The Last of Us Part II announced

Did a lot of people really not expect this?

My first choice for both hope and expectation would've been something new. Last of Us for some reason feels really old to me like ND needs to move on, though that's not really rooted in reality seeing as there's only been one game. The first game was announced five years ago and I know we're probably not going to see a new IP ND game until like 2020 with the existence of TLOU part II, so I was really holding out hope that wasn't the case.

No way Joel is a ghost in that scene. If they wanted to show something within Ellie's imagination, they wouldn't have him walking through an entire house, rooted away from Ellie's vicinity.

I think trying to draw any major story arcs out of this other than Ellie wanting to kill some people is a fool's errand. And I seriously doubt that they'd go with a ghost/hallucination angle anyway... it isn't really part of TLOU's visual or narrative language.

Plus, it's sort of hackeneyed.

I didn't say it was.
I know. Just saying it could theoretically happen again because Hennig wasn't the problem, ND's management is just shit that reinforces the terrible working conditions of the video game industry and for some reason nobody seems to care much.

Also, one more thing. There didn't seem to be anything going on outside, it looked rather peaceful. All of the action happened inside that house as evident by the bodies. Why would Joel be outside then while Ellie fends for herself inside? He comes inside after everything's happened and then checks on her. A little creepy, but really interesting.
I mean we are assuming that Ellie is the one that killed those people

For all we know they are people Ellie knows killed by others

Ghost? Really Neogaf?

If Joel's fate wasn't supposed to be questioned it will now. This is hype gold and ND will milk it for everything it's worth.

Yeah even if that wasn't their intention I could see Naughty Dog running with this for a little bit just to drive up conversation. I'm sure we'll have an answer as soon as the next trailer hits, but they may let this go on for a bit.

Also this game's development might be a bit smoother than UC4's without Amy Hennig on board
please go easy on me

UC4 probably would have been a better game with the direction she originally envisioned rather than the final product that we got. Some parts were nice but the overall was not something that worked out. Not sure if the whole studio felt it was the kind of direction they wanted for Uncharted but more than a few felt the older ones were more enjoyable and fun.

It is just scene exposition. They want us to see what Ellie did.

They could do that without Joel literally stopping to look. No ghost would do that. If he's in Ellies mind she wouldn't picture him doing that from another room. Ghost Joel isn't happening, sorry. Maybe Joel does die at some point, but you're all jumping to extremes based on this one trailer.

Joel and Ellie relationship post-lie and what has happened since between them versus a variation of everyone's favorite trope of "character death"

Sick crystal ball bro, let me get a chance with it next.

You already had it when you said this was going to destroy the ending of the first game. You're not very good with that thing.

Should have gone with new characters but consumer recognition and marketing demands we keep the old guard.

Or, you, know, they finally found something that worked for Joel and Ellie and went with it. As I said before - where's the faith in ND? Surely after the first game we can give them the benefit of the doubt as good storytellers?

Feel free to never play this game if you think it's going to somehow ruin the first one, though...

You're still wrong, by the way.

I love you too, internet.

Joel's face looks pale as hell and is acting way out of character yet people aren't wondering if he's a hallucination? What reason would they have not to show his face? He's a scruffy old white dude, his face isn't gonna be some grand reveal unless he's dead.

Ghost Joker did all the time in Arkham Knight.

In the grand scheme of things we barely know Ellie. Hell, the character barely knows her self and I'm sure that'll will be a big part of the story here. Any new ground they could explore with different leads they can easily explore with her. Only there's added tension by players already being deeply invested.

We know enough about the leads to be invested, heavily so in fact. I loved the first game, but I felt it ended so well and was so well-contained, and I can understand why some may be feeling a bit deflated; because the first one had one of gaming's truly excellent open-ended endings where you filled in the gaps (that's been taken away somewhat).

I was hoping on hope that the Savage Starlight comics were an easter egg for ND's next project, an ND inspired sci-fi adventure is far more enticing a proposition than TLOU2 if I am being perfectly honest.

What reason? Maybe it's because it's like pre-alpha? Or even earlier than that? Layden did say this was verrrry early.

I'm sorry, but this ghost "theory" is dumb af. Doesn't fit TLOU at all and it makes no sense to see Joel walk in the house and look around before meeting Ellie if so.

Plus the whole "the Main protagonist is hallucinating a person" is a cliche at this point and everyone will see it miles away before the "shocking" reveal. Druckmann and ND would never take TLOU in this direction.

They already lingered on Ellie's turned away face for like 10 seconds, they just know some people have a creepy devotion to these characters and they're milking it.

Or maybe they dont have a finale look for him.

They have a fully working rigged model for Ellie, I very much doubt they don't have one for Joel or one that's so unfinished that they can't show it.

Yes but they still showed it.

They didn't have a final look for Ellie in the debut trailer of the original.

The implication could just as easily be that his character has changed since the last game because Ellie has changed. I'd sooner jump to that than ghost.

The reason they have to not show his face is because it's a teaser trailer that is teasing us things.

actual living characters don't get entrances like that, that is a ghost joel

This sounds like sarcasm to me it's so ridiculous. What?! silhouetted = must be dead?

I really don't know where people are going with this ghost idea.
I mean they took out supernatural stuff out of UC4 .
You think in TLOUP2 they going have a Joel help her and then say it way all in her head ?
This is still going to be a 10 hour plus action game with 2 characters helping each other gameplay .

If we go the wild speculations road, why couldn't he have scars on his face, or a missing eye as well?

Your ears don't function as ears should.
The cadence and tone of "you really gonna go through with this?" is not Joel-esque. The "kiddo" was even pushing it.

I'm not continuing to doubt it's Joel, it's just inconsistent.

And I didn't notice how he sort of materializes at the doorway which is most likely what birthed the ghost theory? Hmmm.

Hallucination makes more sense than something "fantastical" like a ghost. She's (theoretically) hallucinating him walking in, looking at what she's done and talking to her.
