Batman V Superman’ Takes A Dive With -70% Second Weekend

Let the spin begin

Deadline said:
Its second weekend is slightly better than Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 which fell 72% and made $47.4M. That film became the highest installment in the Potter franchise with a 2.25 multiple off its $169.1M for $381M. That’s the same leg-out factor many are predicting for BvS. However, Warner Bros. can’t escape the fact that what was suppose to be a slam dunk in launching DC features 2.0 as a crowd pleaser, has been poisoned by the division of fans and critics.

Again, the critics vs fans narrative.

I didn't know about Snyder's love for Ayn Rand before this thread, but it more than anything just makes me understand why he makes movies that I hate so much.

I don't think anyone is less suited to make a movie about Superman than an Objectivist.

It's worth mentioning that nowhere has Snyder espoused a particular love for Ayn Rand or objectivism. He just said he liked the Fountainhead for the way in which it argued for the right of the individual to have complete creative freedom, something I think most people would agree with.

The Fountainhead is a book that has many fans, not just people who believe in objectivism as a philosophy. It's not particularly political. It's quite different from Rand's other book, Atlas Shrugged, in that respect.

We are comparing the quality of Batman & Robin to BvS now? I think it goes without question B&R is the more enjoyable movie. It's cheesiness and campiness enjoyable for what it is. A lot easier to rewatch than BvS that is a movie that does not know what it wants to be.

This ranking is perfect. Agree 100%.

I would throw Batman 1966 between arises and B&R however. Forever and BvS being the bottom two in the franchise.

This. I think people just assume he wants to make Fountainhead that he's a fan of stuff like Atlas Shrugged or a Rand follower.

The main character in the Fountainhead is an architect who just wants to be left alone to make his buildings the way he wants to make them. I'm guessing that's what Snyder is drawn to.

Right. He wants creative freedom. What's the problem with that? I never read the book but I'm sure creative types would be drawn to this.

The Fountainhead's protagonist, Howard Roark, is an individualistic young architect who chooses to struggle in obscurity rather than compromise his artistic and personal vision.

You know what Barman film gets the tone of comic Batman better than BvS? Batman 1966. He does actual detective work in it and doesn't kill!

"Be there hero, Clark, or be none of it. You don't owe this world a thing. You never did."

Yea, I can see that line being written by Ayn Rand herself. Though I have to say I don't mind a take on Superman that contrasts his individual rights/powers against his responsibility to the larger world.

Doesn't it show a complete misunderstanding of the character though?

Like Batman killing without second thoughts. I understand the "different interpretations of the characters, in this world etc" argument, but at the end of the day is that a valid argument?

Tomorrow they make a gun wielding Spiderman, or a Punisher whose form of punishment is talking criminals into stand up citizens. Create the context and validate their actions. Can it be done? Sure. Should it be done? Of course not, because it completely misses the point of the characters.

Isn't that the point tho. He's unhinged and by the end he's changed back.

Regarding batman. Heres some character spoilers from batman vs superman:
Even though batman kills, he doesn't kill as a default. there's a whole scene where he beats up bad guys by breaking their guns and beating them up. The thing is, this is a batman who has been doing it for 20 years. He is already feeling like nolans bat felt in the beginning of the dark knight rises, he is old and a little tired of it all. He does kill but it feels like hes just past the point in his carreer where he tries to save everyone. Instead hes just doing what he can to achieve his objective, killing as little as possible, but not going out of his way to avoid it.

Surprised Begins isn't higher rated than the Dark Knight. This opinion is going to get flak but over time I think there isn't a lot between Rises and the Dark Knight. Rises is more obviously daft with the plot in a way that doesn't need much thought to tear it apart but Dark Knight is much the same with a collection of random set pieces and moments that make no sense, there is just a little less stupid and a better villain. I think they are both pretty weak films beyond the spectacle. Begins is my favourite.

Of all the numerous, NUMEROUS things to critique BvS for, this line ain't one of em. It's spot on.

BvS humanity are a bunch of ungrateful dickheads.

I tend to agree. TDK's last act was objectively awful. Everything after the bombings looked and felt like shit. It's too bad because it was basically perfection up to that point.

Begins I thought was consistently solid throughout. Lower highs but also higher lows than TDK.

real shit. and a nice reminder that so much of life is a matter of perspective. in fact that was a large theme of the film and I enjoyed it greatly.

That line, and "if there's a one percent chance, we have to take it as an absolute certainty", should've been the core of the entire film

I have a great fondness for Batman '89 and still think it's a seminal comic book movie, but I do love Begins a lot. Those two are definitely the best imo.

Objective, lol.

Scene with Harvey at the end is fantastic.

But...by and large, they were? Batman's entire purpose for being from the very beginning of the damn film was to address the threat that Superman posed given the possibility of that 1% moment happening. Right?

Clark's relationship and status with the world was on display for the entire fuckin film. Is he a good guy? A bad guy? Is he a god? Is he GOD himself? Does he need to be subject to our laws? Who's side is he on? Meanwhile he's just doing the best he knows how to do, saving people when he can with a focus on the woman he loves first and foremost. Using his day job and time alone to contemplate who exactly he should be to the world if anything given how hard he is sometimes treated. Great care was given to making sure the issue was considered from the perspective of the average human with no powers who doesn't understand what the fuck is happening...and the perspective of the hero himself.

Did you not feel any of that? I felt like they were by far the dominant themes.

Objective, lol.

Scene with Harvey at the end is fantastic.

If only the nonsense with the phones being used as fucking sonar, Sonar Batman vision and that entire boat sequence weren't part of it. Too bad they were, isn't it. It was that jarring kind of awful you'd hope a fan edit would remove and you could forget about completely.

$22M on Saturday is pretty good in this age of lower expecations. As long as the Sunday drop stays below 43% or so, BvS should manage a $50M weekend.

The will probably project $51-52M for the weekend.

Project higher, get some "NOT A RECORD!" headlines. Actuals come in Monday to show it did take the record for biggest superhero drop.

Nice to see more Begins fans. Seems there aren't many of us, tbqh. Film doesn't lack of one-liners either.

"...does it come in black?"
It does egregiously overuse the oh-so-clever "Oh you said a thing earlier, but I'm going to say it back to you in a slightly related context to show you that I've outwitted you!"

Like that is probably among my two key issues with Begins which I otherwise love. The over-explained final act from Batman, Gordon, that random dude at Wayne Tower... and the movie constantly trying to show off how clever it is by repeating lines.

I do remember that but it made the whole movie almost fit together like a puzzle by the end. Somehow it worked for me.

The $22M is probably closer to reality than a projection.. so it's looking good (whilst still being a shitshow) that it will be over $50M.

Didn't you get the memo?

Dark Knight is a contemplative thought piece on the possible necessity of the Patriot Act, it's applications, and it's responsible use post-9/11.

Batman Begins is not.

That last line in Begins is brilliant "I never said thank you." "And you never have to"

Chills man.

Yup. That's Batman right there. And then Nolan completely undermined his character with TDK & TDKR. In all honesty, Nolan's trilogy got progressively worse.
