Uncharted 4 preview thread. New footage/info

Ellie vs David is one of the most primal, harrowing boss fights I can remember playing

Granted that's not the Uncharted series but still, tense as all hell

2's final boss fight was decent as it puts the core game mechanics front and center

1 and 3 had pitiful final bosses and made use of out-of-nowhere and/or unpolished game mechanics.

4's had to be better, regardless. There's no way they allow it to be worse... Right?

Crazy how much ND has actually expanded the franchise with this release. It's certainly not just more of exactly the same. Vehicle segments integral to the gameplay itself, rope swing and mobility mechanics, improved stealth, completely redesigned open sandbox esque level design, re-worked combat and gunplay and so on. They could have just made their lives easier and essentially replicated the exact design of past games in the franchise, but I feel they've done a huge amount to push the franchise forward in new ways. With that said, I hope the core linear set piece experiences do still exist, and are fairly plentiful.

You can better you bottom dollar they'll be there....And glorious they will be....

Man, it’s hard getting through Uncharted 1 on Crushing after watching this...AI is sooooo cheap in the first game and Drake is so stiff lol.

Mannnnn I hope ND just releases this demo same way the released the one for TLOU

Correct me if I'm wrong but the playable snippet that was released to the public was the same one from the preview event

Someone tell me I can hope, I can dream

Yeah that would be awesome. I'd even be happy with only the combat section. It would help me wait for the full game.
I doubt it will happen though.

Developer saying his game has the best boss fight is not big news.

Yeah, but like I was saying, the Uncharted boss battles are notoriously bad. Particularly Lazarevic, Draza, and Navaro. They're really something that ND are better off not even talking about unless they've really stepped up their game in that area.

This will backfire if it's not like 10 times better than the boss fights of Uncharted 1-3. They were ridiculously bad and boring.

Which means that all they'd have to do is make one that's simply "good". :P

You can bet your ass that the U4 final boss fight will feature the grappling hook mechanic, probably a bit of stealth, and maybe even driving.

Shirtless fist fight atop a burning pirate ship with flashbacks, callbacks and music interludes from Uncharted 1,2 & 3.

Do we get an hour long epilogue after the fight? Will Sully die on a field littered with white lilies as Nate shares one last smoke with him? :P

You mean like Uncharted 3

Uncharted 3 was hardly crucified by critics, but yea, it essentially was more of the same, only very slightly tweaked, with the emphasis on the melee and more dynamic encounters. But that is generally the case with sequels. Uncharted 4 seems like more of an expansion and evolution than normal.

New hardware will allow that .
ND did say this is the UC they always want to make .

I'm fine if the game doesn't have a final boss battle at all, especially if they try to force it in there just to make things even more climactic. I'm more than fine with something similar to the ending of Halo 1 with you on the jeep trying to escape a collapsing ancient city maybe while being attacked by the human goons and mercenaries or perhaps some supernatural threat.

I do think we will have at least one "boss" fight when we take on the mercenary woman which should be interesting if they try to go with a protracted intense one on one fight. Depends on if the mechanics can keep it interesting and varied over a longer period than just punching a random enemy, maybe dodging a telegraphed counter attack, then finishing them off which is what a lot of the fist fights in UC have been like. They could make it more an environmental puzzle where you have to use elements of the surroundings during the battle to advance and win or if the mechanics are deep enough it could be more of a typical chip away at the health boss fight.

I would love if they keep evolving their boss fights after what TLoU gave us and make them "cinematic" in a way but keeping the actual fight interesting and eventful while also making it feel like you are in control of your actions.

hmm, watched the IGN preview and some other jeep driving footage. not impressed at all.. art style puts me right off and i'm not seeing anything amazing about the visuals, am i crazy..? i was far more impressed when i saw and played UC2, UC3 and TLoU on PS3.

also doesn't look very interesting gameplay wise.

maybe i just haven't seen enough, can anyone link me some really incredible footage if it exists?

This is probably the best footage from this preview

Well, MGS2 and MGS3 were on the same hardware, MGS4 and MGS V were on the same hardware and those games are completely different from each other. Hardware limitation definitely has some impact but ND played it safe game with Uncharted 3

Dude you watching it on a IGN player!

For the gameplay to me the fun is the driving around and exploring not to mention the funny banter.

There definitely more weight to things like characters being shot and falling look more convincing. Gun sounds appears to be upgraded.

Although IGN sucks i doubt any other footage will impress you.
Maybe find another game to get hyped about.

Don't understand how can anyone not be impressed visually, what other game that renders such huge environment looks better? I don't know any.

About the gameplay, it was more about exploration, atmosphere, the small talks and dialogues than anything too crazy and exciting like the E3's Jeep chase demo, if you don't dig such atmospheric moments with light exploration than maybe the game isn't for you, nothing wrong with that.

They gotta go all out for the last Uncharted they'll make.

I love bosses, I feel it should have if but like you said they should use what they learned with TLOU. The winter boss battle was fantastic, fit the game perfectly and had all the elements of a good boss battle. They need that.

Boss fight hype. I thought they might have given up on bosses in Uncharted but I'm glad they haven't. I think with all the core combat mechanics they've added they could make a legit boss fight. I'm thinkin something with plenty of mid-air shooting and melee as you are rope swinging across a chasm or raging sea.

The less ND looks to MGS4 for inspiration, the better.

Pls

That was the only part of MGS4 I liked. The boss battle. Cause it reminded me of other (better) MGS games.

Oh, yay, someone got the joke. :P And don't worry, I loved MGS4, but I don't want Uncharted 4 to take inspiration from it either. Just made a joke as a response to Nightengale's post. I don't know if he meant it on purpose, but it felt way too similar.

How would you feel if they showed a flashback of Nate and Elena getting married while shooting bad guys? :P

I wonder if this one will have a supernatural twist. All of the previous ones had (maybe not 3 but still had it in a different way), so I am hoping for it, not quite sure what it could be.

Yeah but MGS5 for example was too much for the HW to handle. It's like trying to run the game on a windows tablet. A ton of compromises had to be made and that still wasn't enough to get it looking great and running well.

I would actually love a great boss battle in a UC game and I think the game play would be great for it but perhaps because of the semi realistic setting of most things they can't really take full advantage of it. This isn't Gears of War where there all kinds of crazy monsters popping up, some big as buildings, and even when we did get supernatural enemies in UC they were fairly conventional in what they did and how you fought them, mostly they either just took more damage or had some gimmick about them.

I would love a boss battle that was all about taking on a super deadly enemy that didn't need tons of ammo pumped into them, maybe only taking a few shots to kill but they have all of drakes skills and moves but maybe are even faster and sneakier so they are constantly ambushing you before running off, basically taking you on Guerrilla style. Would work great to have an almost predator like battle with an enemy in a jungle or some abandoned ruins with them sniping at you or popping up around a corner, so on and so forth.

That said I'd also love a well made bullet sponge boss, could be something supernatural like some kind of unearthed beast that is wrecking the level as you battle him, maybe bringing down ceilings or smashing your cover to smithereens constantly forcing you to move and jump around the environment as there is never a truly safe spot and its always on your ass. Could also go more realistic and make it a tank battle where you are given an open area to battle it as its blasting away walls and buildings with its cannon or just running them over.

I think a great boss battle is totally possible for UC, they just to really make it something that is as fun and interesting to play as it is to watch and should really emphasize best using your abilities and the game play. A boss battle should challenge the skills you've been building up and mastering through the rest of the game.

Good point. I'm sure they learned a lot about that whole situation.

They usually try to build significantly on previous ideas and designs though (although, admittedly, not as significant as the changes in Uncharted 4 seem to be), and even more so with Druckmann and Straley at the helm, who are a pretty ambitious duo.

I'm really disappointed with the alert status look during stealth. In the PSX demo they had that TLOU highlight and a bright light would show up on the corner of screen when ever you we close to being spotted. Now they have this hideous outline and a huge triangle that fills up.

Who thought that was a good idea? I would like to use that feature but now I'll have to turn it of because of how awful it looks.

Yeah I don't understand why everyone hate's 2's final boss. It's not amazing, but at least it's not a QTE (UC1) or a glorified QTE (UC3). I kinda hope they just do it like TLOU, just have a really intense final stage.

2's boss fight is fine on Normal, but garbage on Hard. He throws five grenades at a time, for fuck's sake.

I've already cancelled my pre-order.

Thanks!

Every time I see the jeep and winch mechanic I can't help but worry it will be this game's equivalent to TLOU's water and pallet sequences. I trust ND to do a lot of things right, but they've clearly shown questionable judgment about certain things in the past. Please don't make this vehicle/open world/"puzzle" solving stuff so frequent that it turns repeat playthroughs into a chore.

Yea if there's one thing I didn't like about TLOU it was those "move the trash trailer" so you can climb stuff haha.

Sure it helped the pacing a bit... but just so tame and uninteresting haha.

I think the good thing about Uncharted 4 is that they won't seem as forced if they are in, since in general the areas are more open.... so it won't feel like walking through a corridor to a forced "do this to pass" sequence.

I believe these were partly done to mask loading times. Could they have come up with better ways to kill some time while the next area was loaded up? Most likely but they've been advancing every other element of the game play, presentation and story with each of their games so hopefully the environmental puzzles and such will be more varied and interesting. Also the technical limitations on the PS4 are far less of a constraint so forced simple puzzle sections shouldn't be needed in UC4.

Developer saying his game has the best boss fight is not big news.

The point is that the boss fights in Uncharted have always been among the lowest points in the games - and Naughty Dog have basically never mentioned them. The fact that they mention this one at all is a standout thing - the fact that they praise it is a big plus.
