My first choice for both hope and expectation would've been something new. Last of Us for some reason feels really old to me like ND needs to move on, though that's not really rooted in reality seeing as there's only been one game. The first game was announced five years ago and I know we're probably not going to see a new IP ND game until like 2020 with the existence of TLOU part II, so I was really holding out hope that wasn't the case.
No way Joel is a ghost in that scene. If they wanted to show something within Ellie's imagination, they wouldn't have him walking through an entire house, rooted away from Ellie's vicinity.
I think trying to draw any major story arcs out of this other than Ellie wanting to kill some people is a fool's errand. And I seriously doubt that they'd go with a ghost/hallucination angle anyway... it isn't really part of TLOU's visual or narrative language.
Plus, it's sort of hackeneyed.

Yeah even if that wasn't their intention I could see Naughty Dog running with this for a little bit just to drive up conversation. I'm sure we'll have an answer as soon as the next trailer hits, but they may let this go on for a bit.
UC4 probably would have been a better game with the direction she originally envisioned rather than the final product that we got. Some parts were nice but the overall was not something that worked out. Not sure if the whole studio felt it was the kind of direction they wanted for Uncharted but more than a few felt the older ones were more enjoyable and fun.
Then just have the camera swing through the area.
Joel is in the scene because he's real.

They could do that without Joel literally stopping to look. No ghost would do that. If he's in Ellies mind she wouldn't picture him doing that from another room. Ghost Joel isn't happening, sorry. Maybe Joel does die at some point, but you're all jumping to extremes based on this one trailer.

Or, you, know, they finally found something that worked for Joel and Ellie and went with it. As I said before - where's the faith in ND? Surely after the first game we can give them the benefit of the doubt as good storytellers?
Feel free to never play this game if you think it's going to somehow ruin the first one, though...

We know enough about the leads to be invested, heavily so in fact. I loved the first game, but I felt it ended so well and was so well-contained, and I can understand why some may be feeling a bit deflated; because the first one had one of gaming's truly excellent open-ended endings where you filled in the gaps (that's been taken away somewhat).
I was hoping on hope that the Savage Starlight comics were an easter egg for ND's next project, an ND inspired sci-fi adventure is far more enticing a proposition than TLOU2 if I am being perfectly honest.
Or we're just setting ourselves up to be surprised that we're wrong? Not everyone takes their predictions so seriously, lol.

I'm sorry, but this ghost "theory" is dumb af. Doesn't fit TLOU at all and it makes no sense to see Joel walk in the house and look around before meeting Ellie if so.

The implication could just as easily be that his character has changed since the last game because Ellie has changed. I'd sooner jump to that than ghost.
The reason they have to not show his face is because it's a teaser trailer that is teasing us things.

The cadence and tone of "you really gonna go through with this?" is not Joel-esque. The "kiddo" was even pushing it.
I'm not continuing to doubt it's Joel, it's just inconsistent.
And I didn't notice how he sort of materializes at the doorway which is most likely what birthed the ghost theory? Hmmm.

Hallucination makes more sense than something "fantastical" like a ghost. She's (theoretically) hallucinating him walking in, looking at what she's done and talking to her.
