Not sure the % of planets that are Mass Effect 1 esque to rich/colourful planets, but I really like how like 8/10 of the planets I found were barren, albeit a little bit different from each other, because I spent the last ~8 hours on a planet that had plenty of fauna and flora, getting 100% discovery and finding all different things. Makes you appreciate these planets more.

Wow so I should have spent more time trying to find
drop pads for inventory space

What's a good way to consentienly find beacons?

Craft bypass chips and use them on "scanner stations". They are outside in the bigger settlements you find (usually the ones with landing pads). They then will ask you to pick what you want to scan for. Can't remember which one found drop pods but tbh whatever it markers for you will be useful.

Daaamn, this game. Played it all night last night, loving it! Yeah, gathering materials gets a bit tedious at times, but the overall experience is just awesome. Boosting out of the atmosphere of one planet, pulse jumping through space, and burning through the atmosphere of the next planet. Just wow. And the sense of scale is pretty awesome. It takes a really long time to fly between two planets if you don't use the pulse jump.

No performance issues for me yet, haven't really seen any noticeable drops below 30. I even tried the boosting in the the atmosphere thing, but I guess I didn't do it exactly in the way that causes issues. Which means it isn't a bit issue (IMO), because I have just been behaving normally, not trying to avoid doing certain things or anything.

My starting planet (yes, I know there is a photo thread):

nms_1phx7f.jpg

nms_2znbrx.jpg

Hot-ish, very rocky, with rather strange plantlife and sparse fauna. Not terribly exciting overall, but not too bad! I haven't really found any lush paradise planets yet, but most of them have been interesting enough in their own right.

A few things I've been wondering about:

1. Do you really have to upload every single discovery individually by holding Square on it? From earlier videos I though you would simply walk up to one of these transmitter things on a planet and upload all discoveries at once. Guess not?

2. How the hell do I find my starting system again? I looked at all the closest systems from my second system, but nope. Also tried that "find closest discovered" (or whatever), but that just took me to the closest system discovered by another player. I'm probably not gonna be necessarily discovering every single planet of every single system, but I did want to return to my starting system and finish the planets off. And now I can't find it again. :( I really wish the star map had a way to show a trail of the systems you've been to, but that doesn't seem to be in. Also, where's that star map mini-map they said would help you orient yourself in the galaxy? Not in either, it seems. I'm now in my 3rd system I think, but I almost don't want to continue until I've found my system again. It's not really important I guess, but that's MY system.

3. Can you not see your blueprints without going into the crafting menu? So, since you can only do that from an empty inventory square, if your inventory is full you have to dismantle something just to even see what you could build instead? Also, is it true that certain upgrades have to be placed next to their primary item to work? So if there's already something there you have to dismantle that thing first, since you can't move upgrades? Doesn't feel very well though out.

4. Is there any way to find a specific resource? Scanning just shows what types of resources there are nearby, not the specific ones. So finding that rare one you absolutely NEED RIGHT NOW can mean some long exploration trips. Which is fine, I guess.

I cannot believe my luck FFS

I am about 5 hours in and loving it. Only issue is I started on a planet which had already been discovered and I am basically following the same path as this other dude.

I figure he is taking the same story path and therefor the same systems as me!!

If I saw the starting planet was discovered by someone else, I'd be starting over right away not playing for 5 hours just saying. I would start over now though.

Guys, probably a dumb question but:

If I have already followed the atlas questline past where I craft my own hyperdrive, and get the antimatter blueprints, etc etc, it's safe to redeem the dlc preorder ship, right?

I want to take a poll because I'm super insecure about my choice and am thinking about changing it (no late-game spoilers please):

Which path are you currently following
in regards to what you tell Polo and Nada when you enter an Anomaly
?

A) Just going to the center on your own dime
B) Using black holes to speed the process
or C) following the path of Atlas

I followed C up to a certain point, then I went off on B for an hour or two, and now I'm back to C. Some of the
flavor text is giving me ominous feelings about that choice though.

I've encountered a big mound of aluminum that I can't mine. How do I cut through this sucker? I've started launching grenades at it with little luck lol

Glad you're enjoying it! My thoughts:

1. It mostly will be an issue with naming things...they were big on you putting your stamp on it. If you bulk upload hardly anyone will even look at the video icons, let alone name stuff. I definitely have looked back at stuff because of this and would totally love a "one button upload".

2. Not sure but you should be looking forward, not back...let go of these planets, they're not yours; you are just passing through!

3. Ok, this one is annoying. I hope this is fixed in a patch. I hate not knowing what I need to drop in order to craft an upgrade.

4. I would also prefer more guidance with the scan...to be honest, as some others have said, I could do with a little more info in general. Not asking to hold my hand but I'm not walking over there for more f'ing iron!

I think you have to upgrade your tool. Mine's upgraded so I can suck up 250 plutomnium in about 10 seconds but it still struggles to extract aluminium.

Why? It is not like the previous player did anything to your world besides naming things.

Found a planet with fire storms that got up to 250C. Could not even walk to far away from my ship! But it had a lot of fauna. Animals everywhere and in the sky flying jellyfish

Yipes! The most extreme temperature I've faced so far is -90c in a snow storm.

I've played about 14 hours so far, got my multi tool up to 25 slots, but I'm headed out on vacation today. I think I'll have to call it quits and start up again when I get back.

Half of the games point is to go out and discover new worlds and civilizations and to boldly go where no one has gone before. So would be a huge bummer to just get into a content loop where all you do is follow someone else doing all the discovering, naming etc.

Just left a planet and was attacked by ships. Couldn't see them with all the asteroid debris and was destroyed. I forgot to check my inventory before turning it off and was wondering if all my items will be lost or are they retrievable?

Strange, I was collecting aluminium with my starter multi-tool the same way I collected any other resource. On one planet it came in huge pillars, and then on the other one it came as big blue spiky crystals, along with red plutonium crystals.

Because everything in the system has probably already been discovered, I know I wouldn't want that for my first experience, and it takes all of a minute to start over.

Shelters.

Although lately the scanners stations are trolling me.

I seelct find Shelters but it just take me to random bases :(

seek out the atlas icon on your radar, it's your grave

Thanks for all these impressions guys. I'm back to being pumped about this game. Out of curiosity, has anyone heard anything on the state of the PC version? Can we expect a good amount of graphics options? 21:9 support? FOV changes?

Edit: Yes 21:9!!!

Anyone seen any issues with trying to get to a beacon and the time seems to go up then down? Had a few beacons where it gets down to a point, but then starts going back up, and I can never get to the thing. Not sure if it's Atlas line related but was looking to get to an abandoned building, but then tried warping to the next system and there were a couple beacons doing the same thing there.

Spent a couple of hours before bed in my 3rd star system.

Damn pirates, died twice exploring an outlying planet. Ended up staying close to the space station and doing recces down to the local major planet, Flume (home of the Staggadom and Octicrabs), mining as much Emeril as possible. Got about 1.2m Units by the time I'd finished.

Warped back to the 2nd star system and waited around in the space station for the right starship to land. 600k units bough me a very Millinium Falcon-eqsue nuts'n'bolt flying freighter. Not a pretty ship, but functional.

Annoying I couldn't transfer the fully powered hyperdrive from my old ship :( Cobbled to together the parts need to make warp cell good enough for a one way trip to a new unexplored 4th system.

My priorities now - Upgrade my new ship against space pirates and fully replenish the hyperdrive. Probably stick around the one planet while I do this before exploring the rest of this system.

Still no Atlas Pass.

Not really following any major lines through the galactic map yet. More a random - lets see whats there. Probably pay more attention on the next couple of jumps and start heading more towards the center..

I'll have to get the pics off the PS4 at some point...

I was following a crash site beacon for a long time. It hovered around 16 mins up and down. I got move elevation, sped up and descended down to the surface and finally found it. It's been happening a lot to me.

Does anyone else want to strangle someone/something when they have 1 species left to find, and it's clearly the birds flying overhead - but you can't scan them?

I literally spent two hours last night (through multiple storms and a handful of sentinel attacks) hopping between two tall bluffs, trying to get close enough to a flock of a dozen birds to scan them.

I tried shooting them for a while, but when they are circling themselves over and over, hitting one is effectively impossible.

I eventually moved on to a neighboring planet, hoping that bird scanning gets patched at some point.

You clicking r3 to zoom while scanning yeah?

It is irritating but I always find a sweet spot around the 2x and 4x zoom and a vantage point. If they are really too high up just leave and look for birds closer to a vantage point. You will find them.

21:9 support and FOV sliders for PC were confirmed by Sean Murray

Q: Will No Man's Sky on PC have FOV options?
A: Innes and Charlie are here working on it right now, but every time someone asks we take away one degree of field of view http://imgur.com/L9CIxSR

I have the PC version pre-ordered on Steam, but this thread is making me want to double dip even though it's just another day of waiting. Fuuuck. I kinda don't want to see it on console for the first time, though. DECISIONS.

I did it the other way around. I've already spent like 20 hours on PS4 and i still wanna play it on PC.

Does the game change in any major ways as you progress or is the gameplay loop basically the same the whole time? cause I think I'm starting to get bored after like 8 hours

Depends entirely on how many systems you have visited. System-by-system the game tends to develop rather than by play time.

I also read a spoiler about journey-end stuff and it sounds pretty interesting.

Thanks! Doesn't seem like I've really missed anything then, some mechanics just aren't quite what they should be (IMO).

Regarding 2: Yes, I know, and that's what I'm planning to do. But I really just wanted to go back there and discover the one remaining planet in the system. And also pay another visit to my starting planet. That planet will always be special, would be a bit like coming home. It's also the only planet I've bothered to name. Can't be arsed to come up with clever names for everything, so I just named my first system, planet, and species. Those are MINE. And I want to see them again. :(

Found a planet with fire storms that got up to 250C. Could not even walk to far away from my ship! But it had a lot of fauna. Animals everywhere and in the sky flying jellyfish

I actually don't really like that aspect. I'm perfectly fine with animals flying who shouldn't be and all that, but planets with such extreme conditions shouldn't have what looks like regular animal and plant life. Just feels a bit too unrealistic. Buuuut whatever, not a dealbreaker.

So I'm still on my first planet, I left and visited a space station just outside of it but then returned back because I wanted to discover all the fauna on the planet. I redeemed the preorder ship though, and I have no idea how to tell if I screwed myself in doing that or not. How do I know if I'm screwed, and is there a way to get around it without having to start a new file?

Strange, I was collecting aluminium with my starter multi-tool the same way I collected any other resource. On one planet it came in huge pillars, and then on the other one it came as big blue spiky crystals, along with red plutonium crystals.

I think it comes in different forms that are of varying difficulty to extract, or I'm thinking of another material.

got in one last hit and run attempt before bed, there was an attack on a freighter or capital ship, all I got was "hostile ships incoming" and I noticed they weren't attacking me, so I ignored the pirates and blew up some pieces of the ship. got two stacks of titanium which sell for +96 in this system. Tidy 100k profit for about 10 seconds of work. If you can really take down the entire ship it must be nuts.

I took off after that score while the sentinel ranking was still 1, and just beelined for the space station. Couldn't pulse at all, but I had endless shields because of the titanium, plus if you weave and roll they'll hit you less, so I made it back pretty easily.

cool thing is I'd never ordinarily try this, it's not my usual playstyle. Just trying it on PS4.

Aw man, my second crash. First one was on the title screen (lol), but I've played about nine hours and didn't get one until now, so I guess I should feel lucky. But I had just found a weird, super-tall antenna, landed to investigate in front of a cave and brrrzzzt freeze.

Are Sony certs quicker when doing updates? I hope Hello can find the source of these crashes soon and get an update out.

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
Flying creatures sure are a bitch to scan...

Sadly I only got to enjoy two days with the game, can't touch it again until Monday night. And I just opened up that branching Atlas path!

Annoying I couldn't transfer the fully powered hyperdrive from my old ship :(
I have real mixed feelings about how you can't move tech between ships or multi-tools. It makes a certain amount of real world sense, but I think it does more to discourage you from investing in updates that might have to be left entirely behind. Especially when they're things that require rare materials and complicated recipes.

I feel like it's filler in the same way that MMOs have filler
someone will argue its a mechanic to make the game feel more real but I'd argue it's solely to make a game longer
