Microsoft's internal documents recognize that adding games to Game Pass would lead to cannibalization of Buy-To-Play sales

I'm starting to wonder if some of these 3rd parties can sue based on previous statements about gamepass. Phil made it sound like a great place to put your game. Sales increase. etc.

In fact, this evasive response is so smooth, I wouldn't be surprised if this PR was written by Phil himself.

What this does somewhat confirm though is partners who jump on gamepass are likely working with Microsoft to maximize their bottom-line, which by participating in the service. Something we already got a hint of when they spend $600,000 for that cooking game to come to gamepass. Likely covering the sales revenue by partnering with Xbox to be featured on GP.

FYI, that $600,000 pretty much covered around 30k sales of the game.

I Dont Believe You Will Ferrell GIF

You don't believe that Microsoft holds unique negotiation with devs and pays them for putting their games in the service?

😂

aside from console warriors, who the fuck cares?

Bro are you for real?
PR statements and Phil saying random shit on podcasts have no bearing on actual contracts which include projections, targets, minimum guarantees, and whatnot.

This is such a nontroversy.

I'm not sure who besides the most rabid console warriors would care one way or the other.

The only two factors that matter are:

1: do gamers get good value for their money? The answer to this is obviously yes.
2: do game developers get good money for their work? The answer to this also appears to be yes, considering how a whole lot of developers seem to be very happy to release their games on day one on game pass. The fact that it may lead to fewer unit sales is absolutely irrelevant if what they get from Microsoft outweighs it.

The fact that some seem to have a vested interest in finding some sort of smoking gun against Game Pass is such a strange thing to me. It's almost like they hate that consumers get games for cheap. What a weird stance. 🤔

You also can't be a public company running around misleading investors. Not sure about misleading going into these GP contracts.

In Scotland we would settle all this back and forth animosity and accusations of fanmanism with a few bottles of Whisky and later on an ill-fated visit to a brothel where we get asked to leave 12 seconds after we enter.

We then end up back in someone's hotel room and the only person who can still speak/read text on their phone "orders some girls" but he's mega thirsty for Asians so we end up running a train on a 58 year old called Feng-Feng.

Abriael_GN Abriael_GN ends up smoking cigars on the balcony with one of the night staff cursing out the rest of us.

You do realize the 'PR talk' is pretty much them saying they negotiate compensation with devs to put their games on Gamepass? Right there in the OP?

You people are something else

That's not the PR talk HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 or the article is referring to. The PR talk referred to in the article are "previous statements by Phil Spencer that insist a game being placed on the service actually increases sales overall".

Microsoft responds to this revelation that Game Pass cannibalizes game sales.

I'm still trying to find an actual answer in this response.
This reads like some of my writing when I needed to write a paper in high school. Just throw around key words on the topic and form sentences that don't really make sense or flow, just so I could hit a word limit. 😂

Edit: Well shit, someone a couple replies above had pretty much the same point lol

Mods moved the posts…it was originally in a separate thread about Microsoft's response to the recent discourse about Gamepass impact on game sales.

Folks just blindly went with the "it's PR speak" talk.

The article is about Microsoft's response to recent discourse about Gamepass impact on game sales.

I'm not sure how you think his initial post refers to Phil's comments from 2019 or so.

What are you talking about? The article is directly referencing Phil Spencer's comments. The article even calls those statements "seemingly contradictory". What else would HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 be referring to?

What are YOU talking about? The article is about Microsoft's statement to Kotaku, and that statement is what he dismissed as 'PR talk'.

Q quest Of course they want their game on gamepass. It's a guaranteed check.
Or like a lot of smaller games getting exposure and word of mouth can be a huge help and generate sales. Versus being 1 of 1000000 unknown games on steam or playstation store.

High on Life Developer Says Launching on Game Pass "Was a Huge Value-Add"
"We are an indie studio. We're small. And we do want a war chest to make a bunch more fun crazy games. And that was of consideration for us," says Squanch Games founder and Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland.

high on life

High on Life has enjoyed an incredible launch, especially in terms of pure numbers. Not only did the game top Steam's sales charts in its debut week, it also became instantly popular on Game Pass right at launch, to the extent that it's become the biggest ever Game Pass launch for a third party game to date, and the biggest launch for any game on the service in 2022.

The service's value has, of course, been made clear to players and users on a consistent basis for quite some time now- but the developers who engage with it have also frequently spoken about its benefits. High on Life developer Squanch Games has now joined that growing list as well.

Speaking on a recent episode of the official Xbox Podcast, Rick and Morty co-creator and Squanch Games founder Justin Roiland spoke about the decision to launch day and date on Game Pass and what led to it.

"Before we decided to pull the trigger on it, I spoke with a handful of other studio folks who did Game Pass," he said. "And I ultimately came to the conclusion based off of what I had heard that it is– it's a value-add. Because essentially, there's a lot of people that would otherwise not have picked up the game and played it.

"And those people, if you believe in what you've made, and you really you feel confident that you've made something special, or different– and we do with our game– those folks can become evangelists in a way for the title."

"If someone's on the fence or raising an eyebrow, what is this thing? And if they're a Game Pass subscriber, well, they can just download it and dive in," he added. "[It's] a powerful tool to get a lot of reach. If you really do believe you made something worthwhile, it's a pretty powerful tool. And that's what I gathered in doing my due diligence on it on my own. A lot of folks told me that non-Game Pass games that they ship versus Game Pass games, [they get] 7x sales."

Makes sense. Microsoft paid for a timed exclusive. That's a guaranteed check.

Compare 2 games that got shit on by reviews. One got positive word of mouth on gamepass vs the sony marketing machine.

262k sales

157k sold

Well yeah. Good they finally admitted it. At least MS has billions to sustain it. And lots of indie devs got contracts and money cause of it. Like Netflix in gaming

Cool. Doesn't change anything I said. For the record, I have no idea if that is a reputable source of information, but doesn't really matter since it is beside the point.

So now we are all the way down to itty bitty games or indies MS pays for.

It's almost touching the bottom of the barrel.
Atomic Heart and Wo Long don't even have publishers, each just developed by 1 person in Unity. GP definitely circling the drain. I doubt they make it to 2024.
