Skyward Sword review thread [Newest Reviews - Cubed3 10/10, GC: A, AusGamers: 7/10]

You know, if you took away the big, empty, pointless field in Ocarina of Time and just connected the zones around its periphery with corridors, it wouldn't change the game flow one bit but would make it seem as if there was "no exploration".

Here's a thought though. Based on a few spoilers I've seen, impressions, and the like, I keep getting reminded of Link to the Past. Link to the Past didn't have a big, empty, open overworld map to wander around in and enter side branches for a sense of "exploration". It's overworld was essentially a giant maze - an evolution of Zelda 1's overworld in point of fact.

This stuff I'm hearing about SS makes it sound the most like LttP, in spirit at least.

Maybe not a coincidence since Miyamoto seems to want to remake LttP more than any other Zelda according to his recent interviews.

Not a full 3D remake but he does want to do a 3D classic with LttP with dual 2D layers. Hope that happens. That'd be awesome.

People are totally overlooking the many sidequests in Skyloft and the hidden Goddess Cubes and Heart Pieces.
Anyone gotten all Heart Pieces so far? No? I guessed it. There's enough exploration for me.

Those exist sure, but I would rather find hidden people to talk to, side quests off to the side beyond a pumpkin jobs and simple tasks like that, people to race with and interesting sites just to look at all over the map rather than just a few sections before a dungeon (though sitting down and staring at the giant tree is nice the forest).

To me a perfect Zelda game would have the open world to explore for visuals and hidden locals of Wind Waker with the amount of people of Majora's Mask and Link's Awakening. Not drastic important to making Link stronger or have more health, just to explore and encounter. That has always interested me far more than just collecting hearts and rupees. Don't misunderstand me anyone, I'm not talking about a GTA Zelda, just more of what past Zelda games gave us.

Skyward has exploration, just not the variety I want or the depth I crave. Though thinking about it, now I realise why I didn't fall in love with Darksiders. Good straight forward progression and movement, but nothing for me to do outside of that. Glad I figured that out.

I played the demo and didn't have any problems with the aiming.

I wonder how many who have problems with aiming forget to re-centre? Personal opinion aside for like and dislike of it of course.

Well, that worries me a bit, because those rankings correlate with mine pretty well. I want it to be God Tier.

By the way, though, "Awesome" is better than "Incredible".

Based on what, Tempest 2000?

Actually, "awesome" has only "some" awe.
Which is why I can see Incredible rated higher.
But nothing beats awful...

When Miyamoto said you wouldnt see the difference between dungeon and overworld, he wasn't joking.

I like it, but I just wish there were more open areas to explore. There seriously isn't any.
I don't get this complaint. If this game had open areas it would turn out just like Wind Waker or Twilight Princess where it's barren and empty

I really want to punch this lady in the face due to the repeating info. It's like you can feel her looming over the situation and ready to pounce. You know it's coming, and she does it like clockwork.

Nope, it'd be like ALTTP (it's linear, but not explicitly. You can explore, but see areas out of reach in the distance which you will access later - which is awesome).

In skyward sword, it's not like that. It's literally one linear path throughout.

Oh well. Looks like this is the end for Zelda games.

Zelda? This is the end of Nintendo as we know it!

-They should stop making hardware and focus on being a great 3rd-party software developer
-They should learn lessons from companies like Bethesda and make more mature games
-something something stock prices
-Apple was always going to beat them anyway
-they haven't had a new idea in years

Nintendo is collapsing, and Skyward Sword's reviews are a case in point.

Yeah, if you sit up right, making every motion in exaggerated ways, then sure it works.

Not everyone plays, or wants to play games like that.

Flicking the wrist does not work all the time.

That doesn't make it okay to complain that the controls are broken because they don't work the way you personally want them too. We've known the whole time that flicks wouldn't work and that you'd need to move more. That doesn't make the controls inaccurate.

Um....... that's a good thing. Play the game like it was suppose to be played.

There should always be an option.

Pretty simple to rework the motion controls into a standard controller.

This is probably the first game that i've played in a long while that doesn't even have an options menu.

Really? I thought about mapping stuff to the right stick, maybe good idea for a Dolphin hack, but I don't see how it would work any better. I mean, seems terribly uncomfortable to make quick movements with that. Plus some stuff like thrusting, raising your sword, the two spin attacks, the rotation of the bug net, etc. would have to be complicated with a variety of trigger holding. It's probably possible but I'm not sure it would be an improvement or that it would make the game's controls more accurate and comfortable. I mean, some of those motions are as "complex" as fighting game inputs, and there's a reason why an arcade stick is preferred above doing those motions with your thumb on the analog stick.

Still, I'd like to see someone try it for a hack.

I must admit, not being able to slouch in my bed hitting a button to swing a sword means I'm playing the game for 2-3 hours at a time, rather than the 6-7 I would like to.

The combat mechanics are good, but I'm not sure it's an improvement overall.

In pretty much the exact same way.

Either turn the volume down or turn it off completely.
Guess I will. Does anyone actually enjoy it?

Not an issue for me...I think it sounds perfectly fine when set to low volumes, and can add to a certain games like Mario Kart and of course, No More Heroes.

Eh, I appreciate what they're trying to say, but the same issues as Gamespot talked about were reported on the Weekened Confirmed, so I think your mileage may vary.
The people who have had problems with the controls were probably playing in areas with IR interference (from the sun, etc.), because that can throw the controls out of whack since the game uses a combination of MotionPlus and IR. Or they're just not doing it right, lol. Most reviews have claimed to experience little to no problems with the controls at all, so these few off reports must be doing something wrong.

Honestly, you have to be either a complete spastic or have a broken controller to find significant inaccuracy in the swordplay. That's based on three and a half hours play with significant time spent trying to 'break' the controls.

exactly, the reason miyamoto's first skyward sword e3 demo was so messed up was because the remote was using IR to calibrate the motion plus sensor. but with tons of stray IR, the calibration would get screwed up, giving us the impression that the controls didn't work well. I have a feeling this is what's giving some players problems with the controls.

I don't know who it was, I think it was Marcus, but he pretty much tell the Zelda Fanboys to shut the fuck up in the last Invisible Walls.

Though, when you just don't like motion controls... don't review a game that's based around them.

Zelda talk starts at 23:33.

They should just stop playing fantasy type lord of the rings (skyrim) and military brown fpses really, that will help them grasp other gaming genres...

You guys are full of shit. Unless you want to post pictures with the game that you have right now and if you have a pirated copy, take a picture of that as well with your name and address, I will come over and kick your ass. If you haven't played the game you're not qualified to fuckin comment on it, shut the fuck up.

That's pretty much what he said for the ones who don't want to listen to IW.

For those who like reading negative reviews, then here is the most negative review to date. VentureBeat - 65/100

Man, this shit is EPIC! :D

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword proves Nintendo hasn’t learned anything:
The more I played Skyward Sword the less I liked it. Like many Nintendo games or even consoles, there are some core features and gimmicks that can be entertaining under very specific circumstances, yet they’re utterly bogged down... until Nintendo learns some new tricks or, at the very least, can keep up with other modern day developers, I think I’ve finally, reluctantly, outgrown the Zelda series.
