Multiple reports of joycon connectivity issues in Switch previews

It is overreacting if this issue will be solved and therefore not affect anyone. That's part of the purpose of having a number of review consoles sent out.

I'd still wait for confirmation that this guy is legit though.

C'mon, we're less than 10 days away. How are they going to fix this if it's a hardware issue? Really how? Of course people are rightly concerned.

He's knows someone who has a contact so he gets third hand information. This has lead to him making shit up like when he knew who the next smash rep was and that they'd be revealed soon... because he heard shovel knight was getting an amiibo and filled in the rest with his speculation. When people called him out on it after the fact he blocked them. Thats the kind of person stealth is.

Well no thanks then.

We emailed Nintendo about it and just received a boilerplate "Keep you posted".

I'd rather they've said something like we've acknowledged it and on it or something.

Hey MHWilliams, ol' buddy ol' pal, can you reproduce the problem with the charging grip?

Would also like to see what happens if one puts the dock behind something. Was planning on putting it behind my TV (I can access it easily from the side) and I am concerned it will have issues.

C'mon, you should know better than to throw out a random tweet as fact. Seemingly everyone on Twitter inflates the truth to varying degrees, and it sounds like this person is no different.

I can't see myself covering up a joycon with my hand to block the signal ever, but it would be nice of Nintendo to fill us in.

Because we don't know if it's a hardware issue, it could be solved in the day 1 update. It's overreacting to cancel your pre-order before we've even heard a statement from Nintendo.

Yeah people need to chill. We have no idea how widespread or fixable this is yet. Just wait.

Well that's for people to decide if they're comfortable parting with their money or not after knowing this issue.

I remember seeing a video a couple weeks ago on YouTube about Switch impressions but can't seem to find it in my YouTube history.

In the video the guy goes on stage and is competing in Mario Kart 8 against another adult. He was standing on the opposite side of the projector screen to the console and he was thinking the controls seemed really off, attributing it to the auto driving or whatever they put in there to make it more casual friendly. Later the Nintendo reps move him closer to console and it controls as expected but it's too late and he loses.

Then the Nintendo reps feel bad for the guy so he gets another go and then that time destroys a 7 or so year old kid at the game.

At the time I just put it up to all the wireless interference in those places (it's not like previous consoles always have perfect on stage presentations) but thinking back to it might be related to this issue.

I remember that video as well. Can't remember the Youtuber, though.

Was that from the Linus Tech Tips channel? Think I saw the same video.

So they knew about it...

Well that's for people to decide if they're comfortable parting with their money or not after knowing this issue.

I mean, if it comes to be March 1st and we still haven't heard anything I'll be much more worried and understanding of people canceling preorders. But so far it hasn't even been a day since this issue was first reported, so I'm willing to give Nintendo a bit of time to figure out their response. It's a bit of an overreaction to make a decision like canceling a pre-order before even hearing what the cause of this is and how it may be remedied.

But this is the Internet. Bombastic reactions is how things work around here.

NOA? More like DOA? Am I right?

So what if this can't be fixed via firmware? Is this another red ring right out of the box?

No.

If this isn't something that can be fixed via firmware, it's an issue. A big issue for some people.

But the RROD literally made systems unplayable. (And 360 survived it.)

So they knew about it...

Hummm, They know about this.

It's not exactly a smoking gun. Wireless tech weakens the further you are from the device your sending your signal to. That's always going to be a factor. Like I said, Luke was a good 15 feet from the system, it's not crazy that at that distance the signal was dropping. Especially in an environment with tons of wireless activity and potential interference compounding the issue.

It's likely the same basic issue we are seeing now, but the current case with the preview units could be the result of something else that is exacerbating the issue, which wasn't really an issue previously, which is why this one instance with Luke is the only real case we have of this prior.

So they knew about it...

Hummm, They know about this.

In fairness, that's jumping to conclusions. In that video he explains that they move him closer because they think there's wireless interference from other devices at the event.

It's possible they did actually believe that: I don't think it's likely that promo people at an event will have been briefed on the limitations of the JoyCon.

Sure, maybe Nintendo did know about the issue already. But that Toronto event isn't evidence of that.

Again, this isn't a RROD. If it's firmware fixable it'll be fixed by launch and if it's hardware Nintendo will set up a system for replacement joy cons. We get portable open world Zelda next week regardless. The issue will get fixed one way or another.

Question: is this something those effected are effected by at all times when far from the system or is it intermittent?

While you're right that it won't have the same level of negative effect as people having bricked consoles, you underestimate how much it could potentially cost Nintendo if they have to recall and replace every launch version joy-con. That is not an easy or cheap task. In that regard it very much IS similar to the RROD issue in that they're going to be eating the cost of fixing a hardware issue that should have been caught and fixed while still in production.

This sounds like it's a firmware issue. If so, the day one patch will probably fix it. If not, well Nintendo will fix it somehow. Historically, they never let a critical hardware issue get by on their watch, case in point, the time they recalled all Famicom units during the holiday season due to a a faulty chip.

Here's one theory: it could be intentional.

What's Nintendo hurriedly doing before launch? Final testing of games on retail units. Lots of testing. The kind of testing where it might be useful to have joycons that last 30 or 40 hours as opposed to 20.

They're also doing previews on the TV circuit, to the press, at various events. Could be useful to have longer-lasting joycons when the Switch is being heavily played, and the environment is controlled so that people can be kept nearer to the dock.

If they knew it was going to be fixed in the day one update anyway they could've just left it in that state.

Now all we need is for a press person to totally charge their joycon, and totally drain their joycon, and see how long it lasts. If it's longer than the advertised 20 hours then we might have some indication.

No way dude

I do wonder, maybe this was not reflected in testing of natural environments because Japanese houses/living rooms are typically much smaller than those in Western societies? Even then, it seems like such an obvious oversight.

I just want to confirm that if I'm playing Zelda using the Joycons on the dumb grip within 3 metres / 10ft, there shouldn't be any dropouts a long as I don't grab it like a weirdo?

I didn't pre-order the Pro controller, but the Switch will be in my bedroom, which is only 10ft long.
