As omens go, this isn't a great one: an Amazon jaguar was shot dead shortly after its participation in a torch lighting ceremony honoring the Rio Olympics.

Juma the jaguar had participated in the ceremony in the city of Manaus, where it had been chained up as local notables held the Olympic torch. After the ceremony, the jaguar, which was tranquilized, apparently began approaching a soldier, who fired and killed the jaguar with a single shot.

Jaguars are a nearly threatened species, and have been eradicated in several central American nations. The local environmental authority indicated that the ceremony's organizers had not sought permission to use the jaguar. "No request was made to authorize the participation of the jaguar "Juma" in the event of the Olympic torch," the authority said in a statement, according to Reuters. Local and international animal rights activists have already protested the move.

“We made a mistake in permitting the Olympic torch, a symbol of peace and unity, to be exhibited alongside a chained wild animal. This image goes against our beliefs and our values,” the Rio 2016 organizing committee said in a statement. "We guarantee that there will be no more such incidents at Rio 2016.”

This has been a collective facepalm to everyone here in brazil.

The nicest thing I hear about is "the military now discovered that wild animals fear fire ... can't wait when they discover the wheel"

Cruel and humiliating. Please, boycott it and spare us the embarrassment.

I would never attend this shit. They can try to cover the tragic situation in Rio and maybe even manage to cover up most things during the Olympics, just fucking cynical. Building stadiums while people die waiting in a hospital, while criminals (of all sorts) rule, while the city declares bankruptcy. Wake me up when its all over.

I have a feeling this will be the lowest-rated, lowest attended Olympics in history. It continues to be an unsafe clusterfuck run by morons with no concern for human well being.

"We guarantee that there will be no more such incidents at Rio 2016."

Yeah, right. More likely it will be nothing but a series of similar and likely far worse incidents throughout the duration of this shitshow.

This image goes against our beliefs and our values,” the Rio 2016 organizing committee said in a statement.

If this were true, then why did you do it? I hate statements like this.

So you'll just have rare animals shot out of sight, just like homeless kids, eh?

the olympics are going to lose a lot of good will after this year.

Similar levels of shenanigans happened at Beijing. Four years is a long time in today's collective news memory.

There probably won't be much controversy in Tokyo in 2020, but hopefully more scrutiny is placed on the selection process for 2024. However, I fear it will happen behind closed doors and out of the spotlight.

So the jaguar was still chained up and began walking towards someone, so they shot it?

Am I reading this right?

What in the shit is wrong with people?

This is going to be an Olympics for the record books. I'm fully expecting stadium collapses and people dying before all is said and done.

Even innocent animals are treated like IOC structures

Thank god Boston voted against a bid. Hope this sentiment spreads.

I too am expecting a shitshow. I hope I'm wrong but the whole build up has been negative and questionable. This just reinforces that feeling.

Am I reading this right? Or did they let it off the chain...?

The CNN article said that the jaguar "broke free" of its confinement, which suggests it broke out of its chains. So I'm not sure what's right.

First of all that is fucked up.

But I had no idea the Olympic games were starting soon (already started?). And what has happened already to cause the comments in this thread?

Like they give a shit, "we made a mistake", you are the only mistake IOC, you are pure trash.

Hope there is riots down there for letting this shit happen amidst the social struggle going in the country.

Can i say i don't like the Olympics? I stopped watching it a long time ago still a waste of money and seeing shit like this makes me even more mad.

rio 2016 olympics needs to be relocated somewhere else..honestly...

Can i say i don't like the Olympics? I stopped watching it a long time ago still a waste of money and seeing shit like this makes me even more made.

The only thing that ever catches my interest is soccer. Everything else may as well be video feed of emprybseats on C-SPANN.

I have friends who obsess about the Olympics, and lets just say I try to avoid them during the Olympic seasons for fear of starting arguments with them.

As a kid I thought they were super cool, but nowadays I'd rather watch EVO or The International, where the players get paid, the sponsors get good advertising, and no one is ruining the local economy or environment to host them every year.

Why do they keep holding events like this in places they really can't afford to?
With the power of credit, you too can afford to host exorbitantly expensive events at the expense of your citizens' well being!

I mean, who really cares about paying it back? Your credit is probably shit anyway!

Don't forget tranquilized.

Sad thing is the poor thing was probably either just confused due to being drugged or possibly even trying to seek help/comfort. Sure it's wild, but wild animals have been known to interact with humans for help when scared or hurt.

Or even if none of the above just curious and walking about.

Fuck this shit show.

i think people still remember it being bad, maybe not the specifics anymore.

but this will be almost a decade before having a "good" olympics again in 2020 (provided there aren't more fuckups). especially in trying economic times and the burden the IOC puts on host countries.
