Persona 5 Review Thread

Now that I think about it it probably sold more than all of those combined even with Zelda right now. Persona will move maybe 1.5-2 million WW at best. Which I believe FFXV will do the upcoming year or two with sales.

I highly doubt that.
FFXV was reported at what, 6 million shipped?
Dark Souls 3 alone has shipped over 3 million. Nioh has done a million. That's four million right there. I really don't think that adding Zelda, Persona 5, and Nier to that would still lose to FFXV. Zelda+DS3+Nioh alone is probably higher or at the very least around the same as FFXV.

Alright, I've added all the scores/excerpts from the larger publications, so I'm going to go have some well-deserved breakfast.

If anyone asks, I'm avoiding putting the Digital Trends review in the OP since people will undoubtedly focus on that.

Just by looking at the Metacritic

Zelda Breath of the Wild: 97
Persona 5: 95
Nier: 89
Dark Souls 3: 89
Nioh: 88
Yakuza 0: 85
Xenoblade Chronicles X: 84
Tales of Berseria: 79

FF XV 81

Final Fantasy has seen the smallest success compared to other Japanese RPG franchises.
It seems they had a reason for asking people whether they would buy persona 5 or FF XV if released at the same date.
Do you seriously think Persona 5 would have been a threat to FFXV's sales? This is hilarious.

Tried to redo this in 5 min with no skills and no software :

Edit : Apparently RE7 also came on Xbox One lol didn't know. WELL IGNORE THAT AND ROAST ME AWAY

Yes, this is for the western peasants because japan got these in 2015 or 16 and console exclusive being purposely vague because some came on PS3 and also.

All this to say, we cannot even today, match the glorious PS2 era.

A simple image that really does hammer home what an awesome first quarter 2017 has had.

this is about acessibility, its not about the quality of the game.

If a book or movie is released only in english, but its a masterpiece, you Will not say the movie/book is bad because its not in your language.

And i'm a brazilian we suffer way more than spanish speackers in this regard.

They still gave it a 9.3. If they really docked points for it, it's a pretty minor percentage. They don't dwell on it that much in the review either.

Also it's completely fair to note it in a review for a major worldwide release in 2017. For a massive text-based RPG, it is a notable barrier that the devs/pubs didn't feel was worth the time/resources to break down.

I didn't expect anything less than 90 from most places anyways, but glad to see it's getting good reviews anyways.

I'd go to bat for that review, it's well written and the writer makes good points about the weaknesses of the game. Not to pressure you, just saying the review is not problematic.

Where does it says that the game is bad? They gave it a 9.3.

Why are we cherry picking now?

Right, focus on the actual review, not just the end score.

Nice reviews as expected...

I'm worried though. The late game stuff sounds like a real chore and bad game design.
My hope is that it's not as bad as some of the reviews mentioned.

There's nothing wrong with people who wished to play a game in their native language in 2017.

Heh. I guess this privilege of speaking more widespread language. You would never see dutch, swedish or finnish site complaining about lack of localization to their language and giving less points to game because of that (and still all of those nations buy more games per capita than spain).

I agree with the review too. It says that the game ''overstays it's welcome'' which is absolutely true for majority of RPGs.

Hell, Persona 4 Golden had an entire new dungeon, solely focused on a character that I didn't like. So it's a legit criticism.

I didn't compare them by sales, It's true that the FF Brand has greater appeal but it shows that reception of the FF titles has changed compared to past entries and current competition in terms of reviews
Just an observation by a fan of the series ;)

The past year has been pretty good for fans of AAA Japanese video games:

Zelda Breath of the Wild: 97
Persona 5: 94
Nier: Automata: 89
Dark Souls 3: 89
Nioh: 88
Resident Evil 7: biohazard: 86
Yakuza 0: 85
The Last Guardian: 82
FFXV: 81
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE: 80
Tales of Berseria: 79

I feel like MGS5 was the warning shot. Anyway, I'm looking forward to this game a lot.

Edit: Fixed

Part of me was hoping this game would be garbage because as much as I want to play this, I'm not 100% certain I want to play another 100-hour game. If it was bad, I'd have an excuse to not play it. Now I don't have an excuse.

I feel like the Jimquisition review would derail it more than DT's review...

I think there is a difference between not caring about scores but caring about reviews.
I'm curious about what people write about their experiences with the game I could give 0 twats about what arbitrary number they come up with to sum up a 100+ hour experience(actually any kind of experience).
Quick example is Jim Sterling's closing sentence to his review

"I played 120 hours in just a couple of weeks and damn it was a lot of fun."

What's the point of a score after reading that?

I'm really glad this one has hand-designed dungeons rather than lazy procedurally generated garbage. That really turned me off Persona 4, to the point that I never finished it (that reminds me, need to sell my copy of P4G). Maybe I will give this one a chance.

I dont think those three combined are higher than FFXV in sales, no. All of them? Eh probably really close. Either way the point was that a stupid comment was made about FFXV being the least successful which is laughable in any sense of the word.

Now quality wise obviously he has a point. I'm of the opinion that FFXV should've had a lower score than 81 since I didnt enjoy it nearly as much as the other games.

Alright, it's been added. (Wasn't cherry picking, just trying to avoid another NieR: Automata thread lock over people being unreasonable with their reactions.)

Still early in the thread, but glad that someone docked points for it being a tv only game. Persona is one of the few games I'll force myself to play on tv, but 100 hour JRPG of all things is the worst thing you could make tv only.

Anywayz: Glad to see all the high scores! Can't wait to get the game tho I'll be late since I get it via free non prime shipping on amazon. XD

Doesnt seem fair to cherry pick good reviews and censor ones that aren't as favorable.

What a weird criticism. The Switch is out so now if you don't deliver an underpowered on-the-go experience you're doing it wrong?
