Uncharted 4 preview thread. New footage/info

Here you go:

Lol, that leap out of the jeep

"'Scuse me, Sully - wooh whoa!"

I foresee myself spending a lot of time next to these puddles and ponds.

Water shader caustics ftmfw. Once I unlock that unlimited ammo cheat I will never leave.... haha.

Uh oh. Not clicking those spoilers lol. Time to stay away from Uncharted threads now.
Yep.
There is always this person who thinks it's a good idea to start discussing spoilers... They're usually the same people who think it's not a problem to talk during a theater show or a movie, ruining everyone's evening. "But what is the problem?" You are.

Please don't start discussing spoilers in this thread, even if it's just joking or they're tagged. It's hard to discuss anything else with the risk of running into them.

For those worried, that person did not share any spoilers. He himself has not seen the entire art book yet so he does not get spoiled.

Its safe for now, unless someone else gets it and spoils the story for everyone.

The decals should disappear with a dissolve effect or something. Even when going straight under the waterfall the instant mud -> no mud transition is jarring.

True. I just noticed it in another video where they go straight through the waterfall when driving out of the cave and the windshield is clean afterwards. Its not really jarring when you're doing it that way, but when you're slowly driving close to the waterfall like in the gif, its really looks weird when the mud suddenly disappears. But its not a bug something, thats what I wanted to say.

Only 30 days left.

Kinda thinking of doing a 'Let's Play' or 'Come Play With Us' thread about Uncharted wherein we go through the UC1-3 or Nathan Drake Collection or Golden Abyss.

I think the game got confused there, because the water isn't very deep where Nate lands in that gif. The game probably assumed that he just walked into it. Though some of the splashes when driving with the jeep also look very weak.

Yea I think it's just looking slightly flat because it's using a shader alone. I think Witcher 3's does the same, I like the water here better though.

I would guess it's in a similar way the mud is being used, but mud has much more "texture" than water of course.

Just my guess. Probably the same contact between character/mesh of the car/nate to create the same splash.

Not that it looks bad though. I like consistency in interactivity. Water in games has always been one of my favourite things, because you can almost always count on it to be interactive in some way, and if it is it generally looks fab :D

Takes me all the way back to being wowed by the dungeon pools to quench thirst in Dark Cloud 1 :)

Or the jello water surface of MGS2 ;)

I always love ND's character design. Something about it is very special

Agreed. There is virtually zero 'uncanny valley' due to their artistic style/vision. Characters feel believable and real, without falling prey to that it seems.

Not sure if it has been posted, but someone got shipped the Art of Uncharted 4 a bit early

Here is the post from Reddit

You know what this means? This person isn't the only one that got the artbook, so ending spoilers may be out there.

I needs this. *Running to Google.*

Edit: Sweet, they have a similar Art of Uncharted Trilogy as well!

Absolutely.

I think in those BTS scenes they were even showing how they capture the facial animation, with those cameras directly on the faces of the actors, that was quite interesting!

So annoying I can't get this on the UK store, but can purchase the Art of Uncharted Trilogy LE at a hugely inflated price. If Sony are going to overcharge for one in the UK, at least overcharge for both so I can get the full set.

This GIF is quite interesting because water caustics similar to this is one of the things they were advertising would be included in the original Uncharted in the early tech demos I believe.

I think there are GIFs available of those probably, not sure if I have them saved. This is a shader version of caustics I'm sure though.

i don't understand, the game will have real water caustics or the same shader based version like the previous uncharted games ?

I think it's just a shader one, at least for these puddles and scenes.

Might have other kind of water elsewhere, but probably mostly or all shaders I would assume.

But was just highlighting how despite the "actual water caustics" probably not being present most of the time, the concept/application of some way to simulate behaviour of water is still there.

Many games in the past have had water caustics, generally pretty simple stuff though, Dark Cloud specifically in the fishing ponds or the "drinking ponds" in dungeons for example all the way back in 2001.

All just matters what they feel is appropriate for the scene/hardware/etc. Looks good in this though, quite an advanced shader.

The shader seems doing caustics emulation if you notice the ripples seem to interact with each other (troughs and peaks is the simplest way to describe it). It's just that it is a shader and not changing the actual model of the water, but it is still an emulation of water caustics where ripples interact with the characters, environment, and even other ripples, that is demonstrated through a shader solution.

Imagine parking under the waterfall and the jeep fills up with water, forcing the npcs to open their doors, causing water to rush out. Now their clothes are all wet and and they start complaining.

More of this type of stuff in games is what I want.

Except that that stuff would take forever to animate and program. And only 0.05% of people would ever see all that hard work because who the hell intentionally parks their jeep underneath a waterfall?

I'm assuming all of these game mechanics will be in the next Tomb Raider game huh? LOL

Actually RoTR has most of these game mechanics (save the superior animation in UC4). Wet characters, snow on hair (that's actually real hair fibers), footprints in snow (that's actual dynamic deformation), splashes, etc.. It just doesn't look anywhere near as good as UC4.

So a better version of the water tech used in the previous uncharted games, but still the same. I hate with all myself shader based water caustics, i want real model deformation!!!! Shader based it's still so fake, like a modified version of mercury :( :( :(
