The Last of Us Part II announced

I find the whole "there should have been new characters!" argument really odd. It's not like a TV ensemble drama where the main focus can shift to different characters as the seasons progress- Joel and Ellie were the only fleshed out characters, so jumping to another character we saw in the first game would make little sense.

Also, neither the premise nor the mechanics of The Last Of Us were unique, so a new game with unrelated characters would feel like... another zombie game.

Certainly, argue that Joel and Ellie's story was done, and that they shouldn't have followed up that excellent game. But don't argue for another generic cover shooter zombie apocalypse game, cos what's the point? It's the two leads in TLOU that prevent it being generic.

I think all this speculation to fill a vacuum is kind of hilarious.

"Joel's a ghost, he appears from a white light!"

"Ellie's immunity is wearing off!"

"Joel was murdered by Ellie, now she's crazy!"

"Ellie self identifies as a man!"

"Ellie's a mad dog, Joel's gonna put her down!"

My two cents: maybe you're seeing the end result of an Ellie who grew up denied her big moment, her heroic sacrifice, and the bitterness has been eating her up inside for the last five years. Maybe something happens -- something the remnants of the Fireflies do -- that unleashes Ellie's pent-up anger, makes her lash out in retaliation at an external target for her hatred. Maybe Joel's part in the game is finally coming to terms with what his decisions have turned Ellie into, admitting the truth, and attempting to turn Ellie from a self-destructive path. Maybe Ellie's part in the game is to undergo a journey of forgiveness, of learning to let go of hate, rather than being consumed by it.

Or maybe Joel's a ghost and Ellie wants to be called Elliot.

Thanks for helping to fill more of that vacuum.

A revenge story and continuing with "hate" as central theme is the most boring and mundane thing a video game can chose to do.

Then don't play it and save yourself the worry :)

Now I really have the urge to play some The Last Of Us Part 1.

Maybe I'll start a Grounded run, been waiting to do that.

Perfect christmas game.

I think they should have shown The Lost Legacy before, like at TGA, Playstation Meeting, GamesCon or even E3. TLOU Part II had more impact than this and stole the thunder for this excellent stand-alone sequel.

Amazing amazing trailer...chills man..chills....

Seen some shit. Ellie has some manly ass hands. She's been wrecking fools in the face.

Honestly I thought those were hands of some skinny guy...they don't look like delicate female hands...I guess the shit she has gone through has taken the toll

This is the only game I really can't wait to play on day 1

Most videogames when stripped down in reductive ways sound boring and mundane. That's not exactly insightful.

Thanks for your riveting contribution. Have a great day.

Your tears bring me joy

Wow y'all sure do take this seriously. Calm
Down. Just voicing my personal disappointment. I'm sure the game will sell boatloads regardless. Or is saying "I'm disappointed" no longer allowed in these here discussion boards?

The Division really did a number on you didn't it? :D

How the hell does this have absolutely anything to do with The Division? I'm perfectly satisfied with how that turned out thanks very much.

Whats wrong with joel filling a role like dexter's dad? A fictitious memory of the character as a guardian when they themselves are more flawed than the protagonist they try to help?

You're just used to seeing shitty "ME ANGRY KILL THINGS NOW" versions of it. Naughty Dog will approach it with nuance.

So god damn ready. Just beat the first one for the first time ever a couple of months ago and it is by far one of my favorite gaming experiences in a long while.

I understand why people are leery about another Joel/Ellie story. But did we really think that after the events of the first game they would just live out their days peacefully? In that kind of world? Obviously there is more story there. Ellie in particular has so much potential story in front of her, her life had barely just begun in the first game.

I've seen a lot of people saying this is only happening because they want to make money or whatever. Here's Neil from the TLoU Grounded documentary. Before they knew how the game would be received critically or commercially

"The thing that was intruiging to me after the fact, is knowing that we're kind of creating a female action her in a way. And this is her origin story."

https://youtu.be/R0l7LzC_h8I?t=657

The idea of continuing with Ellie was always something they were thinking about. It's not a coincidence that every single TLoU story so far revolves around her (American Dreams, TLoU and Left Behind).

Outside of the first 2 hours, the first had really great pacing and story to gameplay ratio.

I really hope Druckmann takes U4 criticism to heart and doesn't overdue narrative or walking segments at the expense of pacing.

I mean U4 is my GOTY but the pacing was it's weak point. Basically be like the first lol.

I think all this speculation to fill a vacuum is kind of hilarious.

"Ellie's a mad dog, Joel's gonna put her down!"

I would fucking love for this to happen.

Joel: "Ellie your a lose cannon!"

Ellie: "
You killed that whole firefly base even the doctors!
"

Joel: "
That was different tho...
"

Please no ghost dad. Ghost Joker was bad enough in Arkham Knight.

You're just used to seeing shitty "ME ANGRY KILL THINGS NOW" versions of it. Naughty Dog will approach it with nuance.

Considering the continuation of Uncharted, I have not a good feeling about this. Sometimes you just can't replicate that lightning in a bottle moment.
