Emphasis on the word "my" I suppose. So my xbox library basically consists of gamepass games and games from previous gens. The backwards compatibility I wouldn't be to concerned about...as I have a box that can play those already. How often do I go back and play those? Not often. So I would mainly be concerned with modern games from this era, which basically means gamepass. Other than that, make most my Steam games work and I'm good.....................................but not for $1000

The main draws for me is that I only have a switch as a handheld. So the portability is nice. The Xbox ergonomics is huge for me and having the next gen of tech inside is also a big plus. I'd be willing to pay $800. At the price it's at, it's almost certain it will come down by the end of next year

Low adoption leads to concerns about further support. I assume anything that works on Steamdeck would work on this device, but like what about UI updates. We all know Xbox needs at least a few tries to get it right and even then there no guarantee its gonna work out. Then there's the whole Linux vs Windows in terms of game performance. We are already looking at an expected performance dip due to it being a handheld. Need to see how this performs on a windows device after Xbox has made it's adjustments to the OS.

With faulty hardware, do we RMA through ASUS? Didn't they just go through a nightmare scenario investigated by Gamers Nexus?

These high-end ($700+) PC Handhelds aren't targeting the handheld console market. They are essentially alternatives to gaming laptops, and that's the market these devices target: people interested in gaming laptops. Once people understand this, they can better evaluate something like the ROG Xbox Ally X. This isn't a console so it doesn't need high adoption to be profitable, and it's just a PC so it will get the same level of support as other PCs made by ASUS. The ROG Xbox Ally X is made by ASUS so of course, they would handle the RMA process.

I dunno I think they are being at least a little bit coy. It sounds like a PC that will play Xbox BC. They mention multiple stores with every device.

I doubt we'll see anything priced like a console, that has a true "next-gen-console" inside (meaning devs will have something that isn't just their Windows gaming mode to target.). They'll call it a console though lol

I have been telling people here for quite sometime the next Xbox console would run Steam, though I got laughed at, a lot :)

I know it sounds like PR talk but honestly it's a message I agree with. I hardly have time for new games forget about the old ones. All I really need is Mass Effect to be with me and I can get that for like $10 on any ecosystem. Tales of Vesperia is a bonus but not a need. With the masses hardly buying\beating games I can imagine they don't care much either. You'll lose most of your "whales" though cause they will care.

I am sure a lot of people feel that way, I just get a sense that will be the new marching orders very soon

As many games as I have purchased over the years there is just a small handful of games I would hate to lose but can always keep my older machines around for those I guess

I also am not only referring to Xbox, its by far the biggest reason I bought the disc drive for my PS5 Pro, to play like 2 old games that I still play :)

That's a good point. Can't argue that. I think because Xbox's name is on it...I may subconsciously think it's in the same vein as the Switch 2 or consoles...when that really isn't fair. I think it really boils down to actual use. How it feels to play. Do I feel like I'm playing on a PC or a game console? Xbox's new UI would go a long way to determining that either way. If it works seamlessly and functions close to what we see on a Series X/S that's pretty conclusive. We'll see if they can pull it off I guess.

That's how it should be with their strategy to spread the Xbox brand out of the console bubble and unlock it from specific hardware. If "Xbox" means something specific they've failed.

Look at what Valve is doing with Steam. You don't know if someone playing through Steam on PC use a Lenovo or Razer or home built PC or if they use Linux or Windows or have a AMD or Nvidia graphics card. It's just Steam on PC.

In the end "Xbox" will be a launcher, accessed on all kinds of hardwares, that also have Microsoft specific hardware as an option and it's own OS/UI. Similar to Steam and Steam Deck and other SteamOS devices.

If they could they would 100% have the Xbox App on Playstation 5 and Switch 2 too, including Gamepass. But Sony and Nintendo don't want that, so for now Xbox and Gamepass will be on… well… everything else.

If this is true, then I cant wait to see what made up excuses MS fanboys create to defend this and claim it a as success.

And there is other stuff that we dont know: How will the "Xbox" in the ROG will work: Is just windows with an UI or a more Xbox/console version of it? Am I stuck with the MS and other "approved" sources of video games? Would people that buy this travesty need a Gold Gamepass Core to play online?

Not similar to Steam at all. A Lenovo device is still just a Lenovo device. Valve isn't trying to make everyone believe everything is Steam just because their app runs on the device. That's just Microsoft and their "this is an xbox" nonsense. So 100% disagree on Microsoft's "strategy". I think it is absurd.

Valve don't have a stupid ad but Steam is Steam though, no matter where you're accessing it. Sometimes there are differences like if you're on a Steam Deck or a Mac or Linux. But it's still Steam.
That's what Microsoft is trying to achieve.
Once they're done with their transition to PC Xbox will be the Xbox App, even when you're on one of their consoles (that is actually a PC).

Well Phil basically said as much in interviews, in those same interviews he said the loss leader console model wasn't sustainable.

Those statements plus Bond mentioning a heavy focus of backwards compatibility on "next gen hardware" plus all the other stuff MS is doing labeling PCs as "Xbox" makes me think their next "home console" will be PC based with full Xbox BC. By being PC based I mean the "next gen Xbox" portion is just going to be their new Windows gaming mode.

In the end it's my belief it's all a push to gain market share in the PC market by having more companies port games to the windows store.

Will have to wait and see how its implemented as honestly, I don't know, I just knew it was coming or let me rephrase, I knew quite some time ago they were pushing hard for this, like 2 years ago maybe would have to look back at texts

Didn't Xbox say directly in their video their next console would have multiple store front?

I mean I know these companies lie and MS/Xbox is great at lying and misleading, so I am not saying that's 100% proof

But I knew it was coming :)

Like if it's not a PC, how is it running Steam? Is Valve making a specific Xbox version of Steam? And what Steam games would run on that strange Steam version if it's not a PC? I think it's more of what's a PC. If the new "Xbox" can boot into "Windows Lite" mode and run Steam and Epic launchers, is that an Xbox or PC?

Either way, you provide a ton of great info and commentary HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 and don't have to prove jack to anyone.

And whether Xbox, Hybrid or PC, it's going to be interesting to see what MS does. Personally I just want "Windows Lite" option available for regular gaming PCs and other handhelds.

There is no need for personal attacks.

Also, MS could do both, have OEM "Xbox" PCs and new Xbox console hardware that could have overlapping functionality.

HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 was vetted by the mods as far as what he has said in the past. If that isn't enough, K KeplerL2 is backing him up. Both have excellent reputation for knowing what they are talking about. This isn't "trust me bro" bullshit coming from these guys.

In all fairness I stopped short in the vetting process but I proved who I game with and the circle of people who I actually know very well that make these decisions in the gaming world

It makes no sense to keep doing isolated console bubble devices while they're going with a plan to have all your games from multiple stores not tied to any hardware.
A dedicated Xbox console is exactly the opposite of their plan.

And I don't see how they can have multiple stores if it's not a PC. Well, in theory I guess they can but then store holders would need to port their storefronts and game devs would have to do ports of their games.

For a multi store scenario to work in any way people expect they would need to run Windows underneath it all, to run the existing installers and put the files where they're supposed to go and use the drivers and system libraries etc blablablah. I don't actually know anything about low level programming… But I don't believe MS can pull a multi store device out of their hat without turning the device into a proper PC. They can have have a console UI layer on top of it all, but that's about it.

Well....we had private conversations about this stuff because I wasn't necessarily buying it either. But since then everything is pretty much lining up with what you said. K KeplerL2 corroborating it all.......well, that's that in mind.
 
Like I have said from day 1, if they allow me to play EVERY game I have purchased on my series X (over 700) NATIVELY then I will purchase this thing. If not, and it's only cloud/streaming bullshit, they can go and get fucked.

It depends on what they are trying to do. As far as making sense, that stopped on MS side with Kinect focus and TV/Sports/DRM push. Xbox hasn't made sense or had good management for over a decade now.

Yeah I don't really care to be honest, if it doesn't make sense then it doesn't make sense, doesn't matter if Phil himself would say they're doing it.
You're on PC. How can Steam run on an Xbox console that isn't a PC and how can regular PC versions bought on regular Steam run on that device???

Yep, that's the burning question on how they will be doing BC. We won't know for a while, IMO.

As far as the handheld goes, of course it won't play any of your games natively unless they are Play Anywhere.

But I think it would take a deep collaboration with Valve, and some lower level black magic coding than what they've been doing on Linux. And why would they help each other on this journey? We'll likely see competing SteamOS devices on the market the same time as Xbox branded devices with a new Windows console-UI.

Nope I just don't see it as a realistic scenario.

Sorry HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 if I'm too harsh here. Just don't understand how they'll put the needed puzzle pieces together. And they're all in on the PC merger right now, even said in the AMD partnership video that the plan is to make Windows the best place to play.
