No problem :)
If you have larger hands, the XL will be perfect for you. I've got pretty small hands, so the 3DS fits me better.

Eusis, can you please give me an example or a video where crosstalk is explained? I never heard of it. Also, I'm going to sleep now, so I'll answer tomorrow on other questions.

Does it still feel uncomfortable playing games with the Dpad? Playing VC games back when I was renting an Ambassador 3DS felt terrible, is the position different enough now to make any difference?

Cross talk is basically when you see a faint double of the image meant for the other eye, IE you might see light image of the log passages when looking straight at them. I suspect it's from very bright images contrasting with a dark background and thus shining past the filter enough for the eyes to notice, as it's really bad in VVVVVV due to the background at several portions literally being white stars shooting across a black void. I was thinking of this when ghosting was brought up before, so I want to be sure whether it is worse or if they actually minimized it some.

So I guess Amazon US is not going to stock this at all (unless they carry it after launch), just like the 3DS. Shame really as I prefer to buy consoles from them.

Taxation starts for California in September too...

Ah well, there'll probably be some local deals anyway, like $10 off NSMB2 or whatever.

The problem with the 3DS’s 3D screen has always been keeping your head and the 3DS in the right position in relation to each other. Shift either by half an inch, and you found yourself in the land of double vision. The 3DS XL doesn’t alleviate this problem entirely, but there’s a little more margin for error
It's funny that some people are expecting improved viewing angle because it's physically impossible. The screen needs to deliver a separate image to each eye, so the only viewing angle this technology will ever offer is the one produced by the distance between your eye and nose--once one screen is pointed past the nose in either direction it will transition to the other view. Those are the limitations, it's either that or glasses. Well, maybe there will some kind of eye tracking technology that adjusts the screen to your head movement but that is likely far from being affordable.

I wonder if the XL's lower screen smudges the upper screen when closed... like the original 3DS would? I'd notice a faint box outline appearing on my screen protector every time I opened the device, it was super annoying.

The XL has little bumps that raises the top part somewhat when closed. It shouldn't be touching the bottom at all.

I'd still get a screen protector (Hori?) to be safe though. At worst then we're wrong only for a screen protector to take the blow so we can replace it and mod as necessary.

It seems like that's been fixed sinced the top screen has small bumps that would presumably rest on the start/select buttons to prevent the bezel from touching the screen.

Ah, beaten.

They are always such a bitch to put on. Maybe its my humid ass area, but always fighting to put them on. Air bubbles that never go away, etc.

Though one of the first games I'm getting is theatrythm final fantasy, and that is a pretty heavy touch game. I'm still on the fence on getting a protector. I'd like to think I wouldn't hit the screen so hard to scratch it.

I wouldn't have noticed it if I didn't put them together. I don't have two copies of one specific game, but I'll try to compare it this sunday because I'm going to someone with a 3DS. (it will be probably two copies of Kid Icarus or MK7 which I can compare)

In terms of filming the 3DS XL running games, I sadly can't do that for you. (NDA's and stuff)
But I'll be checking it out and I'm going to contact Nintendo to hear about that 'yellow' screen. :)

And I guess the viewing angle of the 3D is also a bit subjective. For me, I noticed no difference at all when the effect is at it fullest. However, it seems that I have a bigger margin at a lower 3D intensivity. I need some more time to be sure.

edit: It seems I am allowed to take pictures, so here you go:

Thanks for that picture. I think i'll be getting a silver version. I would like to see the red one before launch, however.

Also hoping screen protectors for the XL release before launch day.

Position is the same, so it will still give you cramp. (it always did for me) It's just that the pad has a better feeling and build quality. If you take a look at the picture, you can see that the Dpad position is a bit different, but the distance between the Dpad and Circle Pad stays the same.

As for that yellow like screen, in Mario Kart 7 I've noticed it's much more white when it's loading.

I still need to take a better look at the 3D, but I'm too tired to see it clearly. I see a lot of things double when I'm tired, so I hope it will be better in a few hours :)

So would you say the screen is darker on the XL than the current 3DS? Have seen this said.

I'm going to buy just one of either 3DS XL or Vita. Which one has the better software collection if you include backwards compatibility? I didn't own PSP or DS.

I'm not a huge fan of either companies first party IPs so I'll be mostly buying third party games like jRPGs and smaller unique indie-ish titles.

The combined 3DS/DS library is vastly superior to the Vita and it's selection of PSP titles. There are probably more JRPGs on the PSP, but a better overall library on the DS.

why are you asking this in a 3ds thread?

Yeah, I noticed the screen was a little warmer in other comparison photos.

It's weird how LCDs seem to be settling on warmer colour temperatures going forward.

I wish they would just stick with 6500k.

Among those two, however, I think I prefer the "yellow". It's clearly too warm, but it seems like the other one is colder than 6500k. So I'll take too warm over too cold.

Yeah it just really annoys me, as I hate buying consoles from gamestop (who like storing things in the bathroom) and Best Buy and all the other big box stores have terrible return policies when it comes to defects (like stuck pixels), Amazon is a simple click and you have 30 days.

Overall I would pick Vita if backwards compatibility is a big deal for you. While not every PSP game is up for download there are tons of JRPGs that are up and they are extremely cheap (most are $15) to date no full DS games are up for download. Also PSP games look fantastic on Vita's OLED while DS games on 3DS look pretty horrible (imo) as they are either too small or blurry from being stretched (it remains to be seen if the XL fixes this). Though the 3DS does have some great digital titles like Mutant Muds and Mighty Switch Force.

Also while there is no denying DS has a bigger more diverse lineup, finding the best games for it is not so easy anymore. Especially the JRPG's, which always get price gouged once they go out of print. Also Nintendo still not committing to GBA VC for everyone, so your looking at a very limited GB/GBC/NES catalog, then factor in Vita is getting PSone compatibility sometime this summer and then add in all those JRPGs. Well thats my .02 back on topic

Aside from the 3DS, the screen is just bigger. I always play games with lights set to power save mode and setting 3. I've just put them next to each other and noticed something strange. The image of the XL is much more 'yellow'-like than my 3DS. I've read something about some 3DS'es that have the same problem, but I can see the difference clearly now. I actually like the light from my 3DS more. In terms of intensity, it looks the same as the 3DS. Maybe there are some other people who noticed that too, I don't know.
So the 3DS XL looks like the right one and my 3DS like the left one.

Thanks for putting these up Phazon. Also thanks for commenting about the screens as I have been googleing for days to find out if the XL suffers from this. it takes some of the surprise (let down) out of opening the system only to discover this my self. I hate this honestly, Nintendo has been doing this since the later model DS lite units. Its really stupid too as it usually only effects one screen and then you end up with two LCD's with different temps, My Zelda 3DS is like this.

When it comes to how the BC works the Vita beats it out performance wise, more often than not PSP games simply look better on it, whereas the 3DS either leaves you with either a small 1:1 image (to be fixed with 3DS XL, though it's still ignoring much of the screen) or large, blurry screens. However, the selection you can play on Vita is somewhat lacking, made worse with how terrible SCEA is being at updating compatible games, whereas the 3DS simply works with all DS games or at least nearly all DS games. For that reason I'd stick with the 3DS XL, both systems have lots of great games but if a DS game interests you it's just a matter of finding it, not hoping it's on the PSN store, supported by Vita, and isn't pulled or will be pulled in the near future.

Although the last point is why it's a pretty good idea to buy anything you're interested in that may be pulled via PS3 or Media Go. To an extent also something you may want to do with games that are on sale, Riviera and Yggdra Union are unlikely to go below $5 ever.

Thanks for the info, that confirms my worries. Someone was trying to say that the extra room beneath the dpad would make things more comfortable, I wasn't sure whether that would help and seems like it doesn't. XL has a bunch of other benefits so I'll still get one, but it's disappointing that the ergonomic issues weren't addressed.

I'm hoping other impressions come out stating it is, and the fact your hand can rest against SOMETHING may help there, but I wasn't too optimistic there. It probably requires either switching with the circle pad or a complete ergonomics overhauls. Or, potentially and somewhat paradoxically, to copy the Wii U and move the buttons down to be level, and maybe fit the right nub up there. Then your thumbs are kept equal and it becomes more a matter of the awkward stretches to L/R, which isn't a guaranteed problem for all people anyway.

EDIT: and as a quick test holding the 3DS as if the face buttons are down there IS preferable.

Tried it.

_Like the design and finition of it, better than the 3ds but that's just matter of taste i guess
_Huge screen make things more impressive and it's a real plus for some games.

_I didn't noticed any progress in 3d viewing angle. I even had some difficulty to keep the 3D in Castlevania, but don't forget it's an expo and you can't manipulate the console exactly how you would like.

_The ppi is pretty bad, and people saying "oh i didn't even noticed it" have pretty bad eyes. It basically look like a nds where you clearly see a grid of pixel. For games with small things, like the new mario bros 2, it's pretty weird. Mario looks like he's a mosaic lol. Now it's not ugly but it's clearly different than the original console.

I couldn't compare if the console had a better 3d as i played only new games.

I wonder if this is what people are really thinking of with a "filter effect", that they actually forgot what it looks like to be able to see the lines separating pixels in this post-Retina Display world. And to be honest, that actually DOES help a lot, the Vita running PSP games without a filter can appear way more pixalated than on a PSP, despite the PSP screen not being THAT much smaller and not using a filter of any sort. Pretty much the same as saying composite (or playing on an SDTV period really) gives HD/some Wii games free AA.

Yeah I hope more impressions come out as well. I only had the 3DS for a month but playing Ambassador games was really unpleasant, I really thought fixing the ergonomic issues would be a no-brainer for the next model.

I'm going to have to try before I buy.

I, myself, find scanlines preferable to pixel-doubling...but it's hard to say why.

Can anyone confirm whether AR cards are supplied in the box like with the original model? Thanks.
I'm 95% sure I saw them in an unboxing video.

I'm really not sure anymore.....

At first I felt like "HELL NO"
Then after the initial impressions I was like "HELL YES!"
And now I'm like "IDK"

I'm interested in the screen size, but the PPI really might be a problem for me. I don't know where I'll be able to try one out at though. I'm definitely interested in seeing how Revelations and KI:U look.

I am simply going to wait. Sounds like a good up/sidegrade still but not enough to rush it for me. if they do white model in the US or a deal down the line that is when ill bite.

This really brings me down of of my hype cloud. I don't understand how most others say everything looks as good if not better and then one major player says the pixels are extremely more noticeable.

Maybe some don't care about bigger pixels? I sure don't mind the trade off. Ghosting is a bit more worrisome.

Already preordered at Gamestop, but won't go trade-in because I can make more money selling my old 3DS on Ebay. Games on this thing looks too sexy, expecially Mario Kart

Speaking of which -- what is the best way to sell one's 3DS in terms of digital content? I get so confused about Nintendo systems because I can't tell if you can transfer digital content or not. I am an ambassador, so maybe I should just download all the games, un-link it from my account, and list in the posting that all the games are on the device?

^I'm not sure if you can unlink the games from your account. If I had to guess i'd say no. Good question tho, I'm interested as well

As I understand it:

Purchases are tied to the system, not the account. If you want to migrate your purchases (including Ambassador status) from one device to another, you have to have them both connected to the same network and initiate a system transfer. This is relatively painless, but some have reported losing all of their save data in the process.

You can link your system to your Club Nintendo account. If you do so, new purchases are automatically registered for coins in Club Nintendo. This account does not "store" your purchases, as backwards as that sounds. Nintendo will probably migrate to this system after the Wii U has launched, or roll it all into something new...if you're willing to wait that long. Un-linking your account simply disables Club Nintendo registration.

...so here are your options:

a.) You sell the system now, with all of your digital games still tied to that system. Make sure you specify in the listing what games are included, and remove any personal information. (Photos, Credit Card, Club Nintendo, etc.)

b.) You buy a 3DS XL, transfer all of your purchases and saves from the old system to the new one, then sell the old system. (Which is now clean.)

I really want to play Theatrhythm so much so its convinced me to by a 3DS, but I am still undecided whether to get the standard one or XL :/ Hopefully more hands on videos will turn up soon.

My guess is they expect the XL to sell to an older audience like the DSiXL did, so they are going for more muted colours.

sell to an older audience so in the US only red and blue are available? huh?

If that europe black/grey came to the US I'd think about day 1ing the son of gun

If the 3DS XL's looked like the DSi XL's I'd have already pre-ordered one! I was in love with the bronze XL. Primary blue and primary red are not muted! At least the real thing has some nice tint to the color compared to the original image of horror, but I do like how my original 3DS looks so I'll be stickin' with it for now.

The only major upgrade for me sounds like the battery life and I have to be honest, from it not having a cradle I'll be too fucking lazy to plug it in to make up for that anyway. :lol

Any preorder deals floating around out there?

Reallllyyyy doubt it.

Uggh. Hype deflated. Guess I'm just going to keep my OG 3DS and not waste my money on the XL if the resolution is the same.

Im feeling the same way. Honestly, I'll probably stick with my OG 3DS and only upgrade if a legit "lite" redesign comes out. I was looking forward to that red xl though.... :(

Even if they make a Super 3DS with four analogs and a fleshlight, they will never uprez it. I guarantee you this with the bulletproof trust of a god. Why? Because THAT IS HOW NINTENDO WORKS AND ALWAYS WILL

I really want one right now, the most dissapointing thing and only real complaint about my original 3ds is the small top screen , the black bezel border looks ridiculous in this day and age.

Oh yes my other complaint is battery life on 3ds , well below Nintendo handheld standards , glad xl is a step up.

Day 1 , I'm still trying to find where I could import a UK model to NZ.

That's discouraging. I was playing MK7 today and was daydreaming what it would be like if the 3DS were the same resolution as my Vita. I woke up with sticky pants.
