Jeff Grubb: It sounds like Sony has probably settled on a State of Play for June (rather than a Showcase)

"NateDrake says he hasn't heard anything about a May event from Sony this year. I haven't either, but that's because something's happening in June, it's a June thing. They're doing something in June. Now is that going to be a big Showcase? I don't think so. I've said a couple months ago that I heard that they were discussing, going back and forth about doing a Showcase or a State of Play. Sounds like they've probably settled on a State of Play, I'm not 100 percent about that aspect of it, it's probably a State of Play though. But I have heard June."

If it's a State of Play, I expect only 1-2 first party games at the show max. I expect they may even be Marathon and Fairgames.

At least I am expecting some good third party announcements, RE9 please and thank you

Ya it's time to admit that sony's first party offerings this generation have been lackluster. Too sporadic and not enough content honestly.
the thing is the games they have put out have been good. Astro Bot and Returnal are spectacular, and while people may have issues with the story and pacing, Horizon, God of War, and Spider-Man are all excellent mechanical evolutions of their predecessors too.

The issue is we are down to like... one game a year on average from Sony at this point, at least in terms of their flagship support. Their GAAS push really seems to have derailed things a little.

I am hoping at least that that God of War Greece spin off thing gets announced here, that would be a cool first party surprise.

No more live service or GAAS please. I hope too see more about Saros, GOY, Wolverine, and future projects of Blue point and Bend single player exclusives. I hope some Japan and Hero project games exclusives. I hope remastering Horizon and Last of us games stops.
We might see one last trailer of Ds2 and Stellar blade dlc. Probably some MS xbox games like HB2 and Gears of War. Hoping for God of War set in Egypt.

It's june, definitely june, nobody does this in may, it's a june thing, definitely a june thing.

Do we have an up to date thread about sony 1st party studios and what we know what they work on?
I feel like there is alot of unknown?
We know about Insomniac, because of the leak.
Ghost of Tsushima 2 is coming,
The 90s vibe game from Naughty Dog,
Saros from Housemarque.

But i cant think of much more? Am i just uninformed or are there potentially alot of unanounced games?

When all your studios are fucked because of gaas that was/is being canned, you have nothing to show, and settle with a shitty 30 minutes show with nothing but indie shovelware. Sony used to have the best shows during E3, and look what it turned into.

Also this type of "insider info" is so lame? Like anyone can predict when a new state of play is going to come just looking at historical data. And even if it's confirmed info is like ... Ok we now know when the next one will be...

There's a lot unannounced but they seem to have got into a pattern of "mostly" only showing what is coming out within the next 12 months.

I hope they break that cycle soon.

Naughty dog nor sony bend releasing anything has screwed them over alot too. Too many studios that simply aren't releasing games fast enough. Bluepoint are another one who got derailed by live service.

Seriously wondering when the fuck Insomniac is going to show Wolverine again. If it's not this summer I genuinely worry about that game.

They need to start greenlighting smaller scale projects, their current premium top end push means EVERY game takes 5-6 years to develop, which is obscene, a single cancellation can derail the whole thing

They should expand some of these studios so that they have the ability to work on 1 triple A game and 1 double A game at one time. So that if one thing fails, then you know you at least have a backup plan like you said.

Gran Turismo 8 was kinda confirmed, already.

Did you buy Lego Horizon Adventures, developed in less than 2 years?

Muuuuuuuuch easier said than done.

- New Yotei Trailer
- The entire Bungie team on their knees looking at the camera with tearful eyes begging us to pre order Marathon (it's later revealed an ex-employee had stolen some eye drops for the team to use on this video)
- Saros Gameplay reveal
- Media Molecule presents some quirky new game that's going to bomb.
- 2 new Chinese souls likes and 4 new Chinese anime waifu gacha games
- The big finale is Horizon GaaS.

Can't wait!

No because it didn't interest me

I did buy Sackboy A Big Adventure, which did interest me, if we are speaking of their smaller scale projects.
Stellsr Blade, Helldivers 2, Astro Bot... I mean, it looks like they have done so already. People not buying some of these because of lack of interest is just another story in the AA space.

I agree, but Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei is a great year. Even PS4 Sony rarely had years that were that good. Playstation has always been quality over quantity

True. I just think not having bluepoint 'demon souls remake isn't new' naughty dog, and sony bend not releasing anything has really screwed them over. They need more of there studios to start working on things that have the scale of an astrobot so that things can come out quicker. Maybe make some new studios that's sole priority is releasing double A games at a quick rate so that sony can fill some of the gaps in between the big releases.

Agreed that it's much easier said than done but they gotta figure something out. And i didn't buy lego horizon adventures tbh because lego games don't interest me personally.

Quality will always be better than quantity. Remember Sony had a lot in first 2 years where Microsoft had none. And yeah Microsoft has been releasing quite a bit but most are okay and not day 1 purchases. There's 2 big games coming this year.

All of those games are super successful, so I don't think people can be blamed for not buying them lol

The bigger issue is that two of those are from external partners, so they don't really help addressing the issues in Sony's own internal pipeline right now. They do help keep things going for us, as customers (especially if we like smaller games!), but at least on my part, I was specifically discussing Sony's pipeline issues, so games NOT developed by Sony aren't addressing that issue, unfortunately

Stellar Blade, Gran Turismo 7, Ratchet and Clark Rift, Helldivers 2, Rise of Ronin, Demons Souls are also spectacular SIE games.

Their last Showcase was in 2023. Tells you everything you need to know about the state of Sony.

But let's recap.
They started with a bang: Fairgames :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Continued with Foamstars , Marathon, Concord 🤡
Ended with Spider-Man 2. 🌈

Tbh i'll never compare Sony and Microsofts output ever again because it's unfair too. Microsoft bought 2 publishers so i expect them to release a bunch of games because they should be at this rate. And ya sony had alot if good stuff in the beginning of the generation and they definitely did open with a pretty nice bang i agree. Returnal still is one of the best games this entire generation in my book.

Ya it's time to admit that sony's first party offerings this generation have been lackluster. Too sporadic and not enough content honestly.
i called this back in 2021 when they started skipping E3s. I knew they didnt have any enough content to do a big showcase every year.

its not a suprise that their only big showcase this gen has been the 2023 one where they showed like 5 CGi games and Spiderman 2. If it wasnt for insomniac, sony first party would be in shambles.

A lot of it is due to poor management by herman and Jimbo. Cancelling Days Gone 2 or rather rejecting its pitch in 2019 meant no game from bend in 2025. Forcing them to do GaaS then cancelling it 6 years later is also retarded. Had Bluepoint started on Demon Souls 2 in 2020, or another remake, it wouldve been ready for 2025. But no, another studios wasted on gaas trash.

Guys like Cory, Neil, were stuck with 200 person teams in 2025 when their team sizes shouldve been doubled. The fact that Cory has now gone 7 years without showing a single screenshot of his new IP is insane. Cory has had issues with being productive, but you give him a big team and he typically delivers. Instead, nearly all of 250 SSM devs worked on Ragnorak for 5 years leaving Cory holding his dick. Housemarque has now gone 4 years with nothing to show. Another team that shouldve been doubled in size to ensure they can get games out faster.

But when 60% of your budget is going into GaaS, there isnt enough money left to give it to your other teams. The ones that made you successful. The ones that literally resurrected the Sony brand after the fuckups of the PS3 launch. I havent seen first party studios abandoned like this, ever.

To be fair, Guerrilla already figured that out, but they manage it in a co-development scale. Also, it would take several years to do that kind of restructuring.

My biggest issue is that this somehow became an argument this generation. People talk about those smaller Japan Studio games, but how many of them came from the internal teams? I know that the likes of Tokyo Jungle, Rain and Everybody's Golf sure as hell did not.
Sony doesn't have the perfect internal pipeline, but I don't get how or why they're singled out. Naughty Dog releasing a new game 7 years later is not even a rare case in the current industry; you have Retro Studios taking 11 years, ffs.
Have Santa Monica Studio, Team Asobi, San Diego Studio, Guerrilla, Sucker Punch, Firesprite, Housemarque, Insomniac and Polyphony Digital delivered less than what anyone expected?
