PlayStation 4 Pro Reviews

So I'm gathering the bottom line is:

Big difference on 4k displays, smaller but noticeable difference on 1080p displays?

Worth buying if you have a 4k display, or if you appreciate a slightly cleaner image on your convention monitor/TV.

Right?
Rise of the Tomb Raider, also big difference if you only own 1080p display. Hopefully others will follow with excellent options for Pro like ROTTR does.

I wanted to play Rise of Tomb Raider in 1080p Enhanced Mode, but that 1080p supersampling (4k High Resolution mode) in the DF video is gorgeous .. sharpness and AA at god level... now I don't know what to choose in my first run ...

The majority of people have a 1080p display and are quite content. I feel this 4K push is just unnecessary.

I for one would rather see the capabilities of the console to be spent on density and so forth, rather than resolution.

Still don't know whether to buy one over my current PS4. YouTube comparisons will come extremely handy here.

Asked in the transfer thread but no comments, so trying here.

I deactivated my main PS4 less than 6 months ago so that I could activate on my kid's PS4 to use the Game Share feature.

Now I want to use the ethernet transfer from my main (deactivated) PS4 to my new PS4 Pro. Is this going to be a problem? Does the transfer force you to have all of your PS4's deactivated, and then force you to activate the new Pro?

Crapshit.

I was hoping bigger 1080p benefits.

Mind you I play on a 106" 1080p projector in a dedicated room. I wonder if I will notice it more?

I apologise then.Unfortunately this should be placebo man. No game should benefit from Pro without a patch.Said and confirmed.

That's what I thought too, but explain the differences. Pro looked sharper to me, and several people I showed the footage to.

Can you maybe check if recordings of older games (not Pro patched) are 720p or 1080p? Thanks!

Hahaha! :D All captured at 1080p at the same settings on the Elgato hardware/software

Only 1 PS4 can be the main PS4.

Pro counts as a PS4.

If you play on an obnoxiously large 1080p display you're the first person who should be getting one.

The remaster doesn't run at a stable framerate? What the fuck is this?

It is not all for 4K.

1080p users will greatly benefit from supersampling and better framerates.

When you see a stable picture with cleaned up pixels shimmering, you will never go back and will appreciate the Pro! The image quality step up is like moving from VHS to 480p DVD, everything is just so much cleaner and stable!

I definitely agree with this. If you can't get it at a discount, I would not buy this system if it cost me $400....however at $100 after a -$300 discount....it's a no brainer.

If I was looking to buy a PS4 I would buy the pro to "future proof" myself. 100 bucks difference is worth it.

If you have a PS4, to upgrade you wouldn't keep the old one which makes this more of a 200-250 upgrade not 400.

Since decibels are logarithmic, this means the PS4 Pro is about half as loud as the launch PS4.

Was gonna say this. 6DB is an enormous difference.

Not sure what the argument is here. The C chassis is a big improvement over launch, many sites are even claiming less noise than Slim. To me that means variance. We've seen this with every system. Still, if C Chassis is worst case, we're in good shape.

If you play on an obnoxiously large 1080p display you're the first person who should be getting one.

God yes. At that scale a reduction in shimmer would be very useful.

But are they noticable? I really think Sony got the console name wrong here really. This, to me, seems largely intended for 4K displays.

Should really have been called PlayStation 4K.

Having said that let's see some game comparisons at 1080p. FFXV is the ideal candidate for this!

As expected.

This is still essentially a PS4 in the inside throughout the multiple revisions of PS4 over the past 3 years and the Slim etc Sony learnt the best way to make PS4 Pro efficient in the best design possible so no surprise. :)

As I posted just before, the noise level of the Pro maybe isn't that quiet. Digital Foundry said in their review that it's more like the C-chassis ps4 than the slim. I was hoping for slim quiet. Anyone else picked up on this? It seems to have been missed, so I'll post the quote again.

In terms of the acoustic performance of the Pro, it has much more in common with the c-chassis PS4 than the Slim. We were hoping that the larger console may integrate a larger fan - typically, the larger fan, the slower it needs to spin in order to displace the same amount of heat. We've yet to put the Pro through exhaustive tests here, but we note a peak 55dB during inFamous First Light gameplay, but really it's not so much the loudness that's the issue as opposed to the pitch. The fan spins up and down and is clearly audible from across the room. Initial tests on heat again show a profile similar to the standard PS4. We'll have more on this to share later, but right now, it's fair to say that a fair amount of heat is kicked out of the rear of the unit and in common with any current-gen console, it should not be housed in an enclosed area.

There are noticeable increases at 1080p yes.

German tabloid bild.de also published their review.

http://www.bild.de/spiele/spiele-news/playstation-4/playstation-4-pro-48635666.bild.html

So, first of all, they are obviously no Tech-freaks:

Die Playstation 4 Pro ist neben der Xbox One S die erste Spielkonsole, die Games in UHD-Auflösung darstellt (3840 x 2160).

=> Besides XBOX One S, PS4 Pro is the first gaming console which delivers games in UHD resolution (3840 x 2160)."

Nevertheless, this part of the review was interesting:

They say that PS4 Pro doesn't deliver native 4K in most games, but uses "a graphic trick" (checkerboard rendering) to get there. Interestingly they say that gaming journalists performing a blank test were not able to tell if a game was native 4K or checkerboard rendered before they were a couple of centimeters (!) away from the screen. They say basically no one will able to see any difference if you're 2-3 meters away from it.

As I said, BILD is a tabloid and literally everything they say should be taken with a grain of salt. Yet it's the first time I read something about a blank test. Has anyone here ever heard of something like that? As in, you know, from a reliable source?

Framerate?Especially CQ. Can you try and give feedback please.

Frame rate in the standard wavers a little bit but it was (what appeared to be) a solid 60 on the Pro. Also, when the soldiers in front of you run off into the distance, they stay sharp in the Pro version. It's so weird, I know there shouldn't be differences but there definitely are. It's not as night and day as Titanfall is, but it's there.

Yes it is noticeable!

Not a blank test. Though the DF guys have basically said the same thing about Checkerboard.

Looking forward to some proper 1080p comparisons once all the patches were out.

Only then will I be able to really decide if it's worth upgrading.

Could you upload your recoded footage? Wanna see it with my own eyes. I am really looking forward to playing bf1 on the pro.

I should have been clearer. I meant the PS4s own recording function. According to the FAQ only some games support 1080p video recording. As far as I know no one has tested if that means that games that aren't Pro patched only record 720p still.

https://youtu.be/l0zHHXu_nOY?t=640 That's where the Standard PS4 footage starts - The Pro is a couple of minutes later. (YouTube compression is a bit of a twat though)

Ohhh, sorry! I wasn't aware that only some games supported the 1080p resolution. I'll have a look a bit later :) I did want to do some comparison videos a bit later this week between different capture methods anyway :)

I play on a 1080p 110" projector as well. Do any reviews talk about big projector screens and how much it improves things?

Only in campaign. Multiplayer is stable.
Pretty much for all fps games in Campaign they don't care for stable fps just up the graphics and destruction and things going on at once but nothing too fancy for multiplayer

Same here.

Eagerly awaiting comparison videos of XCOM2, Skyrim, Mafia 3, Hitman and Uncharted 4.

I really want to see XCOM. I somehow don't expect the Pro to unfuck it.

You'll notice it the most. It's why i'm buying the Pro. Because things like jaggies are more visible on the screensize we play on with the projector. Some games are already pretty clean and this gen doesn't really have games anymore where the jaggies are as big as the characters, but any help to clean up the image is welcome. Downsampling is ideal for this.

If the game has a pro patch enabling 4k

Is super sampling as simple as plugging pro in a 1080p but picking to do 4k anyway effectively super sampling it?

Or does it have to be a separate patch and option?

So I ask this because FFXV is confirmed to have a pro patch with 4k, and I want to know of that means it's super sampled for my 1080p tv?

This will determine if I buy it day one or not.

Slim quiet level come on now your being too unrealistic consider the power and hardware inside this, its an impressive feat they achieved. I'm surprised its not much higher as I was expecting tbh

Was checkerboard rendering used in 360 and PS3 games?

Also, is there a Pro patch for Black Ops 3? It's one of the titles listed by CNET.

I may jump on this even though I don't need it at all. Amazon is offering $137 for my OG PS4. That cuts the price down enough for me to move on it.

nah buddy.....that TF2 screenshot told me that owning one for a 1080p display was enough....and that was with no real enhancements like RotTR
