review threads are now. This game is getting great scores and yet here we are quibbling over a handful of indifferent and negative reviews. How far are we prepared to take this? 10/10 or it's not worth it?

Stupid.

BTW I posted what each star means for Giantbomb but nobody cares to read :D

The benefit of using a numerical scale when offering opinions on things is that it's universally understood. If your friend tells you a girl is an 8 you develop a pretty good idea of how they feel about her.

By assinging a unique meaning to each rating that requires further investigation to fully understand you devalue the system as a whole. If your friend tells you a girl is an 8 but his definition of an 8 isn't the same as everyone else's then they might as well just say what they mean and forget the rating as it will only confuse.

numerically scales have never been universally understood hence the review that came with them. since they're subjective, the review classified what a 8 was to them and that 8 may mean a lot more or less to that person than the other.

judging purely off scores is dumb and it's unfortunately what a ton of people do, so i wouldn't complain if it went to a yes/buy or no/don't buy option with a rent throw in as a middle ground.

for example: i think heavy rain is a 8-9/10 and some think it's a 4/10; using my rating as the end all be all is stupid because we may have totally different expectations and levels of acceptance.

What's sad is that consumers place to much reliance on reviews and they can't think for themselves to whether or not a game would interest them based on the masses of gameplay and previews available.

Just reading the text in a review would be a start. And previews are the worst fucking way of weighing up a games merits, ever.

I think I'll go ahead and do the digital thing since I'll get the pc version. My only concern is the tv show stuff. No way in hell am I downloading 70+ gigs of that so I hope the streaming on the Xbone and PC version is smooth. I'll support Remedy since I enjoyed all their previous output and hope the game does well for them.

I have watched a few different review and gameplay vids of this and it does look like pretty average 3rd person shooter fare which has been done a lot already.

20 min cut scenes as well? No thanks.

It seems like they put a cover system and standard features like blind fire, hip fire, grenades and firing while crouched and saw that nobody really needs the time powers to win and can play it like a standard shooter, so they took all of those out and forced players to stand up to be able to shoot and that obviously opens you to enemy fire, so now you have to move around because it's lacking basic character skills.
A good way to do this would be like Max Payne 3, it has a proper cover system and you can try to play it like a cover shooter, but using bullet time is both more effective and fun.

No because if you use cover to long you get rushed.

From what I've seen you can't shoot out of cover in QB. In MP3 you can hold your own for a while and plan your next move. If somebody is rushing towards you blind fire them, and thanks to euphoria even if they don't die they will stumble or fall for a while giving you an opening. If there's anything MP3 nailed it's the combat.

After I got the time dash ability I never even thought of ducking behind a cover because it is completely unnecessary.

For what it's worth to some folks out there. I've completed the game twice, in a row, on normal, then hard. I'm still wanting to go back and play more cause the combat and visuals effects are just a blast to see and play.

I hated Alan Wake, but I gave half the price of QB to a friend that has the xbox one.

He'll give me the PC code.

Hopefully it's at least worth it.

Have they said it works like that? I assumed you'd have to be logged into the gamertag used to make the Xbox one purchase while on PC in order to download/play.

Nice.
Edit: how long did it take you on Normal and Hard?

I've never let any review decide my purchase, but i have purchased the game already,so yeah. I can't deny though that it always makes me happy to see nothing but positive reviews, like you know, Rise of the Tomb Raider got, Bloodborne, Fallout 4 and so on. But the fact remains that plenty of websites do give QB a great rating, sites like Jimquisition, Destructoid, IGN, Game Informer and so on. I definitely put some stock in those site's reviews. But for some reason i definitely expected positive reviews across the board, but i guess not.

I'll see for myself next week, but i have a feeling i'll be enjoying it a lot. It's just somewhat of a shame that the game can be considered short, Gamersyde finished it in 7 hours on normal. Now i was planning on playing on hard from the start, so it will take me longer, but man...i was definitely expecting at least 10 hours on normal. That being said, i hope the game sells well enough, because i really do want to see another Remedy game on Xbox, probably Alan Wake 2.

7 hours with the 88 min cutscenes? Wtf??

No. From GS.

"Now, let us end our review then with a few words about the length of the game. In keeping with the genre, Jack Joyce’s adventure is composed of 5 acts and it took us a little over 7 hours in normal difficulty to complete it. If you add the TV series into the mix and seeing that every act is linked to a TV episode lasting about 25 minutes, you should complete the game after roughly 9 hours. "

Wasn't it repeatedly stated to be 10+ hours last night?

Oh, I see.
Curious to see how long SlasherJPC took to finish, especially the second time given that he's finished it one.

Took me over 10 on first playthrough with lots of exploration and reading, second playthrough with no exploration, reading and no deaths is 8:45, both with every cutscene.

Well I am definitely going for hard difficulty and I always explore around whenever I can. I take my time. I wonder if Gamersyde and and other sites did that as well. Next week I'll find out for myself if it was worth the 41 euros or so, but I definitely think it will be. It's not like the only scores it gets are 6s and 7s,hell there's even 9.5s.
