Uncharted 4 preview thread. New footage/info

These previews and videos are sounding great.

The Jeep riding around looks like fun and I love that they have brought in a more "Last of Us" vibe in terms of characters interacting with one another and having banter.

From the Ars Technica write up:

In-game character faces and animations certainly pale compared to this month's beautiful Xbox exclusive, Quantum Break, but Uncharted fans may prefer the polygonal budget being spent on those incredible views anyway.

What the heck? Did they see the same game? Quantum Break better animation? The uncharted games have such minute animation details and different animations for things that almost no other game even comes close.

It's true for the facial animations and in-game facial models, not true for the character movement animations in-game. But that's enough about QB in the Uncharted 4 thread. This game looks pretty impressive, and seems to have some similarities with the latest metal gear.

I came into the thread earlier questioning the animal vista comparison gifs and was told they were different locations. Watching the footage now, I don't see how there's a segment where they're closer and able to do that scene. What gives?

*off to continue watching.

It's not even true for that.

But it's Ars. So whatever.

Yeah, direct comparisons are not constructive, but what I find puzzling is how some people miss how perfectly ND rides a line between cartoon and realism to create something really amazing to look at.

What ND creates is art. A lot of what other devs create in many games feels like a cheap recreation of reality, even when it's done well. I vastly prefer the artistic approach of ND.

That is probably because Quantum Break and Until Dawn character models are a 1:1 depiction of their actors' faces. Uncharted 4 is a much more stylized version of their mocap actors.

This is a good point. I'm guessing that's how nd did it. For me there is zero uncanny valley w drake at least.

Someone make a new thread.

No doughnut Drake in UC4!

According to Neil Druckmann the decision was made to take the character out because, "I didn't want to have a laugh at someone’s expense," adding that, "I thought we’d matured beyond that."

That's not to say Donut Drake wasn't on the cards. "We actually had the whole thing modelled and in there," explains Druckmann, concluding that the team, "decided to make the call not to do it." A choice that was made internally: "we had a big debate about it and kind of approached it from all kinds of angles and decided we weren't comfortable having it in our game."

The thing that keeps sticking out watching the combat is the melee. Looks so fucking tight.

I'm slightly concerned that the deadzone issue that got patched in the first beta is present in the campaign. I can't comprehend how bad these journos are at aiming :p

That vehicle stuff reminds me a lot of the batmobile platforming sections in Batman Arkham Knight, but it looks done in a more organic way.

I'm really liking the look of this.

I feel like the more open environments lend themselves to the adventuring feel of Uncharted more than the mostly super linear environments of the previous games. It adds with bit natural more tension release between the combat sandboxes while still remaining engaging in some way to find treasures and what not. I really like how this changes treasure placement to a means of small naturally placed challenges to break up pacing evenly rather than breaking up the narrative, it's a nice touch how Sam and Sully chat off in the background and the sound design smartly lowers their volume but keeps them loud enough.

Combat sandbox here looks great, it's open enough with enough natural design on how to proceed, but there's still some open options on proceeding and that grappling hook is put to nice use as a tool to expand the traversal and melee. Will probably do without the marking tool though. It's like an arcadey take on TLOU's brutal combat as UC should be.

Graphically, folks there's not much to be said that it just looks outstanding. The art is amazing and the animation throughout is so good, it boggles my mind.

This is looking very good, but ultimately an extension of Naughty Dog's previous ventures rather than a crazy reinvention or new thematic approach to the genre like RE4 or Gears of War. A solid Feather in the PS4 library to come it seems.

I was hoping ND would take a few notes from the recent Tomb Raider games in terms of more open-ended adventuring and combat, and it looks like they have.

It was the next, obvious evolutionary step for Uncharted.

Yep, and it looks absolutely incredible. Really can't wait to play this.

It's not, man. Really, it's not. Ars's statement is wrong, now Xbone owners trying to do the same as Ars. That's funny and sad at the same time.

It’s good fun, splashing along, learning how to make steep inclines by staying on rocky outcrops to maintain traction. En route, the trio indulges in easy, entertaining chatter. Sully moans about the extra price Sam paid for a car with a winch (“I bet we’ll never use it” he complains – in a way that instructs the player that they almost certainly will); Sam yells patronising instructions to his younger brother from the backseat. It’s the sort of loose, charming dialogue we’ve always enjoyed in the series, but with the addition of another character, the dynamic is slightly different. While Nathan is off investigating the little ruins you discover dotted around the landscape, Sam and Sully often sit back and bicker about the past, revealing handy plot details in the process.

To Cambier, this interplay is an absolutely crucial element of the series, and especially in this last game. A lot of the story is revealed through these seemingly off-the-cuff dialogue moments during playable sections. When a cut-scene is necessary, though, the more powerful PS4 hardware has allowed Naughty Dog to use the in-game engine, so the cinematics now merge seamlessly with interactive sequences.

“We’ve always been interested in the idea of protagonists working with allies, and the systemic moments this creates” he says. “In the combat stages you have these moments where your brother comes in and helps you, or Sully call things out …then we have this larger, more organic exploration space, so you’re driving around exploring and the types of conversations that we can have … we’re building these relationships constantly. In the games industry, we have this idea of gameplay, story, gameplay, story … but in this game, the story is always happening, you’re always with these people, you’re doing things together. It’s very challenging, but it makes the game more interesting”.

Sorry to bring up the QB thing again but they are soooo not comparable. They are aiming for a completely different look. Realistic versus stylised.

On topic(ish), I just finished the first uncharted from the remastered collection about an hour ago. LOVE IT. While ive finished it before on ps3, I've never played the sequels. May 10th is an appropriate amount of time away for those platinums. =D

Double melee takedown with Sam @2:40 in the video
You can also see the effect of the realtime cutscenes.

COmpared to the other times we saw this cutscene after they see the explosion, Drake and crew are still wet

really nice

Nice catch. Assuming that the bonuses section managed to make its way to Uncharted 4, the fact that the cutscenes are now in real time makes me eager for the use of unlockable outfits in the game.
