You need a bit of perspective here. The entire time, you're thinking like this issue is happening in the US, and it isn't. Lying to the police is a crime in Brazil and they tend to go after those who lied, at least if it is a case that made the news. That's true for locals and foreigners. Also, it is normal for the police to confiscate the passport of someone they think might leave the country during an investigation. It might look vindictive to an outsider, but it is not to a local.
So you are saying you are so used to the vindictiveness you don't see it anymore. Plus those 2 athletes didn't say anything. They didn't lie.
Well, here they do if it was a famous or rich person saying that to the media, even if no report was filed.
And you admit rich and famous get different treatments. Gross.
