How satisfied you are by Phil Spencer so far?

I couldn't be happier with One X and everything they've done in this era. Likewise, the early Series X stuff was great, and I love that they've gone all-out on hardware twice in a row.

The past two showings make me seriously doubt the competency of everyone involved.

So... I'm mixed. I think 'Team Spencer' has been a blessing for Xbox fans, but everything since May or so has been a complete mess, and they need to get it together.

Great salesman, he know how to talk to the people without pissing them off, not like Mattrick. But as a lead, the results is not here yet.

Being back these two:

They had a clear vision along with the aptitude to execute that vision.

It's been a flip flopping mess ever since and continues to be so even under Phil Spencer.

I wonder what would be the results for a similar poll but for Jim Ryan.
Anyways, im super satisfied. Lets be honest although: Compared to Mattrick, even a drunk horse would be better.
Some really cool achievements: Gamepass, Xbox One S and X, Elite Controller, first party acquisitions, Series X hardware, refund policy, new improved OS UI, and backwards compatibility.

I'd love to start building a games library on Xbox Series X but I'm not convinced they will be making consoles by the end of the decade.

On the games front, it took him a bit too long to assemble Xbox Game studios.
But he's done great regarding all the consumer friendly moves.

I don't feel the need to own an Xbox right now... So nope, not satisfied. The 360 was my first non Playstation console and I have fond memories of it... I miss the Xbox of those days.

I like Phil. I feel he is genuinely a gamer, I feel he genuinely relates well with people. May be a little too laid back at times, but overall seems like a "dude", and he came at a time when Xbox needed to connect with people.

But as far as results go, as much as I would like to like him, I think he has been underwhelming. Xbox can't seem to get its footing, sandwiched between good things like buying many news studios and promising the most powerful console, are still no notable system selling exclusives and games that look current gen but are made for the next. Halo looks tired, Forza has been burned out, and the few mainstream exclusive titles of interest this gen either;

A) Didn't play well (Ryse)

B) They lost the developer (Sunset overdrive)

bringing back Fable is a good thing IMO, but even that... the trailer didn't really connect well with me in tone (yes, I know it was a CG teaser).

Admittedly Xbox is my 3rd console choice, but I try to look at everything objectively, and objectively I feel they are still peddling 3rd coming into this next gen.

edit: I chose "skeptical" in the poll. I would tag that I am doubtful on the future of Xbox (3rd option), but again - I really like Phil and hope he finds success.

He keep saying how he has good relationship with Japanese developers and yet strangely games like Sakuna and Atelier Ryza 2 are not coming to Xbox even tho it coming to Switch, PS4 and even PC.

It took them over a decade to finally bring Dragon Quest XI to Xbox.

Thankfully they are getting these:

But they also coming to PS4/PS5 as well, but as long as Phil is this choosy in what Japanese game they will get released on Xbox then I have no interest getting their system.

I can just buy PS5 and never have to worry about what Japanese games I might miss out.

Yeah timed exclusive. Cuphead was a timed exclusive from a small developer and took almost 3 years to make it to PS4. Not really a gotcha now is it.
You think Stalker will take 3 years to come to Playstation?

And anyway i don't think anyone gives a shit about timed exclusives regardless if they are from Sony or MS. The most they can do is to annoy fans but not enough to make them run to buy a console (or a service) for them.

I hesitate between satisfied and skeptical. An intermediate answer would have been nice.

Sakuna and Atelier Ryza 2
That's way too niche, you will never get this on Xbox.

but as long as Phil is this choosy in what Japanese game
He does not decide anything, it is up to the publishers. Of course Spencer is going to visit the biggest ones as they are the most important to have the games on Xbox. He actually built a good relationship with the biggest publishers, it seems pretty obvious. So that's a good effort overall.

I can just buy PS5 and never have to worry about what Japanese games I might miss out.
But how do you play Halo, Recore, Ori, Forza or Gears ? What matters here is that Xbox players don't miss out on the most important Japanese games, that's it.

I like him, i like what theyve been doing but i feel like he lacks the "killer instinct" to actually win a generation. Hes too nice.

Example, he buys studios but keeps releasing those games on playstation. That to me is being WAY too nice. I get that its pro consumer, but being pro consumer doesnt sell your console if you release your IPs on the opposing one.

What he needs to do:

- if youre trying to win a generation, then stop supporting your opposition by releasing games on playstation.
- be more aggressive. Get exclusive deals like sony do. It sucks for us but if sony continually do it, then you need to do it too.

Overall, hes good. But hes too nice.

He blew it. Plain and simple. Time for him to along with the rest of his cronies.

Bring back Peter Moore and hire some of the Sony guys like Jack Tretton, Shawn Layden and Andrew House because everyone currently at microsoft is responsible for gamers not getting a single next gen first party game for the next 2-3 years. simply unacceptable.

Dont know how long it will take. I just know it wont be on there no time soon and the smaller the developer the more leverage Microsoft has for exclusive length. I dont/wouldn't want to wait to play Scorn, Stalker, or The Ascent a year or more later. Maybe you're cool with that.

And that my biggest issue, niche or not PlayStation gets them, I highly enjoyed Sakura Wars PS4 and if the next one comes out what are the chance Xbox gets them?

If I choose XSX over PS5 then every time new Japanese games gets announced, it becomes a dice roll of if Xbox will get it or not and as huge fan of Japanese games that type of console its useless to me.

This. Xbox first and 360 later were a good and a great console after it's been a mess, all we have about series X until proven wrong is a bunch of fluff talk and lies, especially the policy of crossgen games for years has given XsX the role of an Xone X 2 and not a new generation

I like him as a person but I don't think I like where Xbox is going

Full disclaimer: If Halo Infinite, Hellblade 2, and some other games looked bananas visually and showed it during gameplay then I might have a different opinion

Sakura Wars
Feels less niche to me, might happen for the next installment, especially as this is SEGA. Not at all the same situation as with Marvelous or other "niche" Japanese developers.

Also Atlus will happen I think, just a matter of time.

He is the most likeable "head" of the 3 console makers and I think he has done a good job turning things around for Xbox after the terrible start they had this gen.

Though I personally don't like the direction Xbox is going and I'm skeptical about the Gamepass model in the long run.

Jesus. Burn this thread now. It's going to be a dumpster and fire is the only way.

I'm gonna get laughed at for this, but fine: it's too early to tell. We're seeing a lot in these past few months showing what he's been aiming for, and those ideas haven't come to full fruition yet. I'm liking Gamepass and I'm liking the Series X overall, but you don't make a decision on how well these things work longterm before you see it. In a year, two years, we'll talk about how successful he has been.

For now, it's fair to say he's turned a disaster launch into something that's profitable and gradually becoming more respected, despite fanboys swinging for him at every chance. Xbox is the brand you talk about when you talk about value, about pro-consumerism. That can't be taken for granted, remember that that video of two executives sharing a game defined a generation.

Xbox was mocked for being the less powerful console. He changed that. It was mocked for Kinect and for being more expensive. He changed that, and it looks like it will continue to change.

Series X is likely to be cheaper and more powerful, and so it needs the games. I think it has the stronger of the two launch line-ups so far, but that's not saying much because we don't have full lists. He needs to prove there's the games. That'll be when we can say if he's been successful or not.

I like some of what Xbox has done the last several years, but don't like all of it.

Also not convinced they will turn it all around fast enough to not be basically killed by PS5; you can buy all the studios you want and go on a hiring spree it was too late to actually make anything impressive for the start of this gen and they are going to have a real hard time getting momentum against Sony.

And I also think they've sold their leadership too much on xCloud taking off. 5 years from now when it's barely made a dent in increasing their userbase the board of directors is gonna wonder why the fuck they invested so much in a brand that is basically failing. The answer is gonna be "Well ONE BILLLLION gamers.. with xCloud!" and they'll ask the question again.

I don't care much for figure heads. Xbox as a brand hasn't done it for me at all this gen but I still play with my 360. 🤷

Like I said its a dice roll, with Playstation I never have to worry about it because 99% of the time it will get the game.

Moore is available now too - his Liverpool FC CEO contract ran out at the end of this season and he's moving back to USA to be with his family. Xbox should definitely approach him. He's a winner.

This poll has the most evenly mixed votes i've ever seen on GAF so far. Interesting.
I expected this. The vast majority of GAF users are Sony fans, but not all of them are fanboys. So some of them respect what Spencer did for the gamers. I doubt we would have crossplay or BC on PS5 without him and maybe we all get free online gaming (again) thanks to him (fingers crossed).

We don't know much about Jim Ryan. Has he ever contradicted himself on a daily basis?
He made playstation successful in Europe and supported all European studios, but, he seems more of a business guy than former presidents. I don't trust him but let's see. His touch will be clear in few years eventhough he relatively old and may retire soon.

Guy is clearly trying to do everything he can to make is successful after the train wrecks his previous leadership conducted but he was part of the problem in some instances.

The new strategy is a bold one that is risky and I have to say I like risk takers for the most part. The xbox audience is one thats strange and demand certain things and when they get them dont support them and Phil has clearly stopped paying attention to the minority and is looking at building the brand into something much larger. Hes ambitious but sometimes I feel like his vision is a bit too wide.

Without Spencer though Xbox would likely be dead. i can't think of many other people who could have convinced Microsoft to keep going with gaming.

As a PC Owner I'm happy that I can play the new exclusives on the PC day one, but at the same time I don't see any reason to own an XBOX for future games from their studios, and I don't subscribe to Gamepass unless there's a ridiculously good promo so I don't think he's accomplishing too much for the brand, I had a 360 back in the day because I needed the hardware to play games only available in that console.

you know how sometimes you can do everything right but still don't get the result you want. where as someone else who just fucks up on every step but then at the end just wins anyways.

This is Phil Spencer, he is as good as you can get for someone at the executive level, Shawn Layden was a complete joke and yet PS4 thrived despite him being one of the worst execs.

I think after a year in to the new console generation they should replace him.

Xbox image needs someone that people can trust.
