To be fair to them, a Series X can't play all the games that were launched for 360, despite a lot of them being made available with the backwards compatibility programme. ...And that's an Xbox.

I've no doubt this will become the battle line though for warriors online however.

I understand your point (it's about BC though), but this one is different.

- The idea here is that if you bought a game on the Xbox console, you can't play it on Xbox Rog Ally (unless it's a title with PlayAnywhere enabled).
- If you bought a game on Steam/Epic, you can play it on Xbox Rog Ally (it does not have to be PlayAnywhere).

That's because it's a PC (Rog Ally has always been a PC) with Windows 11 running on it.

This is a good point. But it also underscores why unifying PC stores and the Xbox store on one device is important. Go get the game that you want on the store that offers it cheapest (Steam, Battle, Gog Epic, ...) and play it with the same Xbox experience on the go. And if it's an XGS game, play it day one on game pass on the same device. Plus play all the 3rd party stuff that comes to game pass without needing to buy anything. With the same UI. That sells it to me and in the words of Jaffe, "if you're looking for a handheld and you're not getting this one, I don't know what to tell you".

Who is Gaffe? There is nothing here that elevates this one handheld above all others in my mind. No idea how this Gaffe guy says that without knowing the price.

But all other PC handhelds do this. For instance, you have an Asus Rog Ally or a Legion Go, then you can download the game from Steam / Epic / Xbox Play Anywhere. You can also run Game Pass.

This new device does not offer anything new other than the UI - which is not a USP as every device offers a different UI anyway.

Yes, Jaffe my bad. And come on just the ergonomics alone set it apart. Never mind the hardware specs and the stripped down windows version that it will come with. I agree that price will be critical

Other devices do not streamline my library across stores. I have to go get my games from the store where I bought them. They also boot to the windows desktop. They don't feel like holding an xbox controller and so on..
The truth is there are many unique aspects if one is willing to acknowledge them.

Streamline is a good way to put it and if someone hasn't gotten into handhelds yet it might help tempt someone

Its not a great selling point for anyone to ditch any handheld they already own

The ergonomics do look very nice. There is a difference between saying this thing has pros against other handhelds and suggesting no other handhelds are even a viable option. Jaffe is known for hyperbolic bullshit like that. I bought a $20 grip for my Ally X and the ergonomics are great as well now. If Xbox Ally X was available today then I'd definitely consider it, but those OS upgrades are coming to my Ally X as well. Would I pay $100-200+ for a 10-15% performance boost? Probably not.

I take it you won't ditch yours but let's not generalise. That being said, if I had just bought a handheld, I would probably just wait for the new Windows CE to come to all handhelds and ride it out until my hardware can no longer play the latest games before upgrading to the Xbox Ally X or to the in house Xbox handheld if it really exists and has come out by then.

Both Rog Ally and Legion Go combine games from other stores into their own UI. Heck, Onexplayer and Aokzoe do that.

This is speculation and fanboy nonsense. Do you think Sony cares that a pc handheld that has access to there games that's another piece of pc portable hardware for them to sell games on. It's not like there games are on gamepass or anything.

I tend to consider you someone with some judgment and logic and avoid double standard.

1- First, I don't see the point of demanding that Xbox users be critical and actively demand that MS comply with its BC requirements. I don't know what you can demand from MS in this regard when it offers the best BC and the best conditions compared to other manufacturers.

2- Future Xbox Hardware ? I suppose we have to wait and see what the plan is. For now, you have the information and declaration that they have a full team of engineers working to offer BC for future Xbox desktop hardware.

It would be curious and funny to return to this thread and comments if in one, two or tree year, MS announces BC for its new Xbox or even for Windows PC!!!

4- This XBOX Ally is a device independent of XBOX consoles. The "this is an Xbox" thing is part of a campaign that also calls an Amazon Fire Stick an Xbox. Yes, is a marketing campaing that can be missleading and confuse casual users, but is not new and not was opened with the XBOX Ally.

Some of you are jumping to conclusions about what it offers and ignoring the fact that what you're demanding is impossible, given that there's no current technology for a handheld to offer BC with games from more powerful home consoles.

And even ignoring this aspect, the fact is that no handheld console from any company has offered full native BC, much less compatibility with the home console at the time. PSP and PSVita were PlayStation.

5-The main selling point of this Xbox Ally is its new OS and software. Then there's everything related to game support and compatibility.

In fact, it's a product aimed at a broad potential user base beyond the XSeries user which would certainly find this product a great complement to their home XBOX console, even if there's no full native compatibility (because access to the catalog can be achieved through other means).

I mean, I find it absurd and embarrassing that it's gotten to the point where people are arguing and mocking others' purchasing decisions.

Not for everyone (in fact, they're a minority) is a requirement for buying a new gaming device. The most important thing is support for current and future games and the catalog. There's no better option on the market for this, and so it's normal that some people are interested in the product beyond whether or not it allows compatibility or native BC support for another product they own.

Well, I guess some people Will do the same thing as I do with my MegaDrive, Super Nintendo, Saturn, Dreamcast, PSX, PS2, PSP, PS Vita, Gamecube, X360, PS3... Take care of it and turn to the secondhand market if it breaks down. Like any collector.

Then there are the vast majority of users who only look at new hardware or consoles for the new games, the catalog, and the support It will receive during the generation.

It would just have to do more than have a dedicated button to access Gamepass for me to buy it vs keeping my Steamdeck

Maybe I am missing something else about it

you can even get something like Playnite that does that for free and it can download & install from various storefronts (depending on the plug-in support)

plus you can have the big box mode boot from launch so you never go into desktop

Nice. I'll need to check out Playnite. I have Heroic Launcher on my Ally X which pulls in your library across other stores. Does not integrate with Steam UI though, I don't think. That is a cool feature they have for the new Windows UI. I like how you can tab across the various stores.

It objectively does way more than have a new button but hey, the steam deck is a very good device too.

I think that was always the idea? Difference being that MS OS will run Xbox games natively, aswell as steam or epic store games.

I like that it has one unified library for all games no matter what store I bought them on. Really hoping they make this OS available to current ally users and handheld gaming PCs in general.


But the real kicker will be when this OS shows up in the next Xbox with the multiple store fronts.

As a matter of fact - the current handhelds do. If that's one's preference, they can install and Playnite to:
  1. Set up their handheld device to show all their games across different platforms in one place (Steam, Epic, Gog, MS, Game Pass, Humble, etc.)
  2. Boot directly into gaming mode.
It is certainly possible.

And because it's open-source and has plugins, you also have customization options on top of it - which the fixed Xbox UI will not have. You can add themes and customize settings to truly make it how you like your game library to appear.
