Horizon Zero Dawn - Preview Thread [Up: All Previews Live]

The Order was incredibly linear and had letterbox bars. U4 looks impressive in many parts, but still feels like it's running on the PS3 engine underneath it all. And Driveclub looks good but feels like it's all smoke and mirrors.

Horizon is on another level, it's open-world. There's no smoke and mirrors. It's all there, it's real and you can go wherever you like. And the character models look sublime. So yeah, I stand by what I said.

Pffft! Your quite critique..... first of all there is nothing wrong with all of those games, being a specific GAMEPLAY DESIGN doesnt take away how amazing looking and polished they are.

What you said literally gets said about every game with impressive visuals during the hype train.

I'm super happy that the combat seems great. It's really important to nail that considering the main bulk will be hunting these beasts. Really happy with that.

You guys know you can link to a certain time in the video by right-clicking and "copy url at current time" right? Makes it easier for people, especially if it's a longer video.
That doesn't always translate well on mobile, so I'd say do that but also include writing something like "check out this part at 1:45," as well.

Yea...

Witcher 3, AC:Unity

FFXV also. I mean, this game I would say looks more impressive than any of these, but all these open world games look better than any linear game of last gen and they are open world. The difference here, I feel, is this can compete with any linear game in terms of its up close visual fidelity.

I wouldn't, especially after seeing Unity maxed on PC. Can't a game look amazing without putting to shame something equally as good?

I want to explore that part of the mountain:

In the Zelda thread someone was saying Zelda's open world was better since there was cool stuff in the distance you'd want to explore. Don't want to bring that shit in here, but it's nice to see Horizon has some interesting landmarks as well.

I have purposefully avoided to read most previews, but do they comment on variation? I've watched some of the gameplay clips, and while the core gameplay seems solid, I fear the game will lack longer-term variation and hooks to keep the player engaged.

what do you mean by long term variation? any example from other open world game?

for now, Horizon rely on the combat mostly. there are good variety of robots to fight, and they can change up the encounter later in the game, like you think fighting your first sawtooth is challenging? try fighting 4 sawtooth next when you're higher level and have stronger gear. that kind of combat scenario is what will hopefully keep the game fresh.

also apparently the story and lore are interesting enough that I're read more than a few preview said that they really got into the story and want to know more. so hopefully the story will be good enough to at least keep you engaged throughout the whole game

Are there any high quality downloads of footage out there? It's a shame Digital Foundry or Gamersyde doesn't seem to have attended.

No and they won't be able to anyway, given they've only played 4 hours and has not seen enough get a feel if it's sufficient to carry the long-game.

Can you kite Dinorobo? Like bring them into village to cause chaos, or bring 5 thunderjaw together and kill the frame rate.

You beat me to it, especially after the Zelda comparison thread where that one guy pointed out that something very similar in the distance was somehow to be interpreted of Zelda having a vastly more interesting world.

Zelda fans need something to make that barren world look remotely interesting. Funny how that was the big fear for Horizon.

If you are addressing this to me, then I think you have made a mistaken accusation. If not, then that is fine.

I do disgaree with the first proposition...other than the nice texture detail on the interiors, which looks excellent, I can't see how Unity looks as good as Horizon, let alone better. But by all means, it is fine if you think differently.

There was a preview where someone scanned a Thunderjaw and it said "override: locked", which confirms that he can be overriden, we just don't know how he'll function.

No i wasn't talking about you, it's more about something i see pretty often around here. Case in point, the other guy i quoted who was downplaying Uncharted 4, The Order and Driveclub's technical achievements.

I dunno man.

The game certainly looks drop-dead gorgeous at times, but I just don't find the gameplay all that appealing or unique. It looks like a third person Far Cry game with a cool aesthetic, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it's not something I'm THAT excited about.

It was me who said it was a rollercoaster but having seen that picture above I'm not so certain now. I still wouldn't discount it though.
