I am getting a Pirates 3 vibe from TDKR. Not in terms of quality, but in terms of expectations. Many people expected Pirates 3 to hit $160-175M after seeing Spider-man 3's first weekend. They figured that Pirates 2 broke the first Spider-Man movie's record so this naturally had to become the new record holder. Many a bitter tear when that movie made $140M including the Thursday 10pm showings.

I don't think it is a given that TDKR will massively improve on the opening of TDK.

Without 3D ticket prices and TA looking to smash the OW record TDKR will have a tough battle setting a new record. If any film can do it this year it's going to be TDKR.

I just returned from watching it. Mother of god, this a true masterpiece of summer blockbackerry!!!! And even better, I really enjoyed the 3D [passive glasses]!

Its a shame I wont be able to see it again in theaters.
/waits for bluray

I liked it, but my only gripe was that the "army" at the end was pretty much cannon fodder for the avengers and you never really felt that the good guys were in any real sort of danger.
Hawkeye wasn't even taking cover. Plus, you had a lot of silly action moments in that final battle that reminded me of the mindless action of transformers 2/3.
I dunno... maybe I'm jaded

Hawkeye does in fact take cover behind a car at one point. There was also that awesome moment where he runs out of arrows and pulls one from a corpse to escape.

Pirates 3 suffered from Matrix Revolutions syndrome (not talking quality wise) but the spacing between the release dates of the two movies. Besides that I dont remember Pirates 3 being marketed as the final chapter by Disney.

TDKR getting more than the TDK OW is more probable than TDK's final gross.

Nice try, Fox, but you can't cancel The Avengers!!!! Whedon4lyyyfe!

One of the best superhero films I've ever seen. Joss did it. I'm so happy for everyone involved.

Take a look at the calender before making such silly posts. And even ignoring the two weeks the box office spreads its legs to TDKR, Avengers still has a lot tougher competition.

Thats what I meant, the LOL was to iterate that TDKR has literally no competition compared to Avengers. Take this weekend off you need it lol. everything is not sarcasm on GAF

My audience had a delayed reaction to the
Point Break
line. It took a second to dawn on everybody what the connection was. I think everybody but me missed the
Galaga
line. I burst into laughter, but I was the only one in the whole theater.

What line is this?

Near the end of the movie
when Cap is giving out orders, he tells Hawkeye to take a spot on top of a nearby building and call out enemy positions, then tells Iron Man to give him a lift. Tony quips "clench up Legolas" as he grabs Hawkeye and blasts off.

The 3D is OK, but it's pretty obvious that the film wasn't shot with it in mind. I can think of only one shot that really takes advantage of it. There's not a lot of depth at any point though.

I see your point. And I specifically meant the fact that people seem to think TDKR is a lock for the OW record. If the Avengers opened at 150M, I probably would have agreed, since I do think that TDKR will increase over TDK's opening. However, the closer the Avengers gets to 200M, the less certain I am that TDKR is a lock to surpass it. Both films have IMAX business helping out, but the Avengers will be getting an extra $3 surcharge on at least half of the tickets sold this weekend. That is a lot of extra tickets for TDKR to sell to make up that difference.

When I saw it, most people missed the
Galaga line, but they exploded into laughter later when the guy just went right back to playing the game.

If you haven't seen it yet, you HAVE to watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgYhLIThTvk

It's a bit long, but it's worth every second. It says a lot about John Peters. :)

The amazing thing about that video nowadays is that we have The Avengers today. Nowadays, it's actually possible to make a movie where everyone involved in the process fucking loves comic books- I'm sure the process of how The Avengers got made is the exact opposite of why Kevin Smith/Tim Burton's Superman movie got shitcanned.

Oh, my bad. Seemed like you were saying the complete opposite and I was thinking ".....what?"

Big.Giant.Spider.

Agreed.

One big problem with TDKR is that Bane is trying to cause chaos in Arkham just like The Joker did, but Bane is a far less compelling villain. He doesn't look as scary, his lines aren't as memorable and you don't really see his face.

Bane is creating chaos for a purpose of finishing the job from BB. Joker is someone who was doing it for fun and got easily caught...twice. Bane destroys Batman and Gotham when they try to capture him. That is the difference.

Funny, I can't tell any of that from the trailers.

We really did dodge a bullet with the Tim Burton batman, and if Kevin Smiths story is right, he wasn't the issue when he was on the project.

While he'd make a horrible director for it, I'd love to see Kevin Smith get a few comic scripts that allowed him to do whatever.

Thanks for what I presume are spoilers, bro.

:/

Oh yeah, I'm sure a Kevin Smith comic film would work great nowadays- just as I'm sure a Joss Whedon comic film back then would have gone through similar fuck-ups.

Just so long as it doesn't involve the lead hero peeing himself.

I've seen similar things said by others in TDKR's thread, unspoilered :(

So either its a) people being dicks and spoiling shit, or b) a lot of people sharing the same opinion of what the movie will be.....

Sounds like Knightfall from the comic books. Maybe that is what they are all basing this on.

I've been trying to avoid that thread these days myself. I pop in sometimes and scroll through a few posts before I step out. Is it really bad?

Well, I am completely spoiler-free, so it's hard to tell, but I've seen an awful lot of posts recently that appear to be spoilers-under-the-guise-of-being-opinions. But obviously I could be wrong.

I don't get all the complaints about "they didn't seem like they were in danger".

Um, it's the first in a series of super hero team ups. They aren't going to kill the super heroes. That shouldn't be held against the movie. The heroes in every movie almost never die unless they don't intend to make any more movies.

Besides, Thor and Hulk are supposed to be basically invincible.

It looks like half-opinion, half-misinterpretation to me :lol

I thought the TDKR threads had spoilers flying all over the place. It's the reason why I bailed out on the first one after being a regular poster.

It's too hard to tell with that kind of stuff, as someone HAS come in and spoiled almost EVERY big event release like this in my 7 years on GAF. Usually without warning or provocation. It's just like "hey dudes, Rachel dies!"

:_(

Speaking of spoilers, can someone spoil what makes
Thanos (sp?)
so hypeworthy for Avengers 2? It's not like they will rip the plot for A2 directly from the comic, so I'm not worried about "spoilers" as such. Just want to know why I should be excited.

Sure.

In the comics there was a huge event in the early 90s called Infinity Gauntlet. It was a major crossover across all the Marvel comics, and it was about how Thanos, a space titan, basically gets his hands on the most powerful thing in the galaxy and he proceeds to fuck up every single person who tries to stop him. Cosmic proportions.

How is he defeated?

Cosmic level, nigh invulnerable baddie
