Linus tech tips is disappointed that the steam machine won't be priced like a console.

I do think there's a market for a kind of universal prebuilt that delivers similar performance to its console counterparts, even if it costs a bit more.

This is 5 years too late.

If a console player asked me about jumping to pc, I'd never recommend this thing at an 800 dollar price or whatever. Get a prebuilt with a 5060 or 9060 XT.

And with Full Screen Experience coming to Windows Desktop what if offers has become even less relevant.

And they would lose a lot of money on each one sold, I think they want this to be low volume on purpose because that's all they are able to produce as their size company

They can't order millions of parts like Microsoft or Sony Nintendo

I think Valve takes a big part of the games sold revenue on Steam.
Even at a loss from pricing it lower than cost to manufacture or on par. You make the revenue back from the store purchases.
As most Steam users know. That library soon fills.

Whatever they do they need to sell it for as cheap as possible or they risk sitting on a mountain of stock. $300 might be unrealistic but those specs aren't worth much more than that.

They aren't making a mountain of stock so that's not a problem

The frame for example is only forecast to manufacture 500k

Plus you can tweak settings in pc games to get the performance profile you desire. But Gaf will go on making dumb assertions regardless. A lot of you guys have no idea what you're talking about, it's hilarious.

Compare it to the prices of NUC-style mini PC's. Then remember that its guts isn't a mass-produced APU, its a frankensteined hybrid that requires 8gb of GDDR6 so your already way above the budget of a mid-tier part of that class. Also due to this is draws more power and requires more cooling.

One would also assume that if its being sold as a quasi-console, it will include a controller which will further bump up the price.

This is absolutely not a $300 box.
 
It's a weird place to be with subsidizing what is in the end still an open PC platform, if you subsidize open PC hardware where you can install another OS and the value becomes too good, there would probably be hundreds of thousands of sales to people that never intend to buy a game on steam on there, at least. It's not really a console model where it's all locked down and you can reliably make the money back on taking a fraction of game sales later.

300$ is cheaper than a ps5 and it's PC that makes no sense, pc's in general cost more than consoles

It offers more than a ps5 so at a minimum it should be 50-100$ more

The issue is that there's no reason for anyone to subsidize any component. I doubt AMD are going to offer the sort of volume deals with Valve that they would to Sony or Microsoft both of whom can safely guarantee 20 million units sold.

Which means component pricing will be drawn from the PC side of the business with pricing appropriate so as not to destabilize the rest of their line-up and inventory.

The Steam machine being successful really only benefits Valve, and they aren't a major player in hardware.

I think 500 is the fair price realistically and would still sell like hotcake but they'll try to bank on people viewing it as a cool little premium like steam box and up the price due to it. It's probably still going to sell a good amount even if it's priced at 600 for the base and 700 for the 2TB version even with worse specs than the pro due to the amount of games on it and able to use it like a PC so that would give it quite a bit more value than console due to a lot more games and something people would always have it on when they're home like internet browsing etc etc. If my PC fails right now, I'll probably get one and connect my mouse and keyboard to it and use it as a backup PC for a few years until Elder Scrolls VI comes. But...I would just spend double that and get a more future proof computer instead of a Steambox not sure yet.

But if the base version is already 700 while the 2TB version is 800 then that's the point where I see the sales not being good.

Basically around 500 for the base and 600 for the 2TB version would be a super big bargain with a massive amount of sales even a lot of people with a much better PC would just spare the extra 500 to get one for reasons like it being a cool little steam cube thing or something they can carry and hook it to their friends tv, grandpa's house during a visit etc etc so still better than a laptop for those situation.

600 for the base and 700 for the 2TB would still get decent sales I think but definitely lower than 500 too 600.

700 for the base version and 800 for the 2TB version is where things starts to really go downhill for them.

500 for the Base and 600 for the 2TB version is probably the most fair balance for both Steam and the consumers. Selling for less than that would hurt one side and selling for more would hurt the other.

Although I still think it's possible a 600 dollar and 700 dollar for the 2TB version could still end up selling decently.
