I don't see a reason for Slim's plates not to be compatible with the Pro.
Sony made the designs almost the same for a reason and they were made in the same timeline. Moreover they are simplifying the whole production to reduce the costs. That's why you have a Disc Drive as an add-on to Digital. They even sell plates for two versions in one box - if you have Digital you are still buying plates for Disc Drive.
Pro is higher then Slim and those stripes are that additional height. Top plates are just a bit higher in Pro.
Think about how bad it would be to sell plates for two consoles. People would be buying wrong ones for sure. Sony tries not to do that.
It will be 100% compatible. If it wouldn't then Sony probably wouldn't be making other plates for Pro anyway.

In a store in Spain we have a similar deal (you get points and then the disk drive is cheaper). But against my best judgement I've cancelled my order.Thanks for the advice

The guy from Cnet with the first hands on said they aren't compatible, if you look at photos side by side they aren't exactly the same size either.
The plates for the slim specifically say "model group slim" on PS Direct, Pro is not included in that.

In fact I'm gonna cancel and put my.money to a 50 series gpu for this small form factor build.

I just decided to not be part of the problem and keep that once in a life time 30th anniversary. And speaking of being part of the problem I'm not buying a 5000 series either, although they releases dangerously close to Civ VII. I'll wait to see how the AI upscaling in RDNA4 works.

The same goes with Disc Drive and we know it'll be compatible. Those descriptions were made before Pro announcement and weren't updated.
As for CNET guy - did he asked or was it his assumption? I don't have much trust for this type of sites and their knowledge of the subject. Usually they make a lot of mistakes because they are all around tech sites. They are more casual gamers types.
For what I see he thinks that they aren't compatible because of those stripes. He said something like 'it's different design'.
I bought black panels in September, this is how much I'm sure of it. Can I be wrong? Sure. Am I wrong?

It's so stupid. They know the design suits a vertical placement but sell the stand separately, how long do we have before they start selling the controller separately? I might just place an order for the stand in case the feet clips are shit.

Tbh I thought the OG's horizontal use of the stand, pretty poor. And I might actually prefer the feet, as they likely just click into place. But mine will be going horizontal. If I were going vertical, for sure I'd be buying the stand.
Theres definitely some eye brow raising bits of the design and the package. I wish they'd just given us everything in black. Controllers, the lot.
The below is from the PS Blog immediately after the reveal, and I find it almost deliberately ambiguous, it says you can swap out the covers "when they become available", for me that's implying the slim covers won't fit but it could also mean when the pro is available, I'd be at a conservative estimate 90% certain the slim covers are not fitting the pro, I already have the disk drive ready and the disk drive cover, covere the actual disk drive and nothing else for all intents and purposes.The guy from Cnet with the first hands on said they aren't compatible, if you look at photos side by side they aren't exactly the same size either.

Well, when you make a design for refresh and upgraded hardware you are thinking about similar language. Like the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro. Still they look different.
Now PS5 Slim and Pro look almost exactly the same, only the line that breaks the plates for two parts separates them. It's a type of design that can be misleading for consumers. Sony knows that yet it's a deliberated decision. It makes the production easier and reduces costs.
If they done all of that just to make the panels for Pro slightly different it would be not smart. And I don't think that Sony isn't smart regarding their hardware. As I stated they streamlined the whole production for a reason. The problem is that Sony is bad at communication for this generation.

Sony already said that the drive is compatible. I bought the drive. The drive comes with the plate. If the plates are incompatible and they didn't say so that is insanely shady. Especially when they saw the drives selling out after the pro was announced.

Disc Drive plates must by compatible, it's in the box and Pro won't have it. That's why it would be even more strange if they'd changed other plates but not this one. And if the plate for the drive and the plate without the drive are compatible (and we know they are) then the other bottom plate is also compatible (it's like mirrored design). So changing only two top plates makes even less sense.

You can see and the same time you don't see (I hope you understand what I mean). If we were talking about… let's say someone from Digital Foundry, I would be much more into believing that they know what they are saying. And yeah, they aren't the same size, Pro is taller and that's what we should expect from Slim with additional two stripes.
That's something more reliable, yet they also can be wrong. It's like the description on the Disc Drive on PlayStation Direct. They can have this type of info and are relying on that. This would only show that they have even bad communication inside the company (or outsource company that is working as a CS). But it's a product that's not in the stores yet and Sony themselves didn't answered officially all the questions that we might have after reveal.
In the end we need to wait. For me everything points out to compatibility (they would really made Pro design more separated from Slim if it wasn't for compatibility). I'm betting on it. If it's not compatible then in my opinion Sony made few bad decisions making this design and missed a few opportunities.

I get what you are saying, in some pics they look the same but in others they don't. I've tweeted the cnet guy about it and never gotten answer, also tweeted PS customer service and haven't heard back yet.

We're at the point that if the slim plates do work, Sony has a major communication problem.
If the slim plates don't work, I don't think it's a major deal, though I think it would be pretty anti consumer in terms of build design. The standard plates don't work on the slim and no one complained. The standard plates clearly won't work on the Pro and no one expects them to. The slim has only been on the market for a year, while the standard was on the market for 3 years. You'd think more people would be complaining about standard plates, but there was never an expectation there that they would work, but they kind of gave the impression here.
It's just bad communication and PR for largely no reason.

I would say the upgrade path is launch model to Pro for the majority. Plus there aren't many official slim plates even out. Still, they need to do a better job. At this point we're going to find out from someone who gets a review unit before Sony. Same with the heatsink. I just ordered one and if it's not compatible I'm inside the return period. I would say if you are interested in the plates just do that since we're less than 2 weeks from release.

I have black plates on my launch PS5. I'll probably live with a white PS5 Pro for some time regardless. It's not my highest priority for sure. I'll at least hold off to see if they do anything special for the PS2 Anniversary in the spring.
I actually cancelled my Pro pre-order as I decided I'll do a local trade in for my launch PS5.
I have no doubt the hard drive will be fine, but I do think Sony could be better about simple communication. They only lose in this situation. If the plates fit for the slim, you had bad PR and bad consumer feelings for absolutely no reason. If they don't fit, they could have just said so and avoided people buying new plates for launch and then feeling hard done upon.

I think Sony recognizes that they no longer have significant competition from Microsoft, but that's no reason to not have good practices around communication with your consumers.
I hope the problem is due to transition from Jim to Herman/Hideyaki, but I fear that's cope rather than hope. Sony is massively secretive with what is seemingly little benefit.

They tweet out so much junk on the playstation twitter account, but can't put out important product information on a big release.

Amazon has always been brutal for me for 1st day releases. I ordered a 2nd through Best Buy and whoever delivers first gets the sale and the other gets a refund.

I feel like this happened with PS4 launch but it ended up getting corrected. I had no issues with launch day PS5 on Amazon.

I was debating on switching to john lewis as well for the 2 year warranty. But switched from psdirect to argos because of having quite alot of vouchers from work.
Hopefully sony engineered this thing to be reliable like the base ps5 and not cheaped out on anything, so i don't end up regeretting it after a year.

They said 'we will have further announcement' and then went silent. We didn't had opportunity to order Pro 30th and no one said anything about that. People were waiting days after. I assume that in the end they'll make some competitions with few Pro 30th as prizes. Maybe. 20th Anniversary was bad but at least we had some chances of getting it.

I mean let's focus on the idea of limiting these devices in the first place. They left a ton of money on the table and for what? I was getting a Pro no matter what, but I would have purchased the 30th edition Pro bundle for 1000 dollars even though I have zero interest in the dual sense edge (probably would have sold it on ebay), but instead they're only getting a pro (700) and a dual sense (80) 780 out of me. They left 220 dollars on the table simply because... reasons...
I think they have a problem with communication because they have a problem with decision making. They're making lots of bad decisions/unforced errors and no one wants to communicate those.
They could have sold the 30th-anniversary edition PS5s for the whole year and they would have seen a boost, there was no reason to limit them at all. 12,300 becomes 123,000 just as easily, and it becomes 1,230,000 just as easily too...
I think Sony is making a ton of questionable decisions around design lately. They debuted PS Link and the PS5 Slim didn't have this integrated despite the fact that the PS Portal does. Both products came out at the same time. No answers, but I highly doubt PS Link is integrated into the PS5 Pro either. Yet another missed opportunity, that Apple would not have missed and they probably are only thinking about pushing more USB adapters, but its short sighted because here I am a high value customer who just won't buy their headsets let alone additional USB adapters.
That they sold out of anniversary edition units but you can still very easily pre-order the PS5 Pro is a great example of poor decision making.

Sony has been abysmal lately as a company and with all things regarding the Pro. Yeah, I have a chip on my shoulder with Sony right now. The Pro costs $700, no disc drive, no stand AND still no way to play online multipleyer without having to pay $80/year ...if you're someone who doesn't care about subsctiptions and "free monthly games", it feels like a slap in the face.
I just bought an awful Remake of Until Dawn two weeks ago for $60. Game runs badly, removed ALL thr original music because they didn't want to pay licensing fees, you can't skip cutscenes even ...just a product that Sony never would've thought acceptable during the PS4. Sony focusing on PC while continuing to treat PS5 owners like cash cows to be milked. Not even pushing games tech such as Horizon Remaster not having Ray Tracing, Last of Us Part 1 looking like a Cross Gen Game etc.
They've done a bad job showing off the capabilities of the Pro and securing Pro patches for many games. Still no Black Myth, Space Marine 2, Elden Ring, Astrobot, Ghost of Tsushima, Cyberpunk 2077, Silent Hill 2, FF16, Dying Light 2, Baulders Gate 3 and many others on the list ...
Im gonna stay angry at them until they start giving a fuck about their console audience because right now things are bleak...don't care if I "annoy" people who are excited about the Pro.

Yes, I thought the same thing. If they are so much into this specific number (which should be 12394), then they can do 120,394 or 1,231,994. 120k would probably sold out anyway. It should be directed more to fans and people who have nostalgia to PSX. It should be a celebration not disappointment. But it is what it is. At least I got 20th Anniversary PS4 (from scalpers though) which was more nostalgic for me then the PS5.

Exactly. Every customers who wanted one should have been able to get one. It's a real shame that Sony didn't see it that way.
I'm not too heart broken over it, but I have owned every PS system except the Vita, which I wish I had bought but also glad I didn't buy at the same time.
They have somewhat of an opportunity to fix this with the PS2 anniversary coming in March. They should offer both PS1 and PS2 themed consoles, but it's a disappointment that many of us won't be able to partake. I'm not going to sell my Pro just to get one nor am I buying two consoles (I did at one point toy around with the idea of a console for my room and my living room, but it's just not sensible).

My crazy theory. I think we will see 30th anniversary covers by early next year. The 30th anniversary was to throw off scalpers to chase a golden goose. If there wasn't, more of the pros if not most would have been eaten up by creating false demand.
Why would not Sony sell the covers later? It's free money. The only difference would be the serial number anyhow, which collectors will be able to get that version when pros are of diminished value for cheap.
