Skyward Sword review thread [Newest Reviews - Cubed3 10/10, GC: A, AusGamers: 7/10]

Midna wasn't a problem in my opinion. I actually liked her so much it was pretty much the only redeeming thing about playing as Wolf Link. Twilight Princess was one of the few games I even bothered to turn on the speaker for just to hear the sword slashing and Midna occasionally giggling.

Venturebeat Review - 65/100

Haven't read it. Probably won't in case of spoilers.

Yeah, I stopped reading at this part..

I originally started this review with a fairly lengthy recap of Nintendo’s many past digressions culminating with The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which wasn’t just a bad game, but also an inexcusably horrid business decision that severely burnt loyal Nintendo fans, even the ones who were too ignorant to realize it.

TP, by any stretch of the imagination, and from anyone with a hint of objectivity, wasn't a 'bad game' as the author so confidently proclaims. A 'bad game' doesn't get a fucking 95% average on metacritic 5 years later. Everything is opinion, sure, but the guy can use some humble pie before making such a proclamation as 'fact'. He doesnt say he 'didnt enojy TP for XXX reason', instead he plainly states it was a 'bad game'. So yeah, I'd say the rest of the review is useless.

The dungeons aren’t even that big or impressive once you do get to them. Having just played Skyrim and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, the entirety of Skyward Sword’s on-foot areas feels like it could fit into a corner of the map in either game.

There's some stuff about Nintendo being arrogant and how the Wii sucks as well. :lol.

Blablabla Elderscrolls is better blablabla also why can't it be like this game also blabla

How can he even call himself a reviewer? That's all I basically got from it. If he wrote it just to troll he did a good job I'd say.

when I clicked on that link, there were two direct links to MW3 and BF3 in the dropdown menu. I think I have a feeling why he rated Zelda so low.

The only thing I'm sifting through reviews for are their impressions on the controls. This guy sorta has me worrying that it'll turn out to be TP v2:

Venturebeat said:
Enemies have been designed around the motion controls this time (rather than the tacked-on control scheme seen in Twilight Princess). For example, man-eating plants may have a vertical or horizontal mouth, and you’ll need to slice accordingly with the Wii remote to defeat them. Humanoid enemies come equipped with weapons that they’ll block with, requiring you to circumvent their defenses in order to strike from a vulnerable direction. Unfortunately, even after all this time, the controls just don’t work consistently. I can’t count the number of times I slashed from the right in real life only to have Link stab forward, or some other maddening misread of the Wii MotionPlus control. Most of the time you can just flail about wildly until you eventually get lucky and hit an enemy, stunning them and allowing you to unleash a flurry of sword attacks, but you’ll eventually encounter certain enemies that will penalize you for the Wii’s flawed technology. Soldiers that wield electrified weapons will shock you for a chunk of health with each swing, and I’ve never cared enough about a Wii game to throw my controller until Skyward Sword.

Trying to roll bombs or aim projectiles is just as shoddy, while control over the camera is also very limited, preventing you from being able to easily and quickly look around, whether it’s for your next destination or a giant boss that’s standing right on top of you. This is a problem that Nintendo essentially invented with the old Super Mario 64, and many others have evolved and nearly perfected it since then, yet it remains to be a considerable flaw on any core game for the Wii. It’s very likely that Skyward Sword will be the Wii’s final major title from Nintendo (or at least the last one that anyone cares about), and for the controls to still be a notable point of frustration and inaccuracy proves once and for all that the console is only good for glorified tech demos and party games aimed at the most casual of non-gaming gamers.

The controls work, most the time. I'm not going to say the sword swipes are perfect, but they don't destroy the game or anything.

My main problem is the mapping rather than the motion controls. I miss having quick buttons for items like TP, and I think IR aiming was faster and easier to use than just M+

Really? The title was changed to show that review? Are the mods trying to bait people into getting banned or something? The title wasn't even changed when the Famitsu score was posted!!

why are you taking impressions from this specific review and ignoring all others?
Because from what I remember, the majority of the gaming press was jizzing all over Twilight Princess' motion controls, too. I've been burnt by buying into their hype before, so yes, I admittedly tend to glaze over gushing praise and place me attention on glaring criticism (when it comes to controls at least).

Honestly though, I dont understand how these reviews are varying so much. How does one call the game perfect for what it is, then another just give it a score just above average.

Really? The title was changed to show that review?

The 7.5 didn't get people riled up like they thought, so they're trying to go deeper. *shrugs*

Fake Edit: Oh, they tried to "balance" it out by including the bought-and-paid-for Famitsu score. At least try to do a legitimate publication score. There's plenty of 10s to choose from from there. :P

Edit:
Maybe use a shout-out to Gaming-Age and choose their 10/10, for example. :lol

Edit2:
Actually, metacritic got it wrong. Gaming-Age gave it an equivalent 95/100. Still a more appropriate counter-review than Famitsu, though. ;)

did you hear that guys

People who like Wii games are WRONG

ONCE AND FOR ALL

What annoys me about that is that it does it once per play session. Like, I can collect a feather for the first time, get the prompt telling me what it is and be ok with it then not see it for that item for the rest of the play session. They seem to think I'd forget what this collectable is and need to remind me every time I go back to the game.
They really need a way to turn it off (outside the very first ever pick up of an item).
I have not read much of this topic but is this really returning in SS? I hated that in TP.

A comment by the reviewer on TP's metacritic score

I actually looked that Metacritic score up while writing my review and was surprised to see it still ranked so high, but I guess all the writers at the time were still under the effects of the Wii Virus and Metacritic doesn't allow you to change your review scores. Ever.

Dude trust me, don't worry about this. The controls work perfectly. Not once have I slashed in a direction I didn't intend to.

Can't believe the amount of false information that's floating around about this game. I did call it a year ago though. Some people just won't give motion controls a try.

I feel like subscribing to a review score system that the majority of your audience don't understand, that requires extra-justification -- mathematically/logically sound or not -- is just counter-intuitive. It not only defeats the purpose of a simple numbered score, but it actively creates confusion. You're a slave to your audience, I suppose. Well, I mean, the number is, theoretically, only there for the audience anyway, so why make the one bit of a review that's not for you aggressively all about you?

actually i did it this way because i used to do the stupid old ign 100 point scale thing, so when i gave an 8.2 to super paper mario, i was doing it to place under other games i liked and above others i disliked.

this was easier for me to categorize.

10- once or twice every generation. mirror's edge, for example
9- goty games and maybe some lighter gotg contenders.
8- great games i would recommend to anyone, probably goty contenders
7- good games i would recommend to fans of the genre or series. usually some flaws that are easy to overlook or are overruled by other, far better stuff (like with spirit tracks)
6- games i enjoy that i would have trouble recommending to anyone not a fan of the series or genre. usually it might be something that enjoy despite its problems.
5- can't recommend, but can't really recommend not to buy either. a game's biggest problem here is that it might be just boring, not that the good or bad come to a dead heat.
4- games i didn't enjoy, but still thought had some redeeming features. sometimes it's probably something i dislike despite its high points. i wouldn't recommend against purchasing a game like this, but i might suggest someone proceed with caution
3- games i didn't enjoy, and thought had some serious problems far outweighing the good. sometimes it's one dumb thing that's used all the time, others it's just a mess of different things. there might still be a good game in there if it was handled in a different way.
2- a bad game through and through. haven't actually played too many of these, thankfully. a lot of those games james rolfe plays would probably fit here. i guess that batman forever gb game would be one (i actually owned and tried to play it too). and phantom hourglass, of course.
1- these are more common than 10s, but truly awful game shit is still hard to achieve. fortunately, i don't think i've played a single one of these. sonic the hedgehog 06 might fit the bill, same with stuff like superman 64.

Haha, pretty crazy. Either it's the greatest Zelda game, or it's a great game hamstrung by issues. Looks pretty divisive. I'm excited to get my hands on it- I wonder which camp I'll be in once I'm through...? Or for that matter, which camp GAF will be in...

Hah, some of that guy's comments are gold.

I could point to any number of bad games or the Twilight series to disprove that sales = quality, but my "horrid business decision" comment was actually regarding Nintendo holding back a completely finished game an entire year so that they could cram motion controls into it and push it out with their new console. All the while Gamecube owners are left empty-handed, waiting for quality first-party support that just never came until it was far too late, and far too little.

How is this even relevant in a Skyward Sword review!?

Opinions. Some people aren't as wild about Zelda games as others.

Same with motion controls, but that's also been typical of this entire generation. Some sites actually bother to learn how to use the controls and then review the game. Others just complain that the controls don't work and stop there. It's like someone complaining about a regular controller game saying that it's too hard to use the sticks and buttons at the same time.

i.e. The review reveals more about the reviewer than about the game they're reviewing.

Also the "TP being held back for a year to cram motion controls" thing is a weird urban legend.

The year TP was supposed to come out, it was table-upended by Miyamoto. In the process of totally redesigning the game, they decided to add Wii controls.

Aonuma's Twilight Princess would have come out the year before, but to say the TP we got was held back for a year because of it is flat-out lying. Miyamoto has even admitted they were working on the game until it had to go gold.

avatars are back yay!

And the fact that Anihawk likes TP and hates Metroid Prime nullifies every opinion he has about good games.

Still love your posts though! <3

EDIT: quick edits are awesome!!

i want to get aonuma's tp someday.

Lol the VB review is crazy. It starts with "Skyward Sword Proves Nintendo Hasn't Learned Anything" then ripps Nintendo's arrogance and PR. Its not so much a review as it is the reviewer taking the opportunity to get some stuff off his chest. Haven't read all of it though for fear of spoilers.
