Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

It would be nice to compile all of this info into the OP... with some of the most common asked questions. I feel like these pop up every now and again.

Not that i mind answering the questions tho.

So, I got my 43X800D and tried HDR.

I tried Last of Us, Final Fantasy XV, infamous first light, Last guardian. Until know I'm a little bit disappointed. I used the guide in this thread an activated HDR for 4K and it clearly is activated.

It would be nice if there was a way to activate and deactivate HDR inhale on the fly.

Yup. It is pretty much why I don't really want to post anymore. The same questions have been answered dozens if not hundreds of times. I love helping out too but only so many times can something be asked.

That's my problem too. It's hard to summarize all Infos over so many posts.

Yea. You've been a hero here replying to so many questions. But like you said, most of them are the same question that could've been avoided if looked through the thread, or even a few pages back.

Still, i like helping but we should either make a wiki, or add it to the OP with the most frequent questions asked. Then we can just refer people to the OP.

Are you talking about motion smoothness. Yeah, it's great that it fakes 60 fps but I heard it's bad for lag. Are you saying the increase in lag using that isn't that bad?

I could see myself turning it on for less twitch based games like The Last Guardian or FFXV.

1080p @ 60Hz Show Help : 33.3 ms
1080p With Interpolation Show Help : 49.1 ms
1080p @ 60Hz Outside Game Mode Show Help : 49.0 ms
1080p @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4 Show Help : 33.3 ms
4k @ 60Hz Show Help : 35.3 ms
4k @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4 Show Help : 35.3 ms
4k @ 60Hz + HDR Show Help : 33.2 ms
4k @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4 + HDR Show Help : 33.2 ms

Rtings only mentions interpolation at only 1080p resolution. But interestingly, the jump in input lag isn't that bad. On many TV's, turning interpolation on increases input lag to 90ms+. I'll try it out with FFXV, see if I can feel the lag.

Yes, the increase in lag when MotionFlow is turned on is negligible in the X800D. It's not bad at all. It's actually amazing. Sony's interpolation wizardry is several classes above Samsung's implementation (>100ms lag is unplayable). It's great in making these games run smoother:

- Steep
- Ratchet & Clank
- Uncharted 4
- The Last Guardian
- NBA 2K17 (MotionFlow makes it even smoother)
- Xenoblade Chronicles X
- Mario Color Splash
- Zelda Wind Waker

BTW, here's a video review of the X800D.

Infamous First Light lets you turn HDR on and off in the menu. It's kinda meh in terms of implementation.

Ratchet and Clank is the best HDR enabled game I've seen.

Hey there folks.

I'm having issues with HDR on my XBO S. I have the 43" model of this set.

Basically, games in HDR mode look really colourless and washed out on XBO. I've tried Gears 4 and Forza Horizon 3. Gears looks especially bad, like completely ruined in terms in image quality with it on.

However, HDR through my PS4 Pro or PC (Shadow Warrior 2) both look great. Not washed out, colours pop nicely, no issues. This is with the same TV settings (mostly rtings settings) and is true across all inputs.

Am I missing something? I've messed around with XBO settings (limited vs full, 8 bit vs 10 bit, etc) but I just cannot make it look good.

Does hdr just suck on XBO or am I missing something? Others are saying both these games look great in hdr so I'm sure it isn't that it just sucks.

What's your brightness setting in HDR mode?

The TV automatically maxes it out when it goes to HDR for me.

I tried seeing what decreasing it looks like but it just made it look even more muted, tbqh.

Hmm. It does get notably darker on my set to using the Xbox One but the colours still look great. I had previously tried the rtings settings and didn't really like them. I am on the 49" though so it's a different type of panel.

If anything your IPS panel should give a more muted look, while his VA panel should be giving the better picture.

People also need to know it depends on game to game. But yes, when using HDR enabled content, backlight needs to be max. Apparently that's true for really all TV brands.

Also, make sure your RGB settings on the TV is on auto, as it is on the PS4 video settings.

Is your Xbox One S connected to the TV at either HDMI port number 2 or 3?

Make sure your Xbox One video settings are set to RGB TV. Not RGB PC. RGB PC is notorious for giving the Xbox One crushed blacks. Even if your TV is on RGB Full to match.

Yes to everything you've said - It's in port 2, backlight is maxed, xbox one isn't set to RGB PC, and the TV settings are on auto

I got these. I got them for each of my consoles and my PC. They have been pretty awesome so far.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NQ9OQU2/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Got them on a good sale, i think for 5 of them i only paid 10 bucks.

Thanks. Item currently unavailable but will make note of the specs.

On another note(multiple notes):

1. does anyone have any experience with the archos media player for nas on the google app store on the set? I downloaded it to stream stuff off my nas, which works great on *.avi's. For other encoded formats, I can either pay for the archos app to unlock the codecs or download a free one, not from archos that unlocks all of them. It has 1mil plus downloads. Is the free one safe to install?

2. How can you enable motionflow universally for all inputs? specifically when i'm using google cast, youtube, archos app etc. I looked in the manual but I can't see to find it.

I guess since this is an Android OS I will need to sideload the Amazon Video Player?
No, it comes with a native Android TV Amazon Prime Video app if that is what you're talking about. Supports 4K HDR too unlike when it's sideloaded on other devices (like Shield TV)

Ah. This is the problem. I am in Canada so by default it wasn't available since we didn't have Amazon Video when it release. Now that Amazon Video is available in Canada there is no app.

I wonder if they will patch it in with a firmware update. I want that 4k HDR.

I have both side by side for co-op gaming. My fiance uses the x800d, and I use the ks8000 because I have an Xbox s for hdr. Both are nice, Sony is built better and studier. The ks8000 is very bright and does seem to have a better HDR picture. With that being said, it's not worth the extra 400 it cost me for the ks8000, as the Sony looks just as nice for the most part.

Thank you, this is really helpful (as well as the other comments that replied to my question about KS8000 vs x800D).

I have decided to go out and buy the x800D today! Woohoo! If I'm using an OG PS4, do I need an HDMI 2.0 or whatever cable for HDR?

Yea, be sure to also use ports 2 or 3 and turn enhanced mode on in the settings.

Just bought one of these things. Was looking for something around 40 inches, sounds like this will do the trick. Now I have to pick up a ps4. I'm excited to dive into the 4k world, hoping it will work out with my PC as well.

Does anyone keep HDR mode on at all times? Is there any drawback to doing so?

Where is the setting to do this?

Please do not do this. It will completely ruin image quality for any and all SDR content.

The content (signal source) ITSELF must send the HDR flags, as they require differently mapped electro-optical transfer functions and color container.

HDR should only be manually set 'on' only in cases of incompatibilities or test signals.

It should be auto (which is default) always.

Did you guys buy it on a sale? $650 is too much.

Yup just bought mine today from Best Buy! $650. Well $700 after taxes (Arizona). The cheaper I've ever seen this tv was $600 around black Friday on Amazon.

Any tips and trick from fellow X800D users I should know about (besides the ones in the OP)?

If you don't use the tuner (I get NO signal at all in my area) does it nag you? I had a TV once that prompted you to tune it in every time you turned it on, and it required several button presses to dismiss it.

Not at all. If I didn't know better, I wouldn't even know the TV had one :p

Keep in mind, for 500 dollars cheaper it actually does some (video game important) things better than the Ks8000.

The big one is 13ms pixel response time versus 18ms (this is crucial especially for VA panels regarding pixel color transition times). Most importantly applied during fast camera movements (i.e, video games and sports).

Geez...I finally figured out how to play The Grand Tour on my XBR43X800D in proper Ulta HD.

My reaction:

Okay so I just bought this TV and I have to say I'm not impressed really.

I followed the guide settings on the first page and I really don't see a difference at all with HDR ON. I tried UC4 and Infamous First Light. It's almost like it looks sort of... washed out?? Idk it just doesn't make me go "wow". I tried the 75" version at my friends house and I could tell the difference with HDR on UC4 as off it looked like it bad.

The TV is updated, the brightness is set to MAX when HDR is on and enhanced HDMI is turned on for ports 2/3.

PS4 is set to auto on everything and it says HDR supported 2k/4k 60hz.

Any help?

So for those wondering, I tried the advanced calibration settings that rtings posted, and even though they warn that settings may be different panel to panel, following their advanced color adjustment created a picture for me. The reds and oranges no longer look so saturated. Try it out.

http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x800d/settings

Keep in mind their brightness setting of 1 is an unlikely fit for you. Since that's calibrating at a room that's near absolute dark. I have mine at 25. And of course it should go to max when playing HDR enabled content.

Do you have a 43" VA or a 49" IPS panel?

I did the same on the 43" VA and it was way off, worse than uncalibrated, and I have test equipment - so take this with a grain of salt - sure, give it a try - but your mileage may vary.

Okay. So, a person with this TV made a separate thread saying that they don't notice the HDR. It seems this person had the same "bug" I had. Ultimately, you know HDR is coming through when you see the little "HDR" symbol when you check your picture settings while HDR software is on/enabled. Before I fixed the problem, I did not have this HDR symbol show up, giving me the false impression that HDR was on, when it was indeed not. I don't know who's at fault, the TV or the Pro in communication. Luckily, once I fixed it, it's fixed. No problems.

Anyway, observe. You should see the HDR symbol. If you do not see this HDR symbol, you are not getting HDR.
