Woah! Everyone started existing again.

avatars are back yay!

And the fact that Anihawk likes TP and hates Metroid Prime nullifies every opinion he has about good games.

Still love your posts though! <3

EDIT: quick edits are awesome!!

i don't hate metroid prime. i wouldn't even give a game i hate a 1.

actually i did it this way because i used to do the stupid old ign 100 point scale thing, so when i gave an 8.2 to super paper mario, i was doing it to place under other games i liked and above others i disliked.

this was easier for me to categorize.

10- once or twice every generation. mirror's edge, for example
9- goty games and maybe some lighter gotg contenders.
8- great games i would recommend to anyone, probably goty contenders
7- good games i would recommend to fans of the genre or series. usually some flaws that are easy to overlook or are overruled by other, far better stuff (like with spirit tracks)
6- games i enjoy that i would have trouble recommending to anyone not a fan of the series or genre. usually it might be something that enjoy despite its problems.
5- can't recommend, but can't really recommend not to buy either. a game's biggest problem here is that it might be just boring, not that the good or bad come to a dead heat.
4- games i didn't enjoy, but still thought had some redeeming features. sometimes it's probably something i dislike despite its high points. i wouldn't recommend against purchasing a game like this, but i might suggest someone proceed with caution
3- games i didn't enjoy, and thought had some serious problems far outweighing the good. sometimes it's one dumb thing that's used all the time, others it's just a mess of different things. there might still be a good game in there if it was handled in a different way.
2- a bad game through and through. haven't actually played too many of these, thankfully. a lot of those games james rolfe plays would probably fit here. i guess that batman forever gb game would be one (i actually owned and tried to play it too). and phantom hourglass, of course.
1- these are more common than 10s, but truly awful game shit is still hard to achieve. fortunately, i don't think i've played a single one of these. sonic the hedgehog 06 might fit the bill, same with stuff like superman 64.
jak ii - jak ii

I laughed.

Honestly though, I dont understand how these reviews are varying so much. How does one call the game perfect for what it is, then another just give it a score just above average.
not that hard to figure, honestly. theres always going to be a very "eager" group out there that declares the newest zelda release to be the best in the series. i know ive heard that almost in equal measure with MM, WW, TP, and now SS.

Just like there is always very eager group to shit on the newest Zelda. Every single one of those games could be considered the best in the series by different people.

Here's what I find interesting about the outliers to the SS review scores:

In this particular case, most of the 9-10 scores seem to be specifically citing that "this is the game the Wii was made for and it deserves recognition for that" and "this is the Zelda that finally introduces progressive features to update the Zelda experience, in addition to using motion controls the right way". From what I've seen, almost EVERY positive review has emphasized how this Zelda feels fresh in some way - be it world layout, storytelling, dialog style, characters, or whatever.

A few of the outlier opinions, either overtly or between the lines, say that it's just more of the same old Zelda and motion controls are broken and don't work.

So... when 50 people say "this Zelda has new things" and 2 guys say "meh, more of the same", I think the odds are, the 2 outliers don't just have different opinions on the same content everyone else experienced. But rather went into it determined to find something lacking and disregarded the impact of what the game does that is new, in favor of harping on traditional aspects that exist because without them, it wouldn't be Zelda anymore.

When 50 people say "these motion controls work at last", emphasizing they had to be convinced the motion controls work this time, and 2 say "same old trash, whatever", I think it's much more likely the outliers didn't give a crap, rolled their eyes, shrugged, and vaguely waved their arm around the room while looking away from the TV in disgust at the fact that they were being asked to play a mere Wii game.

Dude trust me, don't worry about this. The controls work perfectly. Not once have I slashed in a direction I didn't intend to.

Can't believe the amount of false information that's floating around about this game. I did call it a year ago though. Some people just won't give motion controls a try.
That's reassuring, and I'm glad the few that've played it on GAF seem okay with the controls. When it comes this aspect in particular, I generally prefer what GAF has to say over the "pros".

Whatever mod changed the thread title mentioning the Venturebeat review must be laughing out loud right now. There's the perfect shitstorm rigth there.

The reviewer is getting slammed in the comments section and he is even responding to some of them. It's been a fun read all together :)

I finally clicked the link to see what it was about, and yes he is even correcting someone's grammar.

Obviously most of that VentureBeat review is trollbait for an anti-Wii agenda, but some of it rang true. The motion controls do feel a bit iffy, nowhere near as fluid as Wii Sports Resort, the games clearly main inspiration.

Also:

"In what is easily the game’s largest offense, after completing all three temples, you’ll then be sent back to the same exact areas and dungeons not once, but twice."

I might have to stop playing the game right now if this is true.

that was sort of my point. but then, i was saying thats going to play a part in the "wild" variance of scores.

can it be he means that you come back later on in the game to get a hidden heart container part or something like that?

venturebeat said:
ere too ignorant to realize it. But I deleted all that, because this interview with Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime speaks for itself. In it, Fils-Aime claims that he believes there hasn’t been a game of the same caliber and score of Skyward Sword, based on what he counts are eight perfect ratings on Metacritic.

“I don’t know if there’s going to be a video game in history that’s going to be able to compare to Skyward Sword,” he (reggie) said.

I didn't get any father than this, because I read that interview and he used that quote totally out of context.

That pretty much tells me I don't need to worry about what he's saying if he won't even read/understand an article that he is quoting.

No, you do come back later on. But you immediately unlock a brand new area. You aren't running around in the same place repeatedly. With the exception of the first dungeon, which you do visit twice.

There were parts of Twilight Princess that you revisited as well.

That site gave MW3's single-player a 91.
Which is equal to what they gave Uncharted 3.
Which is higher than the 90 they gave to MW3's multiplayer.
Which is higher than Arkham City's 89.
Which is WAY higher than BF3's 69.

Yeah... I don't think we should care about this one guys.

I don't get the complaints about motion controls in Twilight Princess. They were easily one of my favorite parts of the game. Leaving that aside...

MY QUESTION: Can you still run and slice in Skyward Sword? I kinda, sorta loved running and slicing at grass as I was running, but I've got the impression from videos that Link now stops every time he makes a sword swing.

Motion Controls in TP were total shit, the sword specifically here. Added absolutely nothing to the game outside of clunk and was exactly the sort of deal that made the Wii look stupid instead of the type of fare Skyward is going for where the motion has a point.

Twilight Princess, outside of it's laggy intro (which I don't typically mind, slow intros) was such a good game though, great dungeons, so the game could have required me to wear a colander on my head and I'd have put up with it.

That's one way to interpret it, but I think it would've been a stronger case if we're talking about a random sampling here and not the gaming press specifically, who sorta have a tendency to over-inflate scores, go overboard with praise, and gloss over flaws.

I find the opposite is generally true with Wii games.

How can anyone call SS progressive? The extreme levels of hand-holding so far indicate that not only has it NOT progressed, but it has actually taken SEVERAL steps backwards.

The over abundance of "HEY LOOK YOU GOT RUPPEE" "HEY LOOK YOU GOT HEART" "HEY YOU SUCK AT THIS GAME GET SOME HEARTS" "HEY THERE'S A LOCKED DOOR GUESS WHAT YOU NEED TO GET A KEY TO UNLOCK IT" etc etc etc etc is just mind blowing. HOW did they not only re-implement this commonly complained about aspect but also manage to increase the frequency tenfold?

Dude Mirror's Edge's Time Trials are absolutely incredible.

what i love about them is that, yeah, they're incredibly incredible on their own, but then you try to speed run a campaign, and it's like a marathon of time trials. it turns the single player game from something great into something goddamn amazing.

Way to speak truth to power, man.

All of that sounds the same as every Zelda since OoT.

I take it you're not enjoying it, though?

TP had the same bull and people weren't complaining.

It's worse, man.

It's worse.

just wait until your batteries start running out.

I have not read much of this topic but is this really returning in SS? I hated that in TP.

It's actually worse in SS. Even if you have 20 of any type of widget, it will stop you in your tracks when you pick up another, do the dramatic music animation, throw a paragraph of text onscreen about what you just picked up, then it will open up your menu, and show you the animation of the thing being added, which you've picked up a million times before. I can't for the life of me understand the point of it all. Takes like 10 seconds, during which Im invariably button mashing to get it to go quicker.

I disliked the constant text in TP and I'm sure I'll dislike it here too but I don't think its ever been a major flaw. I would file it under the "minor issues" column.

Or maybe, just maybe they didn't like it as much.

This thread has made me realize that Sega has some of the best IPs in the industry yet is the absolute worst and developing any of them. Hell if they even outsourced a few, it would go miles and miles.

Just give Suda51 the Jet Set Radio franchise and awards will be showered upon faces.

this thread made you realize that?

not sega themselves?

I was trying to post in another thread and it seems it got posted in this one.

Anyway the scores seem fine for the game so I'll be picking this up sometime next year when I'm back in the states along with Xenoblade.

I'm always amused by the lone reviewers who try to "fix the system" of inflated game scores by doing the exact opposite.

Because taking it to the other extreme fixes everything.
