Wkd Box Office 04•01-03•16 - BvS has 'worse legs than Barbara Gordon' -- Sibersk Esto

Man of Steel had strong home video sales.

Home video sales in general are pretty interesting. Hotel Transylvania 2 handily beat The Good Dinosaur at the box office last year. However, The Good Dinosaur's first week of DVD/Bluray sales in the US was higher than HT2's 10 week LTD total.

Just saw that on the-numbers (I'm assuming that's where you got that from).

Is there any explanation for that? Good Dinosaur had a worse reception than HT2. Maybe people like collecting pixar stuff? Maybe the pixar name on the case? Or poor marketing for the movie when it came out? Kids seem to like that movie though, my niece was talking about it the other day.

Disney has unrivaled home video ground game; other publishers and distributors can't even come close (maybe Dreamworks?).

Gerard Butler: bigger than Superman
in China.

I saw this last night. It was shockingly tense and exciting. I don't know who the director is but he can teach Snyder a thing or two about maintaining beats and tension throughout a film.

The "single take" sequence was more intense, coherent and exciting than anything in BvS. All done for 1/5 the price and will probably wind up with a bigger return on investment percentage for the studio.

The disappointing BO led to a bunch of kids not seeing The Good Dinosaur. Disney most likely flooded stores with discs on release and got prime floor space to advertise. The Disney name along with Pixar holds a lot of weight even if it did misfire at the BO. Parents looking for a new animated film to buy would see TGD and realize their kid does not have it in their Disney/Pixar collection.

Misfire at the BO but 2nd chance at retail.

Something like that.

I thought I was losing my mind but during the film, my heart was beating so fast. It's rare that I actually see a film and was completely engrossed and tense about it.

The thing was even though I like Olympus has Fallen, I was so ready to dismiss this as a cash-in (which it is) and I didn't bother to see it until it was cheapo price ($10) but I'm glad I saw it in the cinema and will be getting it on Blu-ray as well.

The Boss tops BvS?...

4th UPDATE, Sunday 12:30AM: When Universal executives wake up Sunday morning, they’ll likely have something to crow about: Melissa McCarthy’s The Boss appears to batman-v-supermanhave elbowed Warner Bros. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice out of No. 1 after its two weekend hold, with respective industry projections for each title at $24.5M and $23.3M.

He didn't! He made it a point on the press tour to point out that he'd never really read any of the comics, or watched any of the previous movies. He had no idea what the fuck a Lex Luthor was supposed to act like. He just rolled with it.

That seems like a bulletproof plan to secure the loyalty comic book fans....

When you are playing an original character. This version of Lex was life the love child of the joker and riddler

Eh. I thought it was an interesting evolution of the live-action movies Luthor. The character suffered from poor directing and writing, but Eisenberg was fine.

Eisenberg's Lex worked.

Because if they made him any less crazy, he would have been the only relatable person in the whole movie. :P

Hopefully, we get some more quality spin from Jeff Goldstein this week. His efforts in the previous two weeks have been highly entertaining.

Anecdotal, but I know plenty of people who collect Pixar/Disney blu-rays/dvd's. If one film is of lesser quality that won't stop people from adding it to their collection. I think quite some people just like to have all Pixar films. Same goes for MCU, for example, if a person owns most of those, chances are he will still buy Thor 2 over a lot of other superiour films. I know I do the same with some music artists and gameseries.

The man didn't even have a Facebook account until he landed the Zuckerberg role.

Dude is...weird.

Not having a Facebook account doesn't mean you don't know what Facebook is. I'm sure he knows who Lex Luthor is, he's just saying that he doesn't care for comics and that he's only committed to the role as it is in the film. That's fine too. Nothing weird about it.

Looks like BvS is going to stop in the $95-97M range in China.

Its going to need to hit at least $865M to top Deadpool without China. More if Japan doesnt ignore DP.

Official third weekend estimate for BvS was $23.4M (-54%). I am curious to see the Saturday total though, because that seems high based on Friday.

There we go!

Big 76% SAT jump for #BatmanvSuperman, 3rd wknd comes in at $23.4M, off 54%. $296.7M cume. Will join $300M club midweek.

So a 76% increase on Saturday and a $23.44M prediction for the weekend means that they are projecting a 35% drop on Sunday. Seems reasonable. Even if the weekend is overpredicted, it shouldn't be by much.

BvS' strong Saturday boost may mean good things for Zootopia as well.

Weekend Studio Estimates:

1) The Boss - $23.48M
2) Batman v Superman - $23.44M - $297M total
3) Zootopia - 14.35M - $296M total

We will need to wait until tomorrow to see which film actually places #1 for the weekend.

Hang on, where's Jungle Book? If there's one movie that should handily dethrone Bats vs Supes, that should be it. Amazing movie, disappointed it's not doing well in the US box office.

Edit: Oh, didn't realize it's not out in the US yet. Just came back from it; y'all should see it next week, it's incredible stuff.

If that Zootopia estimate holds, it would be the #8 spot in best 6th weekends ever, two spots ahead of TFA. It opened with less than a third of TFA. What a run.

It opens next week in the US.
