Horizon Zero Dawn - Preview Thread [Up: All Previews Live]

PS Access 3 minute PS4 Pro footage

How the fuck are they doing this? It has to be the same kind of tricks Naughty Dog does to make a game look more expansive than it really is. Like the trees in the background might even be just a static image, and the clouds and mountains might just all be a flat skybox as well. You can't have a game that's drawing that many things in real time, with that kind of foliage, and looking that good running at 30fps on the current consoles. The trees aren't moving either, and they wouldn't stop moving in TW3. Youtbue compression made it hard to tell if it was just compression artifacts or if the trees were moving. Looks like quite a few of them are, but many aren't.

edit: looking at the clouds more closely, that seems to be exactly what's going on. So if that's what they are doing, I wonder how much of the game really will be more than just these tightly packed, "kind of wide" corridor or dead end valley areas that make the game look a lot more open than it actually is?

Decima. Can't wait for Death Stranding.

Alright, dipped my toes in to these previews to get the gist of the impressions and now i'm stepping out. Nothing good can come from being spoiled. Absolutely thrilled that this sounds like it might meet my already high expectations.

This, Mass Effect and MLB: The Show within weeks of one another is just about as good as it gets and the main reason I picked up the Pro along with a KS8000 TV.

Well, it's not really a stable 30 FPS from what I understand.

That PS Access video on 7 things you must do in Horizon Zero Dawn is awesome, but I would avoid it if you want to go in completely spoiler free.

Best part of the video for me is just how awesome it is to see the "old world" meeting the "new world". Seeing structures that we know as common being destroyed and abandoned while seeing nature overtaking them is damn cool.

Sweet lord it all looks and sounds so good, and those photo mode shots...I'm going to get a lot of mileage out of this game.

So is the spear the only melee weapon in the game? If so that is kind of disappointing, was hoping for a wide variety of melee weapons, don't want this to be 99% bow shooter.

it seems alright, i get the feeling this might feel really dull and formulaic partway in like a ubisoft open world game. hopefully that's not the case.

This is exactly what I'm concerned about. Hell, even "better" open world games like The Witcher 3 lost me after a while. That's the one thing which prevents this from being a day one purchase for me. I'm gonna be playing the shit out of Mass Effect for a long time most likely, so I can wait until after that for this, if I'm still interested.

Side note, why is there a backlash whenever somebody says it looks like a Ubi game? I mean, it objectively does in various ways. (Most) people aren't just saying this to troll/hate on the game. But there ARE reasons to be at least slightly skeptical, including the potential Ubi elements and the fact that this is the Killzone team which has never tackled this type of game.

Photomode ToD change. Also nice for watching the cloud-lighting change quickly and dramatically!

Wow didn't know you had that much control in photo mode. Does that mean the game snaps back to the time of day you were at originally when starting photo mode once you exit?

Want to watch everything but Kind of funny summarized the preview the first minute: Its fucking awesome. No need to watch or read anything more.

It's not just the Killzone team though, they got tons of people on board from other studios, including Bioware, Blizzard and CD Projekt RED.

The combat variety is what is going to set this apart, imo. Setting traps is novel and looks engaging.

This thread changed tone once the positive previews started to roll. And as I expected a lot of people stoped posting. Go figure.

Sucks that this is coming out in March. Switch and Zelda have priority. To the wishlist it goes, crossing my fingers I get to play it before the end of the year!

You're not exactly the poster child for non bias.

I am pretty sure all the landscape shown in the videos is modelled...there is likely to be reduced detail in stuff that you can't access like some of the higher mountains that have no gameplay role. As for the clouds, I thought they were simulated. There isn't really a decently long view of them in that video to make out. However, in earlier tech footage they seem to have quite an advaced cloud system going on.
