Would you ever consider abandoning consoles entirely for PC in the future?

Uh, maybe? The hardest part is getting me into a PC. Which is probably going to happen this year so I can play VR Fallout (and other VR stuff but Fallout is a game good enough to convince me there is at least one thing I really want to play on VR).

Nah, I do play some PC games but I'm not interested in the AAA market so it's really rare to turn it on for gaming.
I think my last played AAA PC game was Borderlands 2.

this could happen to me indeed.

if I was less lazy and did what's required to connect my PC to my TV, I migh have done that already... Well, there are still some nice PS4 exclusives that I'd miss if I went full PC

my dude

You have a PSO avatar. For the most part, PC gaming is only a minefield if you're trying to do very specialized things that can only be done on PC, like play the most comprehensive version of classic PSO online in 2017.

GENERALLY, if you just want to play modern games using nice, high-end hardware, PC use is pretty easy. Not console easy, but easy enough to be worth it for most enthusiasts.

True enough. I would never abandon consoles entirely (which is what the thread is about) though. I have a decent pc and love playing wow and pso2 on it. However my experience with PC is rough compared with consoles, however I wont go into it as there are too many people in this thread who need to defend their beloved PC gaming habits over anything else, and so whenever something negative is said they have to shit on consoles. Gaf all over :(

Of course, and I already am. A PC can do just about anything. The only reason for me to own a console is for an interesting exclusive, and not only are console exclusives becoming rarer than they've ever been, but there are hardly any ones left that are interesting to me.

Well, I don't want to. There's still so much stuff that doesn't reach PC. And especially Nintendo scratches different kind of itch than PC for me. Been playing PC only this gen so far, but looking forward to Switch. That being said, if Switch doesn't deliver I'll stick with only PC for now. Scorpio doesn't interest me either.

Aside from my 3DS, I've been strictly PC gaming for years. Can't see myself going back. Aside from exclusives like Bloodborne idc about what they offer. Would rather splurge on a new mobo+cpu or on cheap games.

For me, it's all but a certainty.

Sony has indicated to me with its iterative hardware business model and paid online multiplayer that it doesn't want my business. Nintendo continues to make hardware with features that I have no interest in but expects me to pay for the excessive cost of them (as well as buying a normal controller separately) thereby making it a poor value. Microsoft's Halo-Gears-Forza (and Fable) treadmill turned me off from their offerings mid way through the 360's life cycle and I've had little reason to give them another look -- and even if I did I guess all their games will be on PC now anyway.

I have limited time for gaming. Having one, modular platform that covers the most bases is the way to go, so console manufacturers are going to have a tough time earning my business from here on out. Designing consoles that directly oppose my wants/use case ensures that I won't buy on hype alone. They'll have to do it with exclusives. Nintendo should have the inside track there, but for me their classic franchises peaked in the SNES days. (although, I do adore MK8 so there's a glimmer of hope) However, if Sony makes another game with Miyazaki I'll play it by any means necessary.

Entirely? No, probably never happen. Although I don't care too much for a lot of Sony's first party offerings in the PS4 era, PS family consoles still get the majority of niche Japanese releases, which all but ensures my support. And I find I need a Ninty system of some sort each generation so I get to play some of their sterling output (last gen I had a 3DS, and I'm getting a Switch).

But without a doubt, my PC will be my primary gaming system moving forward, with a Playstation as the secondary and Nintendo hardware as the portable.

Not abandon but make PC my multi platform machine and leave consoles to exclusives and the random games I play with friends, co workers, etc.

No one in my circle would ever get a gaming PC. Ever since the reveal of MGS V for PC I was in awe of how good PC games can look.

Cant wait to build my first one too.

I'm almost there now. There are still just enough exclusives and shoddy PC ports that keep me on the console train for now.

Yes, Steam trading cards are my lifeblood. Games that don't have them are a waste of time, honestly.

I was going to read this as a troll then I checked and I've made enough cash on Steam Cards since June 2013 to offset the cost of buying a PS4

So I guess I like Steam cards too.

No, I think playing hunched over a monitor with a mouse and keyboard for long periods of time is uncomfortable. I used to have a desk job so coming home to stare at a computer screen was the last thing I wanted to do in my free time. Also I'm not into upgrading every year or two just so I can enjoy the latest games at their best. Not hating on PC gamers or anything like that, I just find relaxing on the couch or upstairs in my room with a controller in hand to be the most comfortable way to play.

Yes I also play on my TV using a controller.

And no, I don't want to pay extra for steam link or run cables to hook up my PC to the TVs in my home. Consoles are plug in and play, no hassle involved.

It's true that you do need to buy an HDMI cable to hook a PC up to a monitor or TV if your monitor or TV does not come with an HDMI cable.

I'm almost there now. There are still just enough exclusives and shoddy PC ports that keep me on the console train for now.

When people talk about "shoddy PC ports", it's almost never that the PC port is worse than the console version, it's that it's insufficiently better. Like, one thing that makes a shoddy PC port is being limited to 1080p60, when the equivalent console version might be 900p30. I can't think of the last PC port that has been worse than the console version at the same settings, maybe Saints Row 2?

If all Sony and an Nintendo games came to pc and they streamline it so much that I NEVER have to download a missing plug in.
Never have to use a mouse at all ever.
Never have to deal with more than one store front for any games.
Never have to deal with modders/hackers unless it's In games atleast 2 years old.
Never have to do ANY even tiny quick it's simple bro technical fixes at all I'd be on the PC train.

Maybe I'll consider it when Sony and Nintendo start porting all their exclusives to pc day and date with the console versions. Even then I would hate to go almost entirely digital as is the way with pc software nowadays.

Nah. I like Japanese games too much for that to ever happen. :p

I have a gaming PC and I hardly use it now, just for browsing GAF and MAME/emulators and the like. I still don't think it was wasted, because I still have the tech for when I need it, but most of my gaming is retro these days, with a bit of PS4 and 3DS thrown in.

Given that, and also given that the Switch is coming soon, why would I limit myself to PC only?

I already made the jump around the time Halo Reach released.

Console exclusives just aren't worth a $400+ machine anymore (IMO, obviously).
It's really hard to game at sub-1080p nowadays too, after playing everything at 4k.

There are plenty of coop games on PC, pretty much everything works with a controller, I can multitask, etc. PC gaming is just far too compelling compared to consoles nowadays.

But I'll admit it's not for everybody. I love the extra freedom PCs allow, as far as tinkering goes. I know lots of people hate it, but that's what makes PC gaming stand out to me.

And, of course, mods.

Nah. A significant portion of my game purchases are physical copies, not to mention still wanting to play with my buds on their respective consoles and hardware wise I end up owning everything anyway eventually.

Witcher 3 at 60fps.
Skyrim at 60fps.
Dishonored DE at 120fps.
Deus Ex: HR at 120fps
Hitman at 90fps.
Civilization VI at 60fps.
DOOM at 100fps.

Don't think I could go back.

I already have this gen.
Consoles have spent the last 12 years shedding more and more advantages they had over gaming PCs(instantly playing without installation, mostly bug free releases at launch, consistent hardware over a generation).
Seriously the only two major advantages left are price and high budget exclusives(though PC kind of makes up for the last one by having lower budget exclusives from genres you barely ever see on console).

Yes I also play on my TV using a controller.

It's true that you do need to buy an HDMI cable to hook a PC up to a monitor or TV if your monitor or TV does not come with an HDMI cable.

Why should I purchase an extra long hdmi cable just to play games on my TV or upstairs? That is not convenience to me. PC hardware is more expensive and requires you to update frequently. Last generation lasted what, 8 years? How many times did you buy new parts or build a new rig? I bought a 360 once and could play everything I wanted. Same for my Wii. You might argue that console are trending towards regular hardware updates but PS4 Pro is not required to play any of the games and from what I understand (correct me if wrong) has sold relatively poorly.

That's fine if PC gaming works for other people but I would probably quit gaming if consoles went away. PC doesn't get 1st party titles which alone is a reason not to use it as a primary platform IMO.

What do you mean by that when talking about PC:s? Microsoft first party titles are on PC. And if you just mean exclusives, then I'm even more confused. This year there was Civilization 6 and Tyranny for example, both heavy hitters and not just niche indie games. If we would go just by quantity, PC would have the most exclusives.

I am actually already sort of doing this. The last console I bought was a PS3, which I got for my nephews. If it wasn't for the 3DS, I might have totally abandoned console gaming forever. I'm on a wait-and-see attitude with the Switch. As for PS4 and Xbox, I lost interest in them years ago.

Man, gaming PCs are annoying. A perfect example of how consoles are better is what I just encountered right now. Maybe 1 out of 5 times I launch Batman The Telltale Series in Steam Big Picture Mode, the Windows 10 task bar will be overlaid on top of the game at the bottom of the screen. It doesn't always happen, but it does happen every now and then and crap like this on a gaming PC is why the experience is just not as good as a console. The only way to fix it is to quit the game and relaunch it. This is just one of a million quirks with gaming PCs. I appreciate the performance, but I hate the experience.

It depends on where the JRPGs go to. I mostly game on PS4 now because thats the main source of them with FFXV and Kingdom Hearts coming out soon (amongst others).

If they were to jump to PC (like I can see FFXV and beyond doing), then I would probably follow suite. It would also help if PC got more universal controller support for all games so no extra configurations or tampering is required.

I only own a gaming PC right now, and I haven't owned a console since the PS2. But this is not a platform war thing, a friend just borrowed me his PS3 so I'm checking out what I missed. It's just that I prefer PC only games, and need a PC for work. Buying another box just for gaming for a couple hundred dollars just for the few exclusives I might like is a bit spendy for me.
I'll likely remain PC only in the future.

No, because Nintendo (and a much lesser extent Sony). Unless Nintendo goes third-party...

so in other words: never.

but how?

Steam cards are literally like a dime a dozen these days. Do you get the rarer ones that are still worth a decent amount or do you just gather so many that you're able to earn that much through sheer volume?

this bullshit reads straight from 2005.

hell, even the "consoles are plug and play, no hassle involved" bit is false nowadays

I don't know how much I made, but it'll usually be enough to buy a new EU4 expansion every two month or something like that. I just sell what I have since the last sell. Most of the money comes from booster packs for me.

This was bullshit in every possible era. Standard adulation for console gaming and docking PC using standard internet forum words. The "i work at a desk all day so i wanna relax at home" standard reply always cracks me up. Its always the same words, in the same wording and most likely bullshit in 99% of cases.

I'll never play PC games at a desk, so this month I opted for a console-like PC

I just got an Alienware Alpha 2 which feels a lot like an overpriced PS4 Pro in terms of game performance, and the experience is anything but console-like. I'm very glad I have it but it'll be hard for me to switch by ack.

Some things the PC is still lacking in :

  • gamepad support for all games
  • navigate ALL content easily with a joypad
  • easily handling extra users/saves
  • 4 controllers work fine in all local games
  • plugging headphones into the DS4 to automatically switch audio
  • installed games run without extra first time hassle of VC extension downloading and settings menus

There are some benefits to PC gaming, but I'm really looking forward to PS4 and Switch this year for a less bumpy experience.
