Uncharted 4 preview thread. New footage/info

Looks very nice.

Is this a "ok to pre-order game"?

Been burnt too many times the last few months with buying on day one :/
Yes. They didn't rush this game out. Delayed it a few times till they were satisfied. Naughty Dog games typically ship in a good state.

This game is just pure bliss. I feel if I were to quit gaming after UC4 I'd be content. Course it's not gonna happen but this is one of those legends in making type of game.

The difference in textural quality here is beyond just a layer of SSS to be honest.

Not a big deal, it's a friggin hand, and ND decided to better use those resources elsewhere.

Tbh, I'd wait until the game comes out and compare it with the reveal gameplay before anyone here claims "upgrade" or "downgrade"...for all we know, it may just be that Drake's hands were muddier in the reveal gameplay. Besides, not sure why they'd want to use resources elsewhere considering they're all PS4 gameplay lol.

amazing stuff

Crash Bandicoot and Max Payne are part of my childhood. This is amazing!

...
That is supposed to look better than UC4?, not the character model nor the animation best out UC4.

Also... that hand hitting *not really hitting* the wall is bothering me.

Some people have pointed out Jacks brother looks a bit derpy there compared to the rest of the game.
Here's mc's face from gameplay. Looks damn great, but still wish they hadn't started the vs biz.

This face freaks me out.

Quantum Break looks good, but Uncharted is in a different league. The animation and physics looks so cool. While it is not perfect, I don't think any game comes close to the polish of everything.

GAF I love you, but please stop saying this like this.

Also, forshame that comparison stuff had to enter the thread. Wait for release media and proper comparisons of things. Bad people, bad.

People sure love this image.

It is very impressive.

Really just loving the colors of this level. Glad they increased the saturation in the other level too.

Fucking hell man, Naughty dogs is here to redefine what we've come to expect of our machines yet again. This game looks beyond anything we've seen this gen, jesus.

The winch wrap impressed me most. Usually you'd walk up to the tree, press the button prompt and it'd wrap around automatically. Here you're manually carrying, wrapping and even the tightening of the loop's animated.

The draw distance and lack of jarring pop-in is really nice. The Last of Us had pretty aggressive LOD, but it was subtle and rarely ever distracting. That's one of many things ND is great at.

I loved this as well. At first I was like where is the button prompt but then you yourself are actually in control of wrapping around the tree. It does a great job of showing of real time physics and keeping control in the players hands.

I liked how he switches hands when he's pulling the cable too, so it doesn't just phase through his body or something weird.

Is throwing back grenades back? From all the videos I saw I didn't see it.

I hope it is, loved that feature in UC3.

Just imagine running to the edge of a platform/ edge, quickly throwing a back grenade then while still moving jumping of edge, using the rope grapple/swing manoeuvrer to then finally turn the camera to watch behind as the explosion goes off.

Yeah, I noticed that too! Honestly there are so many amazing animations in this game... truly on a league of its own in this department.

That is the most detailed in-gameplay face I've seen yet. Very impressive!

Looks easthetically very pleasing to the eyes. Don't think i have seen games being this interesting to look at even with superior graphical bruteforcing, perhaps Skyrim mods being the only ones.

The Jeep’s great
It took me literally seconds to forget the Jeep was a new thing once I took off across the mud. The handling - the way it slips in the wet, or slides around corners with a nudge on the handbrake - is instantly familiar and enjoyable. It’s always a good sign when you’re fishtailing around hairpins simply because it’s fun to do.

The vehicle exploration works nicely too. The area I played wasn't exactly hard to get lost in, with a few forks in the road, mostly more or less all going the same way, but the freedom to poke around on wheels is welcome. There’s also an element of traversal puzzling as you grip and slide across muddy patches in search of rocks to grip on, or find the way up a tricky slope.

The levels are way more open
Previous Uncharted games have always been about ‘in front’. That’s the direction you’re heading and where the enemies are coming from. The series has been a resolutely forward-facing action corridor until now, but number four is more of a bowl. A bowl full of angry men.

It’s not completely open world, more a hub, and while things have definitely expanded, the action’s still very familiar - cover-based shooting, grenade dodging and running punches to the face. However, being able to take your time to scope an area out, locate enemies, and maybe snap a few necks before opening fire, creates a lot of replayability.

I played through one fight a number of times and there seemed to be a range of angles to attack it from. Like ramming though the guards with the jeep and mopping up the remains, or sniping from a guard tower, and of course the traditional ‘shoot all the things from behind walls’. As a test I even managed a full stealth run through the whole thing, taking out every guard without raising a single alarm. A lot of necks were broken that day.

"in the process", those aren't supposed to be robots, when i hear someone got knocked out right in front of me i don't react like i heard some water bottle falling of the table.

Yeah let's hope it's was just on very easy difficulty.

Dude, even MGSV has unrealistic reactions to noises.

Has any game developer ever driven a vehicle through any amount of water? Even at low speed there is considerable spray. And the "wobbly" water is really off putting. The super reflective mud is also quite jarring when viewed in the video.

However, the mud flung up from tyres looks great. And the clothes getting soaked after driving through the water fall adds great realism.

Talking about faces, i found that all those games with scan faces too look veeeery uncanny valley-ish, but something like uncharted 4 wich is a kinda of in-between to look very normal and not weird at all.

Edit: In the case of Until Dawn looks even like some kind of intended desing making it look even more like a B horror movie like something you would see in Deadly Premonition.

Man....

I was watching the IGN video and they do a good job in making the gun combat look bad. Especially the parts with the handgun. The player seems to be better with the sniper rifle a little later but he/she sucks with the handgun, holy cow.

If you were expecting Game reviewers to be good at games you were mistaken from the beginning, some, if not most of them are pretty average if not bad at them. In fact most of them admittedly play games on the easiest difficulty for their reviews.

Holy shit those uncharted gifs. Every time i worry about this PS4k business and i see Uncharted 4 on the original PS4 my confidence is restored lol.

That is probably because Quantum Break and Until Dawn character models are a 1:1 depiction of their actors' faces. Uncharted 4 is a much more stylized version of their mocap actors.

Wow, Eurogamer seems pretty down on the gameplay, especially the melee and AI.

I agree with them that triangle for reload is yuck though. That took time getting used to in the beta.

Until Dawn ran in the low 20s for a considerable portion of the game, and it was almost always under 30, so those visuals came at a price. I'd rather have what we have with UC4 at a stable frame rate.

I'm sure the game will be awesome (and it's a treat visually), but why the goddamn assassin's creed grass and far cry marks and ugly highlight stealth-UI.

Pushing towards "me-too" stealth implementations adds nothing at best, and makes things bad at worst.

I have no issue with MGS and Far Cry, I don't hate "options", I don't hate "approaches", I don't hate "playstyles", quite the contrary actually, there are very few linear games I truly enjoy. But Uncharted is one of the series that makes the best out of linear encounters and sequences, so why do they have to have that, it's beyond me.

I know they can be pressure to adopt common trends in the AAA business (no doubt why the last Tomb Raider sacrificed half of its predecessor's taste for tightly crafted scripted combat encounters, in favor of "zomg do it all in stealth" sequences that turn out to be crap when played as straight up shooting).

But here it's fucking Naughty Dog, they're one of the few devs that can do whatever the hell they want, so why did they chose to do this ? why add bits of "the same things every other game does" ?

Uncharted 2 and 3 had way enough stealth imo, but let's say you'd want more : The Last Of Us did have "different approaches", but was its own brand, I enjoyed that.
Here the mix and match from other games is just baffling.

Again, I know, I don't have to engage in that, etc etc. And before I've tried it, I can't acertain that the firefights will be less good in those "open" environments + I know linear stuff and set pieces are in there and this is probably just a small portion of the experience.

So most likely I'll just shoot my way through those few sequences without marking a single dude and be fine with this. This very likely won't hamper my enjoyment of the game. I'm just wondering why the hell.
