Steam Frame, Steam controller and Steam Machine Revealed

Hot swapping game libraries via SD cards is pretty epic, like you can have all your indies and smaller games on an SSD in steam deck, pop it out, plug it into your steam machine and your good to go with a huge library. That's pretty innovative.

Yeah, I like it as well. PC gaming is tacky as fuck most of the time so I'm glad Steam is sticking with the simpler more industrial design especially since this is designed to sit under your tv.

90% of pc gaming is ugly as fuck and this device will blend in much better. The rumors are that PlayStation are also going for a more simple design as well.

A fucking wet sloppy turd is better design then the monstrosity that is the PS5. That PoS with its retarded stand to hold it level sidewise is the worst designed console of all time.
 
Steam Deck OLED is probably my favorite gaming device ever tbh. Nice snappy UI like a console and wide open to mess around with like a PC. Also have learned a lot about Linux from using it so much. When I first looked at Deck at the reveal I thought it looked fuckin stupid. I already see the appeal in Gabecube so long as the pricing is right.

But I don't think Sony, Ms, or Nintendo are gonna lose sleep over this. It's not gonna be a mass market device. Valve isn't gonna massively subsidize it. Not gonna be available at retail most likely.

Even if other companies make these it's still a linux device running Proton. It's not gonna attract the CoD/ GTA/ Fortnite crowd who accounts for the vast bulk of revenue on consoles. It's gonna attract morons like Topher Topher and I who absolutely do not need this but will buy it anyway.
 
did they announce any easy way to mirror the headset to another screen?

That's a pretty critical feature in my case. I often have my son want to show me some of what he's playing in VR, and on the Meta app I can instantly stream his live view to my phone. And I played a few VR games that my wife wanted to play with me by watching on the TV (we did that through The Seventh Guest, for instance), and it's easy to do that with Quest as well, stream to a local browser and let someone else watch you.

I can't keep following the news for AMD side but didn't they have FSR4 working on RDNA 3 ?

What this machine needs above all is Valve making an "optiscaler" sort of upscaler detection for any FSR2/3, XeSS, DLSS2+ and automatically switch to FSR 4.

No modding

Should be seamless.
 
I think the biggest factor here is price.

The GabeCube is somewhat underwhelming hardware wise, but at say $399/450 it would be pretty good deal.

As far as the headset goes, the specs seemed OKish, but not amazing. If it's $1200, that's a non starter.

This thing is going to need to be priced at or below Steam Deck OLED cost for it to make any sense.

Otherwise, why wouldn't I just buy a Steam Deck and a dock?

This actually may help them. Valve will inevitably do a better job at selling the idea of having a semi-custom gaming PC under your TV. A year after this releases, they will be offering a more powerful option for customers interested in such a device. It will also be able to play more games.

Or it could all crash and burn. Time will tell.

Yup. Now that we know it can be done AMD needs to stop being assholes and allow it to happen. Who cares if it runs worse, it still should be an option. FSR3 is awful.

The original Steam Machines released in 2015 and required games to have a dedicated Linux port to be able to run. Valve has put a ton of work into SteamOS and Steam Deck is a perfect example because it runs almost anything without the need for dedicated ports.

Yeah, while it grew on me a bit over time, I still think it's generally ugly. I think the Digital Slim looks much better but I'd rather them go back to more of a PS4ish design.
 
I might get the Steam Controller if the haptics will be supported by many games actually.
Is there maybe a list of supported games, yet?

Nice! Special thanks to Sony (shit first party output this gen, cross platform), Microsoft (cross platforming), and Nintendo (anti-consumer bs) for making this an easy transition this gen.

Maybe, but it's really going to depend on the price.

A 512 MB OLED is $549. Given the specs of the box, I can't see paying much more than that for it.

There's a certain point where it either makes sense to build your own PC or buy one of the Windows Handhelds and a Dock and just install SteamOS or Bazzite on it.
