Pokémon Sun & Moon |OT| Ultra Beasts and where to find them

How's the level pacing?

Does it feel like a pretty even curve or any jumps in one gym being like Level 20 and the next being like 28?

Also...do you get Wimpod relatively early on? For some reason I reaally want to get it (whenever I get the game) but hope the team I want isn't reliant on a lot of late game pokes.

The tutorials last waaaay too long, but I am still liking it a lot so far. Probably going to end up better than X and Y overall by quite a bit. I haven't really found any Pokemon I want in my team aside from Eevee though.

There are no gyms. The level curve has been steady so far.

Wimpod is available after the third trial.

I haven't played a Pokemon game since Gold & Silver. Is this one worth picking up? Seems like it might be a good game to go through on my lunch breaks.

Hmm, just got a thunder stone. Trying to decide if I should evolve Pikachu now, or wait until level 42 for thunderbolt. The move re-learner is post game, right?

Man video game journalism has quickly gone to hell. I remember when stuff like this wasn't even news worthy.
I think what makes it a story now could have been how you can't just save right before the choose your starter screen but have to save before a cutscene. I've always thought people SRing for shiny starters are unduly suffering (as masudamethod+shiny charm+breeding is far better odds) but it's one of those start of the gen things and Kotaku aims to get a story out every 30 minutes so there are going to be some regurgitated press releases or stories by twitter.

If the game had I don't know the ability to skip cutscenes it would be more acceptable to go for and the unskippable cutscenes don't just affect this but completely ruin speedrunning this game (I'm sure people will still run it but the result will be uninteresting to watch despite good strategies) and could make replays incredibly annoying as well and that is totally a criticism that should be addressed (but given the glacial pace of changes in Pokemon don't expect it soon).

Just found out Super Training is not in anymore.

What the heck? Why did they remove that?
Poke pelago which can give something like up to 4 EVs every 15 minutes to the up to 18 Pokemon training on that island. Festival plaza which if you get the right stand and keep it could max out two stats once a day.

But just like super training got quickly superseded by hordes, SoS chains (when a Pokemon calls for help) in optimal conditions (pokerus+power item) can have a stat EV maxed in about 8 KOs (ones in the SoS chain give double EVs and the power items give more EVs per Ko than before).

I just spent 50 Ultra Balls trying to catch a paralized 1-HP Beldum, this is getting a bit ridiculous. Well, time to use the Super Balls.
Yep. For whatever reason Beldum has a catch rate of 3.

Other things with the catch rate are like legendary Pokemon (but not the cover legendaries those always have a higher rate...i.e. that's why you don't use the master ball on the cover legendary).

Sleep gives better chance boost than paralyze (plus conserves PP of the enemy a bit better).

I guess the catch rate just stems from the fact that in Gen III it was a gift so the developer never foresaw it being in the wild so the rate didn't matter...then kept adding it to the wild in subsequent generations with no revision and still kept the only move it has as take down which they can KO themselves with :( (a ghost type is a good counter).

Just wasted 6 Pokeballs and 4 Great Balls on a Paralyzed Misdreavus with 10% Hp. Fuck me that was annoying. I haven't seen all that many Alolan Pokemon honestly. Lots of plain old Gen 1 Pokemon like Drowzee and Ghastly so far, but I haven't made it that far into Route 2.

I was lucky enough to have no been spoiled on the Team Skull theme music. Nearly fell over laughing at that. It's nice that everyone in the game seems to be on the same page when it comes to them, i.e. everyone knows they ain't shit.

Update of my Pokemon team, 50 hours in:

Obvious Spoilers, if they give me permission I will remove the spoilers, and let them free.

- Pikachu + Lighting Ball
- Silvally + Fairy Disk
- Marowak + Thick Club
- Greninja (ash) + Z-Crystal
- Necrozma + Twisted Spoon
- Flygon + Z-Crystal

Also I discovered something, go to the supermarket near the Battle Royal Dome, you'll get a coupon, that coupon means you can buy everything there with 50% of discount.

- Buy tons of poke balls for half a price
- Sell them
- Repeat
- You get premiers every 10 poke balls you buy
- Sell the premiers
- You get extra money
- Basically infinite money without even trying but you win 100 pokedolars every 10 premier balls you sell

This new 'call for help' mechanic is wild!

I absolutely love it. It can turn a simple wild encounter into a challenge if you're caught unprepared and try to push your luck. I've fallen victim to the enemies pulling off combos a few times already. The worst was two Spearows using Leer followed by a 5-hit Fury Attack. Grimer didn't live through that one.

I imagine SOS encounters are going to be the death of many Nuzlocke runs.

Someone talk me out of buying this game. Someone? Anyone?

Mudbray is a little beast. First it one shots the fire totem Pokemon and then it tanks a Z move from Fearow thanks to Stamina.

Does Stufful only appear during the day? I'm having no luck encountering one for the side quest.

Mudbray is a beast and will be essential all the way through. I was surprised at that. Even more suprising is how useless Golisopod is. That was disappointing. Mudsdale and Tsareena ended up carrying my useless starter (Incineroar) and the rest through the game. Every second pokemon knowing a water or fighting move + extremely low speed = one dead Incineroar.

Although I did appreciate that all of my pokemon being so slow gave me an extra challenge - I'm totally unused to the AI in the main story getting to go first all the time.

I thought it was hugely disappointing. If you hold on I'll type out my thoughts and convince you not to buy it, lol. Give me a few minutes.

I'm actually pretty shocked at the reception it has gotten. It's like the anti Skyward Sword for me. That was a game I thought everyone would adore, and people hated it. Here, it's the reverse. I'll get to typing my impressions.

Playing with EXPShare off and set battle, still not finding much challenge after beating the first island. This game is so much fun though. Love Alola as a region.

The challenge is only in the major battles (totems and major characters), but at least those ARE a challenge where they used not to be.

I played with exp share off during the first island as well, and found that I was quickly outlevelled and that the game is balanced for it, and turned it back on.

I was also nuzlocking, and died (ended my run) at the 4th totem battle. From that point on I played full strength with my best pokemon, and STILL got wiped another 7 times during the main game and postgame story, which is about 8 times more than I usually wipe during a pokemon game.

Depending on your pokemon team some totems will be easy, 1HKOs and others will require serious strategy or some grinding. For me,
Lurantis
and
Mimikyu
beat the hell out of my team, and the others were easy enough.
