I gotta say, that tutorial puzzle was retarded. If it's the one where you get the palm strike he's referring to. It tells you "hang from the middle of the powered machine and palm strike." Meanwhile you are standing in the middle of a big machine, and the piece they're referring to you have to climb out of the machine and climb a wall to get to.

There was an icon in the minimap pointing you to the machine outside of that pit, but took me a minute to notice it. Not a great puzzle though. Certainly not going to make me forget about some of the stuff in BoTW.

Playing this Game on Quality mode Series S is tortute...

custonho-custonho-obara.gif
I saw a video of it and honestly it seems doable to me especially compared to performance mode. Jesus. Some parts were just texture less, absolutely ridiculous.

I've got about 8 hours into the game so far, and it's a really obtuse game, not a game for yellow paint gamers :messenger_winking_tongue:. I'm on PS5 Pro, so it looks and runs well. The story is pretty simple. There are so many paths you can take in this game, it's overwhelming. The sandbox is huge, and what I'm currently enjoying is the unarmed combat. I roll into bandit camps and just start slamming dudes lol, throwing people off cliffs is fun too. If you're looking for a deep and emotional story that will make you cry, then move on.

Controls ain't great, but I've been able to work through them fine. I can see folks wanting to refund, however, if the controls are too annoying for them.

Haven't played yet but just seeing some of the videos on the game, it *looks* like a game that feels bad to control.

Let's see how it is in person.

How are they compared to RDR2?
Rdr2 controls are intuitive. They added lag on purpose to give it a weighty feel.

Crimson desert on the other hand feels like it was designed by someone who has never played a game in their life. Someone whose every instinct is wrong. Someone who hasn't played a game since the ps2 era when game controls were this obtuse. Its like every intuition they had was wrong.

I can list examples but you really have to play it to understand just how odd it feels. Literally everything about the menu navigation and controls is off. Up is down, left is right, its kinda funny actually.

Is there a reason why everything looks brand new in Crimson Desert? The buildings. The streets. The clothes, the armor, the shields, the weapons. Everything. Even the trees and bushes look like they are made from plastic and just placed there. And not just new, but generic.
There was always something that bugged me about the ingame footage that I couln't put my finger on and I think this is it. The world, while technically beautiful, feels very artificial and not lived in.

Better, imo. Not as sluggish.

The basic controls are exactly like any other game. The tutorials show using LB to point to where you want to jump and LB to point to who you want to talk to and such, but LB in those cases are really unnecessary. That threw me off at first as well. Just push jump if you are not wanting precision jumping. Or just press talk when near someone you want to talk to. The LB aiming function isn't really necessary. People also made a big deal about toggling running, but I don't see the problem there at all.

I haven't done much combat other than the opening section so perhaps that's where things get wonky with the controls. I'll have to wait and see.

YouTubers are at least (for the most part) working for themselves. Working as a "game journalist" for a pitiful wage is straight up cuck behavior at this point. It's why there is absolutely no one worth listening to in professional games journalism. They are almost universally mentally ill and effeminate losers who are afraid of going against any kind of consensus. Anyone worth their salt has gone independent.

And that "less education" comment is hilarious.

besides a lot of "game journalists" dont even like games, they at most play roblox and fortnite, meanwhile youtubers are generally passionate gamers.

Sooooooo many red-flags in that video.

"I know I shouldn't really be able to finish this in two weeks, but editorial policy is forcing me to."

Yeah, treating it as a death march is really going to enhance enjoyment! Hence, resentment over being forced to do side stuff, annoyance that sequences don't finish quicker, etc.

That's enough to bin any review as irrelevant to me because I know for a fact that I'm not going to play it like that. If a game starts to grate on me I'm not going to force myself to power through it just to say "I finished it!" What sort of lunatic makes a rock for their own back like that ?
you've absolutely got a point. otoh, i remember getting through the first of those orchestrated combat scenarios in assassin's creed: odyssey, & simply noping out of doing any more of''m. which i could do. don't know if they're optional in crimson desert...

anyway, i hated the military aspects of that gamer, which's why the ones in this game brought back bad memories...

It's up to mostly positive in Steam now. Not bad considering it was sub 60 yesterday. Anyway I'm thinking positively of the game but I have never once left a proper review so even though I want to help the game I won't. They'll at least get positive word of mouth from me.

Just maybe an hour, probably less, in on PS5 Pro... so a few truly minimalist first impressions.

I can see why people are a little put off by the weirdly convoluted controls and UI which if I'd have to guess are a consequence of 7 years worth of feature creep! But it all seems like the sort of thing that you will adapt to over time, and to be honest I find it deeply ironic how at the same time a lot of players complain about all games "being too samey" but then freak out when the controls don't fit the standard template!

Visuals and Sound are as good as advertised, voice acting seems decent.

Tutorial really is poor, you need to approach with patience as it just continually throws gimmicks at you. The funny thing is, if this game came out 20 years ago it'd come with a thick manual explaining stuff in a structured manner so it wouldn't give such a bad first-impression... I mean there are some really basic errors like the initial combat tutorial throwing button prompts on the screen in the midst of a series of fights with no indication of what action is going to result! Is it a block ? Is it a strike ? Is it a special ? Dunno! but hit the button and see!

Seems like they've already at least started to address some of the criticisms of the pre-launch builds with a storage chest in the first rest tent.

Short version, it seems promising, but I really need to sit down for a solid chunk of time to sink into the game to get a proper sense of it all. So I'd say to anyone with a busy life, or at least a lot of distractions, this may not be the game for you.

This seems like a "chewy" sort of game, tasty but definitely not to be gulped down.

TBC.

same. As of now I literally did the first 10 minutes but its really good and honestly surprised that I am liking it more than most

This is one of those weird games where I see valid points for both the good and bad on this game, yet I still strangely enjoy it despite that. It's clearly an MMO masked in single player's clothing, where the story (or lack thereof) isn't really the point, the point is just to explore and discover. In that sense I do find the exploration enjoyable, it's the kind of game I can multitask with something else in the background playing like music or a podcast. The combat has been enjoyable to me, reminds me strangely of Assassins Creed Valhalla and Dragon's Dogma if they had a child. The voice acting is passable but since there isn't really much of a story here, it's maybe not as large of an issue.

The more I think on it, this game is like the Korean Starfield (though not in space and with better combat). They have quite a few similarities with their positives and negatives. The world is vast and wide, but while it appears like there's a ton to do it's largely MMO side quest style busy work. It's strangely linear in progression despite its appearances otherwise.

Just accidentally discovered that opening the armor wheel and choosing your helmet, Kliff will raise the face plate (if your helmet has one), choosing it again will make him lower it again.

Steam download is done, gonna test it tomorrow morning.

As an appetizer, I just watched Mack's 'Worth A Buy' review, it's hilarious as ever :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Equally bad. RDR2 was a masterpiece despite it's terrible controls, it's left to be determined if CD will raise up to a level to where most people will be willing to deal with them to experience what it has to offer. The more I play it the more I come around, but people defending the controls is just cope. If they released this game with actual decent controls and then switched to these a month later, everyone defending them would say that they are shit and that they need to revert them, but this is what we have so people who are enjoying the game will stan for obviously shit controls because they have no choice.

Rdr2 controls are intuitive.
They're so intuitive that literally every person I've ever seen play it ends up punching their horse or shooting people accidently when they are trying to do something else. There is nothing intuitive about RDR2s controls. People got used to them, but if you hand a controller to ANY new player they will fuck the controls up repeatedly because they are the exact opposite of intuitive and there are a million videos showing as much.

"instinctive" "Easily understood and simple to use"

Literally none of that applies to RDR2s controls.

Be real, how many times have you accidently jumped when trying to pick something up? How many times have you had to perfectly align the camera to be able to talk to someone or pick something up? The controls are clearly not like any other game. They're slow, sluggish, they are finicky, and sometimes very obtuse. Intentional or not they have that RDR2 annoyance that turned a lot of people off. Even in the beginning tutorial there are just stupid button combinations, like R1 + R2 at the same time, or L2+R1 followed by tapping R1 and then hit L1 when you are on the target. It's the problem with this being an MMO that was converted to a single player game, they have a million things to do and a million button combinations so they had to Frankenstein this control system to make it playable. It's like playing Falcon 4.0 on a controller. And it's the same way on keyboard with just different strange combinations. Maybe this is the best they could come up with, but that doesn't make them good or like other every other game.

I said the basic controls are like any other game and they are. I'm talking about walking and moving around. The way some people talked you would think you have to use the d-pad to move so I was being trying to be clear that they are not completely foreign. But yeah, I've short pressed X instead of long pressed a few times until I got the hang of it. I've already said elsewhere that the controls ain't great, but obviously they don't bother me as much as they bother you and others so folks will just have to decide for themselves. There are some annoyances, but I've largely gotten used to them. Again, we will see if that continues to be the case as I go. I've barely scratched the surface from what I understand.

Edit: I don't know what R1 + R2 is supposed to do. Do you mean RB + LB to toggle the blinding flash thing? I don't know that other move you describe either. Which is that?
