LTTP : The Order 1886

I would imagine that I won't say anything new, but I felt that as it was quite a divisive game when it came out, so I thought I'd throw out some words about it.

I picked it up on sale, and went in with an open mind, and didn't really know what to expect, but I didn't really get what I thought I might, the game is a bit of a mish-mash of genres, there's some walking sim, some cover based shooter, some interactive movie / QTE, and on the whole, it just about works.

I quite enjoyed the time I spent with it, I found the story was pretty good, the acting and voice work was also good, and the game was pretty much dripping with atmosphere (albeit a bit dark at times)

It's no surprise to know that I thought the game looked stunning, although I wasn't a fan of the 'movie bars', loved the beards!, there were some quite exciting scenes, and some not so exciting ones, there was a lot of reused scenes, the search animation, or the lycan fights, and for god sake those bloody insta-fail sections........damn......

I guess I'd have been a bit miffed if I had paid full price for it, it's quite a short game, and a fair percentage of that time is spent in unskipable cutscenes, but I think if the game was much longer it would have outstayed it's welcome, but I am glad I played it.

I got it cheap and really enjoyed it. The game was short and didn't overstay it's welcome, the stealth sections were a nice change of pace and I didn't have any problems getting through them and I found the combat to be passable.

It was a decent try at a first attempt for a game and would have loved a more fleshed out sequel but it seems that ship has sailed.

I think a lot of the disappointment surrounding this was born out of the fact that in the lead up, everything looked incredible. New IP with incredible graphics, great atmosphere, interesting looking story.

Then on release it turned out that you could complete it in half a day and people just wanted more. Maybe expected more.

Looking back on my time with it, i quite enjoyed it. Just wish my time with it had been longer.

One of the worst 'experiences' I've ever 'played'.

I got it bundled with the PS4 and still felt scammed.

Thankfully I played Bloodborne immediately after and my faith in videogames was restored for years.

Bought this on the cheap recently. Flawed but I really enjoyed it. Don't expect variety or crazy gameplay mechanics but do expect solid gunplay and a visually stunning (and consistent) world.

Yeah, it could have been a great game, like said above, all the trappings were there, but it just didn't come together in a way to make it a classic game, I am glad I didn't follow the pre release hype!

As a 7hr interactive experience, it was fine.

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
Enjoyed it apart from the slow walking/pacing at the start but then I picked it up for a song and got my money back in a trade in so basically cost me nothing. However, if I'd bought it on release for full rrp I would've felt much different.

If the sequel improved on its downfalls I'd buy it because the world and story was an interesting one, plus all that work gone into the assets and shit.

I made a profit on the game and still regret the time I wasted playing it.

I didn't mind it. There's a solid gameplay foundation for a potentially great sequel.

Needed to be more game and less movie.

I've enjoyed it. Great atmosphere, outstanding graphics and solid gameplay.

Some walking parts overstay their welcome and QTEs.. are QTEs, but overall it's a 7 game. It would've been a great starting point for a sequel..

I think it's a solid game and didn't understand all the bashing about the game time... it's not shorter than most games (8-10h)...

The gameplay is fun, graphic is incredible, acting is good, story is a good start (probably we will never see a sequel...)...

For sure is not a 4-5 game, I personally give it an 8, but probably 7 is the right vote for a game with mostly no replay value and not many gameplay solutions.

The sequel could have improved where it lacks.

Yup, 100% agree with that.

I'm quite happy it was 8-10hr, I played it off the back of finishing Watch Dogs 2 (which I thought was pretty great) and The Order was a great palette cleanser.

Haven't finished it yet, but I would love to see a more fletched out sequel. This could be the Playstation Gears of War, if Sony will pump more money in to the production I guess.

One of the best games this gen, for me.

Pros:

- Epic cutscenes
- Fantastic gameplay
- Great story
- Great lore
- Incredible graphics
- Galahad is amazing
- Inventive weapons

Cons:

- Too short
- Final boss was meh

Maybe not one of the best this gen for me but I definitely agree with your points.

that's just his opinion, though i get why it's a funny one :)

Order 1886 is a shockingly weak entry to a brand new ip, it sure did have amazing visuals. But the core gameplay wasn't fun or engaging at all, shooting with the weapons felt meh, hand to hand combat was annoyingly QTE based. The way the writer was teasing the game's narrative, I was led to believe an Uncharted or really well written game type stuff, but in the end it felt mediocre at best and disappointing at worst. There wasn't enough dialogues written for the characters, thus I wasn't quite getting the character as much as the studio devs had in mind. And they masked couple of chapters as cutscenes with no gameplay! Some of the levels to move around was intriguing, but for the most it felt bad and average. I just couldn't believe in the end that this is the game Ready at Dawn could develop, considering the incredibly well designed/written games on the portable console ie Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta.

If Order gets a sequel and if they can address all these areas in the sequel, then we would finally get the game we wanted to play

I enjoyed it. I think at ~10$ I paid it was good value. I enjoyed the setting. I think it was about the right length for me. I probably wouldn't have felt it was good value at full price.

If it had launched at a lower price point, it would possibly have been better received. But that may not have been affordable for the devs given the production standards.

I think it's a solid game and didn't understand all the bashing about the game time... it's not shorter than most games (8-10h)...

It's more like 6-7 hours, a non-trivial portion of that are either non-interactive or semi-interactive, and it has essentially nothing else on offer. No secondary modes, minimal collectibles, no multiplayer. It's a story driven game with a cliche plot and flat characters. It's a mechanically competent third person shooter, but one with nothing new to offer fans of the genre and nothing that hasn't been done better in other games. Boss fights are an especially sore spot as the only one that exists is a repeated werewolf QTE battle that wasn't fun the first time around.

The two sole bright spots are the graphics, which are indisputably excellent, and the setting, which has potential that was squandered on this game.

Alt History Victorian England Werewolf Hunters? That's an excellent pitch for a game. It's not the game they made though. What they made was the most cookie cutter TPS I've played in years, with an array of stock-standard modern shooter weapons that are awkwardly shoved into the anachronistic setting, complete with the normal range of modern shooter enemies. 99.9999% of the enemies you fight are humans with guns. The assault rifle guy who hides in cover. The shotgun armoured guy who rushes you. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

The Order: 1886 is a game with absolutely no raison d'être.

It depends on how good the developer is. The Order is very short and even with that it reuses some scenes and mechanics. I think the problem is they spent too much time to make it the most graphically advanced game on the PS4 (I had a lot of with the photo mode) and they ended up not having a lot of it left to design the actual levels.

I enjoyed this game (because I like pretty games ;)), but this is a worthy purchase only when it's on a big sale.

All of the above. Although I'd still rate it a 7/10 or so simply because it only got to the story it wanted to tell towards the end.

Maybe it'll get a sequel someday...?

Game is really pretty but as a game it's pretty below average. There were flashes of quality with the combat but those segments are few and far between. You can call this a walking simulator and you wouldn't be exaggerating. I'd say it's PS4s Ryse, but even Ryse has more gameplay than this. I'd like to see a sequel tho, considering the lore was interesting.

I enjoyed every minute of it. Sad it's not getting a sequel.
Still the best looking video game by far.

This has been on my pick up when there's nothing else to play list for a long time. I'm a sucker for pretty games and can forgive a surprising amount for some style over substance. Will definitely get it at some stage.

It was an okay game, but I finished it ultimately disappointed considering my expectations. I still hope to see a more fleshed out sequel though. Galahad going full Victorian-era James Bond with Tesla as his Q. There's so much interesting stuff in that world.

It was nearly a generation ahead in terms of graphics, but a whole generation behind in terms of design.

The days when you could get away with selling a short, single-player campaign at full whack are long passed. The lack of replay value showed a monumental lack of foresight - that you can quite easily platinum the game in 6-7 hours is... well, it's not good.

Live and you learn, I guess...

That's how I felt, too, danowat.

I think the low quantity for high price is what threw most people.

But I really enjoyed my time with it. I even liked the stealth missions which never gave me any trouble.

The story is great until the last couple of minutes when you can tell time and budget flew out the window and it had to be wrapped insanely quickly.

I enjoyed every minute of it. Sad it's not getting a sequel.
Still the best looking video game by far.

RAD are on record saying the universe hasn't been finished with yet.

Who knows when anything will happen, though.

I remember enjoying my playthrough when it came out, but when I picked up a cheap dl in a PSN sale (traded the physical copy)...god no. It's bloody awful.

The complaints about the stealth section when you start the level with a long distance 1hk weapon that enables you to remove threats at a distance always amuse me.

RAD are on record saying the universe hasn't been finished with yet.

Who knows when anything will happen, though.

Doesn't really matter what RAD say tbh. Long story short, the IP belongs to Sony and they seem to have no interest in doing anything with it (for a while at least).

Played through a lot of it and hated it, mish-mash of poorly done attempts at genres, incredibly annoying sectors and there has not been a game this gen where I slapped my head and went "wtf were they thinking" more.

Graphics were stunning and I fucking love steampunk so doubly disappointing for me, I can kind of see what they were going for, but the fail was infuriating to me.

It is an unfinished game with bad gameplay.

But for these $4 deals it is passable.

The game is complete. Just because you thought it was too short doesn't mean that it's unfinished. They told what they wanted to say with the game, they're was no or next to no bug in the game as well.

This kind of post are why a conversation surrounding The Order is next to impossible here.

Still the worst/most disappointing game I played this gen. Ahead of NMS for me.

I'd put Arkham Knight as the most disappointing game of this gen, due to the expectations I had based on its predecessors. In comparison, The Order was nowhere near as disappointing for me.

I thought it was pretty great with fantastic potential for a sequel.

It wasnt a great game, but not nearly as bad as the press made it out to be either. It had good things, and bad ones, but mostly good. Fun weapons with good gameplay (alas, too short, too few sections of it), incredible graphics, amazing setting, interesting story an characters who, given enought room, could be great.

It had bad things though. Too many "walking" sections, too many qte, too short, the stupid werewolf fights, etc.

The funny thing about the game, though, was the meltdown on the press. They were trying so hard to hate the game more than anyone else, to prove they didnt get swayed by graphics alone, to be the cool kid, they came out as petty and silly most of the times. I mean, remember the complaints about the game over if you failed the sniper mission? Come the fuck on, it was your objective, you failed it, even though you had soooooooooooo much time to get it right, yes, its game over, get over it and try again. Or the "OMG the stealth sections are so hard, un forgiving and terible!!!!!!!". I was expecting something on the level of the first spinter cell after reading those complaints. Imagine my surprise whe i could simply run throu the first section an avoid the 2? 3? only guards without even havint to hide. And the second one was even funnier since you could just use your crossbow to kill anyone on your way withoug making a sound, thus avoiding the "stealth" entirely.

I have such mixed feelings about this game.

What impressed me the most wasn't the graphics, it was the world they that built, the lore, the events that the story mentioned that I so wanted to get more involved in. I would absolutely love a return to that world in some form.

The gameplay wasn't the best for me but I did still enjoy playing through the game and I'm tempted now to redownload it and play it again.

I knew what to expect going in. Loved it.

Only game I ever played through on hard, following advice on Gaf. Glad I did.

Another voice crying in the dark that we'll never see a sequel.

Alright:

It's a beautiful museum piece with more potential missed than any franchise opener I can think of.

Its gameplay, while competent, isn't especially exciting. There's a lot of repetition in boss encounters, the good gunfights are over too quickly & the lack of a chance to really get into the more fun weapons is annoying.

The story constantly comes so close to what IME are genuinely original plot ideas but just leaves them as hints - it's a 6 hour tease.

The environments are like a museum exhibit - pretty, but lifeless. The lack of interactivity is rendered more starkly by the superb visuals, which invite you to explore...but the most you can do is knock a cup off a table.

I was a pretty staunch supporter of the game at launch, but returning to it recently I was struck by how badly it's aged - and IMO while it may remain unsurpassed visually in many technical areas (AA, textures etc.) I think its less than the sum of its parts when compared with UC4 & HZD in that area, while not even being close to either in gameplay.

Terrible 70€ game. Good 10€ game. it doesnt have content to justify a full price but the little it has its extreme polished and the atmosphere and setting is great. The shooter parts are meh but anything else works fine.
