My first run in with a stereotypical gamer.

I don't wanna pick on the OP too much, but when I think of a "stereotypical gamer" I think of someone who would actually write "obserdly" instead of picking an easier word that (s)he knows how to spell correctly, among other things.

Also someone who uses gamer phrases, which include everything from "pown" to "free" and everything in between.

Got into an "argument" with a fedora-wearing """hardcore gamer""" at a previous job about "feminazis ruining gaming" and things like that. I asked him a couple of times to back his claims with evidence and it was like we didn't even speak the same langage. It was pretty depressing to get the confirmation that these stereotypical dudes I only saw online so far are very real.

This is why I hate trying to shop for games at Half Price Books during coupon sales. There's always some awkward person with terrible personal hygiene and an anime shirt making goo-goo eyes at whatever overpriced "rare" games locked up in the case, making it impossible to look for anything yourself. Asking them to move is pointless since it'll either get you into an awkward conversation or fall on deaf ears since they're awkward/absorbed. No other section of the store has this problem.

OP reminded me of this since my last coupon run had a dude with the fedora+trenchcoat+ponytail+stench combo ogling N64 games.
 
For me the stereotypical gamer is an overweight neckbeard who lives at home and consumes "gamer fuel". Doesn't shower and has absolutely zero social skills... wait.

Seriously. They always have fucking terrible acne too. And I've met a few that consider themselves to be meninists. It's appalling really.
 
I know exactly what OP means and met a guy like this at grad school. He referenced anime constantly in his papers, and even once referenced a slightly erotic visual novel in one of his presentations. He made everyone nervous.
 
I might be able to unshit a butter knife that's been butter-lubed, but even then I'm not sure my rectum is tough enough for that.

I always laugh when watching Olympic runners. The fools don't even lean forward to reduce air resistance. Even the lowliest ninja from Ancient Japan would be able to destroy Usain Bolt in the 100 meter.

Ugh, complaining about video games in real life is soo last decade.

Nowadays people use GAF for that. Tell that loser to get with the times.
 
I was at the Sony E3 Theater Experience last year and there was one guy who'd sit up there screaming, "That's Video Games" or "Video... Games" and then he'd start naming off all the characters and games when Sony would air their starting and ending video for the conference.

It was absolutely horrible. I have my own dignity and I also have some standards. I don't care if you're screaming your head off with enjoyment, but don't be "that guy".

There are people who are incredibly shallow about gaming. I've met people who questioned small intricate things, voiced concern over knowing how games were made, criticized me for enjoying Japanese made games (in a weird way), and then ignored games completely because that was it for them.

I've run into people who would end your sentences or they'd ignore your thought for theirs. I went to GameStop at the mall, a few months before Square-Enix released FF7-9 on PSN and told the guy I heard they're doing it and he swore up and down that "No, no they weren't and that he'd know about it if they did".

I got to the point to where I just ignore disagreeing and even agreeing when I know there is only one way out of the conversation. It's tricky because there's so many people who think they know it all or they're against it.

I told one guy I use to LAN with that, "you're not the type of person I'd really want to discuss things with" and that goes with E3. I asked if a group of guys who I lanned with, to go to the Sony event.

It was like I asked them to go to some real life- RPG expo where they needed to act out their parts. To me, I can have a conversation about it without feeling the power struggle or ashamed.

I stopped talking to them because we didn't have anything to really base a friendship off of. It's weird I even bring it up. I've always kept my hobby or habit of playing a video game to myself or to people who enjoy the same things. Outside of that, get another topic to discuss because I'll break from the conversation as soon as I can. You can spend hours complaining about work, drama with people, politics, or something going on in your life, but you can't find some sorta middle ground that isn't a stereotype to talk about video games.

You can game without the stereotypes, but sometimes people don't want to ignore the stereotype because it's prevalent. It feels as if it's some sorta crux to base personal opinions about someone else. Otherwise, who cares?
