Fallon's problem is that he forgets he's the host and his guests are....his guests. Break their balls a little more, Jimmy, call them out on some of their shit without coming off hostile. You don't need to laugh at all their dumb jokes.
 
Colbert isn't even winning in the demo that actually matters.

Not to mention live views in the age DVR, cord cutting, and YT make it matter even less.

For the record I don't really watch a ton of late night as I have to get up in the morning with the family to go to school/work.

I'm also happy Colbert has rebounded, and I don't particularly hate any of the late night hosts including Fallon. I'm not a massive watcher so I guess I'm not a super fan of any of them either.

It's more about what the actual narrative here is. Not to mention what happens when the political climate simmers down.
 
My personal view but Fallon feels really fake. Now most talk shows are scripted, but Fallons feels a lot more obvious or there is less effort made to hide that fact. Every aspect of his show feels incredibly scripted.
 
Fallon will recover, I suspect. But very happy for Colbert in the interim. He deserves success.

Also I doubt "PageSix" has a source for this. It's just obvious. Ratings dip, new Trump-focused segment is introduced. Pretty easy inference to make

RIGHT? TV is supposed to distract us from life's realities and ensure we remain docile and apolitical! Why must yet another show, featuring a format that relies largely on news events, focus on a political revolution that is jeopardizing democracy?? Boooooo, bring back empty nostalgia-based content 😢
 
Awesome. I remember Colbert wasn't doing so hot in ratings not long after he started, so I'm super glad he turned it around.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic, I assume you are, but there are already lots of media personalities performing political satire/comedy. Some are more suited for it (Colbert) and others are just beating a dead horse (SNL). The issue I'm getting at is when so many daily outlets are doing the same political commentary and jokes they begin to get old and boring. I know everyone is applauding SNL, but to me all their stuff has just been so incredibly lazy. If all you're going to do is bring up a blurb or tweet and then do a funny accent to it, it's not that funny.

Jimmy Fallon is a generic ass white comedian who appeals to the "normies". Asking him to switch up his whole routine to suddenly be political is not going to be anything worth while. It's possible it ends up turning his audience away even more because perhaps people like his show for the very reason it's not super political. Not everyone wants to be tapped into news 24/7 and have it be filled with uninspiring jokes.

It's called "Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon" and it's a screen simulator like most Universal rides. Apparently the ride itself is not too great, but it has a detailed queue with live entertainment. They have already begun a soft open to the public even though the official isn't until next month.

If I was being mean I would have said "I hope he relapses on cocaine". I hope he doesn't relapse on cocaine and I do think he needs to step down from the Tonight show.

Ultimately, this is a "different strokes for different folks" kinda thing. I personally can't stand Fallon, but I can see why he's so popular.

If you want more ammo for future fights with your friend, you might want to consider this:

There are two types of comedians - clowns and talkers. Clowns rely mostly on their performance to get laughs. Talkers, obviously, rely mostly on their words, their writing. Sometimes there are comedians who excel as both clowns and talkers, but for the most part comics fall more into one camp or the other.

Fallon is a clown. Notice how his monologues tend to be pretty short; that's because I don't think he nor his staff are particularly good comedy writers. Look at the Tonight Show Youtube playlist, and you'll see that his monologues get the least views. Watch them, and you'll see that he doesn't get many laughs. Because the writing is a weak spot, he has to make up for it with outrageous performances. He'll dress up in drag. He'll cake on makeup to look like Trump. He'll play elementary school instruments with the Roots and Metallica. Etc.

Don't get me wrong, Fallon is a good clown. His performances are high-energy, he's a talented impressionist, and his musical segments are thoroughly entertaining. But his jokes, in my opinion, aren't very funny. His interview style is also pretty obnoxious. That's why he's not known for hilarious monologues or insightful interviews. Instead, he's known for playing fun, silly games with celebrities. If you like that kind of stuff, then great.

Colbert is a talker. He has very good comedy writers on his staff. As for Colbert himself, he's a surprisingly intelligent person with both a talent and a lot of training in improv. I think Steve Carell once described Colbert as "the smartest man I know." You can see what he means whenever Colbert talks.

Colbert isn't that good of a clown; at least he isn't as good as Fallon. He isn't that good at impressions. He doesn't often dress up in silly costumes. But his monologues are top-notch. That's why when you go to to the Late Show Youtube playlist, you'll see a lot of monologue videos - some of which are around 10 minutes long. Plus you'll see that his monologue videos tend to get the most views out of anything else posted on the channel.

Fallon is a clown, Colbert is a talker. Colbert is winning in the ratings right now because people are freaking out about the political situation, and they want comedians who'll make them feel better about it. That's a job for a talker, not a clown. On the flip side, Fallon dominated the ratings when the country was pretty chill about politics, and wanted to see a late show host and Emma Stone throw buckets of chicken through a basketball hoop rather than hear jokes about the president.

Whether someone's a clown or a talker, there are situations that they're best suited for, and there will be people who prefer one form of comedy over the other.

That's what happens when a network gets behind actual talent and gives them a chance to do what they do and build an audience.

not really. your exaggeration doesn't make sense, since most people here are just voicing their honest opinions, strong though some of them may be. We don't think he's that funny. We think he fake laughs. We prefer other entertainers, essentially. No one here is blowing anything out of proportion. You just see a lot of people who dislike Fallon's show and maybe his method of work. So the burning of homes and implied irrational(?) hatred doesn't really follow.
 
Since I'm from the UK I only really heard of Jimmy Fallon since last year. Having seen some of his recent skits I came to the conclusion quite quickly that he is probably the most bland, unoriginal and uncharismatic host I've ever seen, just utterly benign and boring. Seeing him parody Trump by essentially copying Alec Baldwin's performance was just so embarrassing.
 
Never cared for Fallon and he was IMO the worst cast member in SNL's history (and that's saying a lot) for how long he was there being terrible, it's really no wonder he got the Tonight Show gig though, yay connections! Maybe the Trump deal showed the world just how big of a tool he is.
 
Colbert deserves all of his success. His show has been outstanding from day one. Actually, even the videos they did leading up to the debut were pretty good.

Seriously.

Topical discussions were never something Fallon showed an interest in talking about in his comedic routines. Whatever changes he makes will have a greater risk of alienating the viewers he built up already, rather than attract or bring back others.

I don't even know what Fallon can do at this point. No one on the planet does political comedy better than Colbert and Corden's beaten him on the viral video celebrity jerkoff shtick. Jimmy's got no niche now.
 
Really could not be happier for Colbert, he's been killing it recently. His Late Show has been pretty good from the start (even if I'm not normally a fan of the standard format), but I feel like it's really found its footing lately. His monologues have been up there with some of the best satire from the Colbert Report days.

I grew up following Colbert since I was 10 years old and he was still a correspondent when I started watching the Daily Show. I watched Colbert Report from beginning to end. In his finale, when the credits started to roll and Holland, 1945 began playing to my surprise (possibly my favorite song of all time), I legitimately teared up and cried a little. I still think the Colbert Report's run during the 2012 election cycle, with his Super PAC and everything, is probably the best run of any late night show, and among the best political satire of all time.

I've also been really impressed with Seth Meyers recently. I've been watching A Closer Look and a lot of his interviews on YouTube a lot.

Very few Late Night hosts throughout TV history are clowns. Fallon was the best of a very limited talent pool and earned his ratings when the tastes in comedy didn't have to be as cerebral.

Personally though I think Fallon's act as a clown is weak and simply isn't clowny enough to match In Living Color or MAD even within the constraints of the format. He needs to step his clown game.
 
Man, there are a lot of hateful people on GAF, isn't there? Why do so many people here actively cheer on the failings of another person? What are you, like 12 years old? Let go of that shit and you'll feel a lot better, might even start opening up to other people instead of passive aggressively dumping your frustrations out on this forum.

I don't watch late night TV, and I'm indifferent to Fallon/Colbert, but you guys are all gonna consecutively post about how he needs to "fuck off" and "go away" because he petted Trump's head? Don't you have more important things to worry about? Get over yourself.

I wish Fallon the best, regardless of whether or not I personally find him funny/entertaining. I like the competition between them.
