If people watch it before there's less chance their going to watch it again and thus less money from advertisers because of the smaller audience.
Yeah, I realize that, and that's why they're horrible. I remember in the last Olympics they regularly cut off to commercials in the opening ceremony. No doubt they're doing the same again tomorrow. All about money.

BBC on the other hand will be providing a continuous feed for the UK. Sigh.

Isn't the BBC also largely funded by the people?

So judging by the last few posts this is sounding like a no, buuuuut, guessing there's nowhere online that I can watch the opening on a live stream that's official and/or high quality from the US?

So how many here is actually going to watch the ceremony tonight? I always skip it since it's so boring. Anything cool/funny gets captured/giffed pretty quick by the net anyway.

I doubt I'll watch the opening ceremony tonight. Will almost certainly cringe through-out as I'm British and I can't see it going well. At best I'd be embarrassed by the whole thing. I might be wrong but I have no intention on finding out! Plus I have to be up at 04:30am Saturday morning!

Looking forward to this, I live in England and hope we can really put on a show.

I was by The Etihad Stadium (Manchester) yesterday and I saw these signs:

media

And it dawned on me it's here!!

Who's got the next Olympics?, wondering who'll be at the closing ceremony.

Are you sure Archery is on now. Gone on BBC television and can't see anything

Edit: checked website and yeah, started at 9am. DAMN! Just gone through all 24 BBC Olympic channels on Sky and nope, not showing it.

Anyone watch Belarus vs New Zealand last night? lol

I was there. It was a decent enough game. Surprised that there were 15,000 people there on a hot, dry night in Coventry.

Next Olympics is in Russia, actually, so we'll probably get a big old megabucks opening ceremony.

And of course I'll be watching tonight. More than the visual spectacle there's the political aside of how a country represents its past and present and everything.

Sir Roger Bannister is the favourite to light the Olympic flame ahead of Sir Steve Redgrave and Daley Thompson.

I'd be happy with all three, but I'm leaning towards Daley. To dominate the decathlon for so long was a superhuman feat. Truly one of the greatest athletes ever.

Really, I think being the first to run the mile in under 4 minutes is more of a historical event, so I'd lean towards Bannister. Though of course, all of them are amazing athletes.

I watched the football last night and was amazed at how good their video player has got. I joined the game about 30 minutes in and the score was 1-0, not only could I rewind the live video to see the goal, but they had already bookmarked it so a single click would take me there. Another click to turn the stream live again.

This is going to be very useful for the F1. No more missing the start and waiting 4hrs for it be uploaded to iPlayer.

They aren't broadcasting the Archery today as it may detract attention from the Opening Ceremony, or something. It is the only day of an event that isn't being broadcast live throught the whole Olympics.

My prediction:

I think the torch will come in to the stadium carried by Beckham. At the end of the ceremony four people will do each 100m of a full lap my bets being on:

Daley Thompson
Tanni Grey-Thompson
Kelly Holmes
Sir Steve Redgrave

Before they give it to Bannister (the best choice in my opinion) to light the cauldron however that may be.

It is still scarcely believable that a media corporation like NBC still has the exclusive American broadcasting rights for both summer and winter Olympics up to 2020.

This fact must truly beggar the imagination

Who watches the winter Olympics anyway? :-p

The speed skating and figure skating events are insane. I don't think there's any other sport in the wider Olympics that is more CHAOTIC than short track speed skating.

Edit: I see SpectreFire has similar taste in Canadian flags.

Speaking of the opening ceremony. 1.2 billion people are expected to tune in to watch either live or delayed coverage. It could well end up as the most watched television broadcast of all time.

The current record holder is the 2008 opening ceremony.

That's pretty crazy, the archery stops way before the Ceremony starts.

Has anyone downloaded the London Results app? It looks like the Calendar tab has all the events one day ahead of their scheduled time.

Poor, brave Americans.

I thought it was just because it wasn't actually a competition event, it's essentially a draw? Or have I fundamentally misunderstood sport (cos I'm no good at it)

Has any enterprising cyber groups managed to create a viable proxy British servers for those unfortunate citizens stuck in second world countries who do not have the "luxury" of watching live streams online?

i shoved my head out the window, didnt hear squat, but im not really near any churches that ring their bells

My closest is about a mile and a half away from me, I heard. It was very annoying; don't they know people are on their summer holidays?!

Excited to see the opening tonight, hopefully I'll be able to stay awake for it since the damn bells woke me up early.

I swell with patriotic mucus at the mention of two things: the NHS and the BBC.
